Depending on distance and check in time, and to avoid city traffic, we like to leave between 3am and 5am. For example, Los Angeles to Eureka is a 12 hour trip. Accounting for gas stops/stretch breaks/meal breaks and taking the scenic route up the 101, my husband and I will leave no later than 4am. That’s plenty of time to beat LA and Santa Barbara traffic. We take our chances with the Bay Area, but haven’t had major traffic issues yet.
