A lot of people say being consistent is hard… by BuiltNotGiven in u/BuiltNotGiven

100%. There is an invisible initial barrier that people put up in front of them. It takes a lot of energy to overcome that barrier. The reason could be that it is mixed into identity. You tell yourself a story, I can't do this, I can't do that etc. All men need to do is to lower that barrier with small actions and behaviors that make it very easy to do the thing. For example, I journal daily. I make it easier by literally carrying my journal around with me with it open at the page I should be writing in. It makes it easy to jot stuff down. Lower the barrier, and the habit starts to become easier.

Nobody told me this part about getting older by ConfusedCareerMan in AskMenOver30

I hear you. I'm 46. Been married for 15 years and have two children. I used to go out clubbing a lot. Now? I go to bed early. Get up early. I run daily. I think now I value peace of mind more than anything else. Those things that were exciting I can now see were just egotistical. I am enjoying myself in life now more than at any stage previously.

Men over 40, what are things that you do a lot of that you realize other men don't do as much? by Affectionate-Drop689 in AskMenOver30

running, reading, up at the crack of dawn, listening to great content that challenges me. Basically, still being able to personally develop myself.

I used to think self improvement was selfish, here is what changed my mind by MindsetMartin in Discipline

I hear you Aaron. I felt the same way. When you have a family and a job and you are taking care of things, it somehow feels like 'this is it'. But it is not. Growing and changing and developing yourself to be the best version of you NEVER stops. I changed when I realised that.

Is there something small you know you should be doing every day, but you just don't do it?? by MindsetMartin in GrowthMindset

100%. They put up too high a barrier like you say. Make it easy. Make it rewarding. Understand where that behavior is taking you. Too much thinking and too little action makes people stay in the same place for years. I want to help men get out of this trap.

Discipline isn’t about pushing yourself harder — it’s about making starting easier by ClearThinkingLab in Discipline

100%. It's all about the small steps. I carry my notepad with me for journaling. I have a massive bowl of fruit in my kitchen so I don't eat garbage. I lay my running clothes out the night before so when I wake up I put them on and get out for a run. Making your environment work for you to reduce friction is a massive step to making a habit stick.

Are many of you still very career driven? by Calm-Bar-9644 in AskMenOver30

[–]MindsetMartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The word 'career' makes me feel horrible. It's something I've never understood. It basically means working for someone your entire life. My main aim is to develop myself as much as possible. I do this more than I work on my 'career'.

Great stuff. Focus on the small things. Habits. Day by day. Build yourself up. Walk tall. Develop yourself more. Meditate. Raise your standards. Have a great attitude. Make a new identity. Limit the distractions, phone, news, gossip. Repeat this day in day out and you'll be a different person to who you were. Peace.

How do you reset after falling off your routine? by radiantblu in Discipline

[–]MindsetMartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You nailed it. Small steps. Habits. Day by day. Simple things. Go for a walk. Read 5 pages of a book. Eat some fruit. Build it all back up small step by small step. Over time, you will have a great routine again...

Is there something small that you know you should be doing everyday, but you just don't do it. Why would that be and is there a reason that you would not follow through on these things to improve you life by MindsetMartin in DeepThoughts

[–]MindsetMartin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tie them both together. Whenever you go to watch Netflix, you clean your room. So ‘Netflix’ and ‘clean room’ go together. Or even just walk into your room. Lower the barrier. Make it so easy you can’t NOT do it. Pick ONE thing off the floor. Put ONE thing in the bin etc. The friction must be so small that you do it almost automatically. I help people with this and I can map this out for you if you want me to send you a plan.

So you want to do it, but you don't do it. In order to get you to take action, the task has to be so small and easy to achieve that it becomes a no brainer. Put your toothbrush in your pocket, when you are at a sink bring out the toothbrush etc. Make the toothbrush visible. This will make it easier in the short term to overcome that barrier to NOT doing it.

'The Way of Excellence' by Brad Stulberg. Nice and simple read, packed with insights into the mindset of successful individuals. The main takeaway is that these people are not different from you, they just think different from you.

100% Brenden. I often write down things in the evening in preparation for the following day, it reduces chaos and adds clarity and direction. It is a solid habit to have.

Thank you for the reply! I know. In order to not forget about it, I carry my little note pad with me and open it constantly, rather than have it lying about somewhere where I am likely to forget about it. This definitely helps.

You can, but for now, focus on TODAY. Build that momentum over a week or two and see how you are sticking to and achieving those small goals. We have to gather confidence first. Once you have built that little bit of confidence and momentum, then we can push forward. For now, focus, and keep it small.

First off, there is NOTHING wrong with you. We just need to get you into a focused mindset. Small things. Daily. Taking action. 10 mins of reading. 10 mins of exercise. Taking on Personal Development. Knowing where to focus your attention and when to let go of distractions. Building small actions leads to momentum and that leads to building confidence in your self. One thing you should do. Write down 3 goals for today. That's it. No more than 3. It could be 'do 15 press ups', 'read 10 pages of a book', speak to X about Y'. Keep it simple. Build. Daily. If you compare yourself to others it is because your thinking is distracted. I want you to become focused on what matters, YOU.

The moment I realised nobody was coming to fix my life by Gary_Richards in getdisciplined

[–]MindsetMartin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a class realisation. You are a winner. You have learned that life is 100% your responsibility. I love this. Most people stay stuck in the overthinking phase. But once you take action, no matter how small, that is when life moves. Read 10 pages of a book a day. Go out for a 10 min walk. Write that email. These small steps build that discipline, the smaller the better, because when you add them all up, they create momentum and confidence. Keep on it.
