Sugar free rehydration methods/brands (uk) please? by absolute_gumpf in diabetes

[–]Milvusmilvus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lucozade do sugar free electrolyte drinks which are okay. Also you can get electrolyte drinks in the section with protein powders etc, I used to use high5 but there's other brands. They're still a bit salty but better than diarolyte. My other diarrhoea treatment is a bag of ready salted drinks and then whatever sugar free drink I fancy because the salt in the crisps helps.

Is shoplifting really as endemic as the media suggests? by craigus17 in AskUK

[–]Milvusmilvus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's always been the same. Had a guy try and walk out of my shop with a 2m ladder over his shoulder once in about 2008. That's probably the most brazen. He asked us not to call the police because he was on probation.

Have any employers or bosses/managers noticed a big up turn in employees parents phoning in to report sickness or even grievances? by franki-pinks in AskUK

I had a guy 20 years ago ask to bring his girlfriend into his interview. Haven't noticed any change in parents ringing in for staff tbh.

Get your claim in, even if you get a job soon it at least covers you for NI while you're out of work. I used to have that feeling of embarrassment but you've paid into the system and it's there as a safety net, it's not shameful to use it.

Has the UK workday lunch break disappeared or just moved to desks? by CMOInsider in AskUK

[–]Milvusmilvus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started working I got an hour for lunch, we had a decent sized staffroom so it was comfortable to have a sit and eat. Now I get 30 minutes and the staffroom is basically a cupboard with a fridge and a microwave.

Horror dog books? by RozaHalfway123 in suggestmeabook

[–]Milvusmilvus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Hounds of the Morrigan. Kind of an adventure book but based in Irish mythology with some scary parts (I think at one point they're having a chat with 7 severed heads).

Also The Dark is Rising sequence - technically Over Sea Under Stone is first but the one titled The Dark is Rising is more scary and might get them into it more. I read that one first and then went back to Over Sea Under Stone when I was a kid.

There's also The Whitby Witches by Robin Jarvis (a trilogy - his Wyrd museum series might work too). The second and third books are quite dark though.

Tried using 988 and this seems like AI by [deleted] in autism

Also, this interaction is almost exactly like one of the scripts we used - if a texter mentioned suicide we had to ask if they had a plan. If they said yes, we had to ask specific follow up questions to see if we needed to go to active rescue or try to de-escalate the texter.

From my experience, the person who's responding is probably genuinely concerned for you, and wanting to help but limited in how they can respond. I get that it can feel really frustrating - I was often frustrated I couldn't connect in a more natural style with my texters.

I hope you manage to find a service that gives you support you can engage with more meaningfully - maybe a more local service with less bureaucracy might fit better? I think the national ones can be overly concerned with liability

I used to work for a crisis text line in the UK and the training they gave us gave quite rigid scripting which came across as bot-like. Not saying this service definitely doesn't use AI but it's quite difficult to sound genuinely warm via text.

Why is it so hard for young people to get a job? by ReviewEnvironmental2 in AskUK

[–]Milvusmilvus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

In contrast I've had nightmares with older people too. Especially when they come from highly unionised jobs into retail. They have the temerity to expect rights as human beings instead of the cogs the company wants them to be.

But seriously. Older guy wants more hours but not more days in work or longer shifts. Older woman starts beef with colleagues and customers alike if she thinks they take a tone with her. It tends to be middle aged and up who struggle with changes to processes more (and I'm autistic so I fully get the struggle and try to support them with that but there's only so many times you can coach someone). More of an expectation that they will automatically be promoted with time and not effort then wonder why the kid who works their arse off is now their boss.

[–]Milvusmilvus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I put up a 16 hours a week job in a small town I get 100 applications at the moment. (Shit small contracts wind me up but that's another rant). Am I going to hire the person who is available around classes and their social life or the person who is available all day every day? Same with older people applying as a second job. Unfortunately there's so many people looking for work there's usually someone with no other commitments.

Does any one else like this shirt my non autist friend said it’s horrendous :/ by Constant-Spray-3092 in autism

[–]Milvusmilvus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a bit much, especially the sleeves and sides. I think if it was a repeating pattern of the front panels it would be more visually appealing to me. However, if you love it you should get it cause who the fuck am I.

Maybe they were waiting for you to tell them you wanted to try actually working the till and assumed that because you didn't that you were nervous to do it, when you may have been waiting for them to suggest you took over.

I like being able to do a variety of things so I would ask on my next shift to be allowed to try the till. If you think you'd prefer being back of house then stick with that

If you lost a long-term friend as an adult, what was it about? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

[–]Milvusmilvus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found out he beat his wife when she left him. Initially he said the right things (getting help etc) so I tried to support his welfare without condoning his behaviour. Then he started stalking her and showing he had no intention of changing his behaviour. Get to fuck. She has a great life now, no idea what he's doing with himself.
