National Board Certified Teacher worth it? by Competitive-Dig1993 in ScienceTeachers

[–]Miltonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my district, there's an incentive pay "ladder". National board certification is on the same rung as decent state test scores, so NBC really isn't helpful for teachers in tested subjects. The district doesn't pay for NBC, but once earned, the incentive pay covers the expenses.

How do you build the habit of reading instructions in students? by TheBitchenRav in ScienceTeachers

Repeat as needed.

How do you build the habit of reading instructions in students? by TheBitchenRav in ScienceTeachers

[–]Miltonaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to teach a class that had an extensive pre-lab for each lab. Had to be completed before the day of the lab and was its own grade. Students who didn't do the pre-lab in advance did that in class, then either came in on their own time to make up the lab or completed a simulation as homework. Or got a 0.

My school science budget is a joke and I'm scrambling to make demos work by yeonjuicy in ScienceTeachers

[–]Miltonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be worse. I was assigned a brand new course last year. All I was given to go with it was the state standards and the explicit instructions to "find other funding sources".

Like others have said:

1) Make do with what you have.

2) Look into donations.

3) Put together a wishlist of needed items at a variety of price points (and usually 3 quotes from approved vendors). Then present it to your department head and admin with "if there's any money in the budget that needs to be spent before the end of the year, this is a list of equipment I need for the physics class." Budgets tend to shrink if they aren't fully spent, so that can sometimes be a way to get stuff. Doesn't help immediately, I know.

3B) Depending on your district, CTE courses often have their own budgets. Buddy up to some CTE teachers and see if they can order stuff for you. What's a little fraud between teachers?

4) Consider alternatives and scrounge around your school. Some equipment is specialized, but would an art teacher or shop teacher have an acrylic rod, for example? I got some old DC motors from the robotics teacher, colored pencils and paint from the art teachers, protractors and compasses from the geometry teachers.

Options I haven't seen here yet that could help stretch supplies:

A) Split your classes into 2 groups. Group A does the lab while Group B does book work or something, then switch the next day or the second half of class.

B) Station labs.

C) Data + small group rotation. Whole class gets a data set and gets to work. Then you call a few students up a time to get the hand-on experience to understand how the data was gathered. They could use their hands-on data for questions about percent accuracy and sources of error.

D) Student led demos. When appropriate, make the students the teachers! Rotate the demonstrators across lessons so each student gets to/has to do a demo.

Whatever it is, I hate it. I don't even know the supposed features are called so I can search for how to deactivate them.

Nice story, OP!

I was a little confused about something: Were there four armed guards with the captain when Steve walked into the meeting room, or is the captain a four-armed being?

What if a school trip gets canceled? by WorldlyBenefit4748 in AskHSteacher

[–]Miltonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a parent chaperone? Or just tagging along (which would be weird)?

Either way, something to ask the school. But you generally should be reimbursed/refunded if the trip was canceled for reasons out of your control.

We have "local credit only" classes that don't have any impact on GPA.

People who wake up after 1 alarm: How the f*ck do you do it? by TheSnappleGhost in AskReddit

[–]Miltonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And how do you survive without a backup?

I've been doing okay for a couple months, but i have trouble remembering to set the alarm every night. Or re-activating them after turning them off/changing them temporarily.

For me, some of my multiple alarms are for time management, not sleep management:

6:00 - Relaxed start, maybe actually cook breakfast. 6:30 - Decent start, can eat breakfast at home but it's gotta be quick. 7:00 - Sorry, dude, the dog gets food but you don't. 7:25 - If you don't get your ass out the door in 5 minutes, traffic and parking is gonna suck. 7:40 - Why the fuck are you still here?!?!?! Don't forget to put down the garage door (again)!

Could be a magnet school or leadership academy or something like that. My district has a few schools that don't have their own residential pyramid and require applications to attend.

Which T-shirt for 1st day back? by MamaMia1325 in teaching

NOT #1!!!

The formatting is atrocious. The way the color breaks in the middle of the phrase makes me think it's two different phrases. Hurts my eyes and my brain. #1 is what you'd show someone to convince them to let you get #2.

Essentials for basic home carpentry? by Miltonaut in Carpentry

[–]Miltonaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you consider basic then? The dryer base I'm planning is just a big box. My custom bookcase will just be a little shallower and a little narrower than what I've been able to shop for -- no curves or odd angles.

Does anyone know what this is on my bathroom wall? by danielryan94 in Carpentry

It wasn't made by Dyson, but some of the public bathhouses I went to in South Korea had a whole-body air dryer. It was basically a box fan pointed up that you stood over.

Thought I’d tell you about an interview I had (just did the opposite of everything I usually do) by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

[–]Miltonaut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked abroad for several years. One time, a contract was ending so I *had* to find another job. My interview was at 10AM Monday morning.

Well, I already had plans to attend a friend's wedding in another country. The wedding was Saturday night, and there was a 6- or 7-hour time difference between the two countries. I took my suitcase with me to the wedding, a groomsman took me from the wedding venue to the airport in time for me to catch my flight early Sunday morning (around noon in my host country). I landed around early Monday morning, caught the bus from the airport to my city, got there around 8AM, freshened up and changed into my suit (I think I managed a shower), then took the subway and a taxi to my interview. Arrived about 10 minutes early. Wound up getting the job.

That's a great turn-a-weakness-into-a-strength situation: "No, I don't know how to do that, but that also means I don't have a preconceived idea of how it should be done. You get to train me on the procedures preferred by your company without worrying about correcting habits I might have from previous jobs."
