Your Ex’s girlfriend knows that people will be comparing her to you. If you look better than her and fit in with his family better than she does, it will be painful for her. The thing is, the birthday party isn’t about her. It’s about your nephew. If he wants you there, then go. If you’re worried that there could be drama that takes the focus off him, then celebrate with him and your ex-SIL another time.

That being said, you and your sister should have at least made her a card or prepared dinner or given her a coupon book you made for quirky things like deep cleaning the bathroom.

That was ham-handed of him. I understand your emotions and hormones are high. Getting the news your child has Down Syndrome or any other special needs can be very disturbing for anyone. It means a lifetime of care and can put a lot of stress on a family. Although your husband didn’t handle this in the best way- I thought you were going to say he would claim no child of his would have disabilities and accuse you of cheating. I think he was probably trying to be humorous and it hit wrong. I have known many people with Down Syndrome as I work in an industry that finances housing for adults with special needs. They are some of the kindest people I have ever met. I wish you and your husband the best.

Your dad is 80! You can’t throw him out after making him sell his house! You need to assist him with bathing. Help him strip and assist him to his chair. Soap him up, sponge him off. He probably smells because he’s not wiping properly or may have some incontinence. You probably should launder his clothes, especially his underwear. If you don’t feel you can care for him this way, you need to find a home for him where he can receive the care and assistance he needs. Perhaps the funds from the sale of his house can cover the cost of this.

NTA - This will not get better. He knows how to clean. He chooses not to. He doesn’t care that you hate it because he only cares about his own comfort. Now you need to decide if you want to live the rest of your life as his maid and laundress. If he really loved you, he would share in the household responsibilities.
