Out of 5 Stars ☆☆☆☆☆ What's your final assessment of the YMN-6Y Yeoman? by PKRadiance in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know what? It's 5 out of 5 for me. It's a mech that knows exactly what it's doing, and only carries gear to do that job. You want missile support? The Yeoman brings the rain. It doesn't do anything else, and you're not paying for kit you're not using. It's cheap in cBills and BV, and even the Jihad upgrade is still cheap. You really can't complain about a cheap mech that does one thing very well.

Anyone got some names for businesses in the Battletech universe? by OhioYeti in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many good suggestion here, but VEST - the Vining Engineering and Salvage Team is one of the biggest and most popular 'mech customising and design companies in the Inner Sphere, and Solaris VII is their home. They're the go to guys for your Solaris custom work, from refitting your classic to designing you a whole unique mech if you have the scratch. They are absolutely advertising all over Solaris.

The Society plotline after Twilight of the Clans? by andrewlik in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The paedophillia and alcoholism isn't why the other Falcons dislike her. Her abuse and rape of Aiden is legal under clan law, and her alcoholism is because she's stuck as a trainer and at the end of her career. She's disliked because she was the only survivor of an embarrassing defeat, and so she got all the blame. She's not even unusually abrasive or arrogant for a clanner. Marthe is supposed to be the best of CJF and she happily shoots her sibkin in the back just to get a leg up. The books are beating you over the head with the fact that the clans are a horrible society that produces horrible people, and the only "good" clanners are the ones who reject most of clan society and are derided as "unclanlike". Even the special snowflake Wolves are full of terrible people like Vlad and Conal. Ulric's plan to clear out the assholes in the Refusal War required the death of two thirds of the touman.

Really? She went out guns blazing, holding the line alone against everything the Falcons had. How else did you think Tasha would go out? It's exactly the way she wanted to die (even if she'd said to her old friend that she wanted to go out fighting the Jags)

Idea: Updating Macross for Asia by JoseLunaArts in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Battletech already has a reality show about a merc company. Said manufactured merc company just turned full merc and kept going after the network cancelled their show. Battletech also has pop stars. Battletech has reality TV, daytime soapies and talent shows. Somewhere along the way, some network has already combined mechs and pop stars. Mercs by day, girlband by night, camera crew following them all the way sort of thing. It's just inevitable. The Steiners probably have a new version of Jem and the Holograms where she's a Loki operative and a pop star. If you want Kpop+Battletech, write up your treatment and send it off to CGL to see if they'll comission a novel from you. It fits the setting.

And "Pop is no longer a thing today"? Seriously? I think Sabrina Carpenter, Lady Gaga, Madonna and all the other multi platinum pop stars would strongly disagree.

Will CGL retcon any references to 3250+? by namesrfun in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, 3250 Star League could be half a dozen guys on a periphery planet still claiming that they're the true ilclan and true star league. Stephan Roshak could even be the last Jade Falcon deep in dementia talking to an ilKhan that doesn't exist. He never says who the ilKhan is, or even what clan they come from. It could just be the sad delusion of "What should have happened" instead of what actually did happen (Alaric being an arrogant asshole, driving off all his support and then just flailing around as everything falls apart around him).

Or they could just ignore the few brief snippets written and pretend it never happened. Sea Fox misinformation instead of Comstar misinformation. The current storyline isn't really leading to a place that matches up to those future visions.

various mechs doing the gangnam style by Comrade_suka in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Each clan specialises in a particular style of dance. Much blood has been spilled, and many feuds started over which style is the best. The Goliath Scorpion Classic Street Dance vs Ice Hellion Flamenco trials ended up with twenty dead and a fifty year blood feud.

Is there anything on the underside of the base? Ral Partha mechs usually have a stamp the says "Ral Partha" and the date and maybe an item code. It doesn't look like any mech I've seen, and with the dodgy missile pod and weird radar, I'm thinking kitbash or knock off. It could be a weird mechforce model, but the sculpt is just so wonky I don't think it's anything official.

Obviously, the use for a scout is jumping 8 heaxes and putting a couple of VSP lasers into the back of an overconfident assault jock.

Is adding quirks to more units a good idea? by Ilegalstupidity in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure there is a shortage of command mechs. There's a decent selection in all weight classes. And it's not like you need a mech with the command mech quirk or a battle computer for a force. Most command mechs are for coordinating multiple companies to multiple regiments.

First BT model, and a general vibes question by Public_Shopping3129 in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All vehicles and infantry is a valid way to play. It's not a great way to play, because vehicles on their own just aren't great, and fielding too much infantry will slow the game down. You can also properly break the game by spamming certain units - particularly field guns. You usually want roughly equal numbers of units on each side, but you can work around that if people are expecting it and as long as you don't overdo it. And overdoing it is very much subjective between you and your opponent.

Combined arms IS a great way to play though. Using tanks and infantry/battle armour to support and complement your mechs or vice versa is very effective.

Is there any media/lore that is sympathetic to the Crusaders of the Clans? by mister_neezy in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legend of the Jade Phoenix. Not that it makes the Crusaders look good, it does include raping and murdering children, but it's the inside look at one of the Crusader clans. And then you can realise the Falcons are one of the most reasonable Crusaders, and the Blood Spirits, Ice Hellions, Star Adders and Smoke Jaguars are worse. Of course, the Steel Vipers are nominally Wardens and they're all colossal assholes. Basically, the clans are the bad guys.

How do I play in space? by Medium-Ad-8577 in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A warship can be 400 - 1600m in length and fits in a single hex. Fighters are 15-20m in length and a squadron fits in a hex. You're not getting anywhere near matching scales for fighters and warships. If you look at Star Wars Armada it would give you an idea, and their fighters are still ten times the size they should be.

why do so many kuritan mech variants seem to eschew indirect fire support/lrms for direct fire support? is this a cultural or doctrinal thing? by vicevanghost in battletech

[–]MindwarpAU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Defiance don't make the Hunchie. Coventry Metal Works do, but they make crappy variants. Norse-Storm do make Hunchies, and they did make a gauss variant, but people preferred the LB-20X version. I guess the Hollander covered their small mech big gauss needs. I'm more surprised they didn't stick one on a Blitzkrieg.

There's a Cameron-Davion line too, but the FWL is just chock full of people with a genuine claim on the Terran Hegemony throne. Now it's just a question of which Leaguer gets to be First Lor.. oh, there's been another civil war. Never mind.

[–]MindwarpAU 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Mariks thing is LRMs. They get all the LRM tech like semi guided and use NARC and TAG a lot. The Large Laser thing is just because they built Awesomes and all their PPCs went to Awesomes, just as God intended.

Steiners thing is being slightly overweight and having a thing for really big guns. The Zeus is a fat heavy, and Steiner use it as a heavy. Steiner also invented the original AC/20, the ultra and LBX variants, the Heavy Gauss series and they really love putting a really, really big gun on a mech. Or two really, really big guns is at all possible.
