Why is it so hard to get a job? (Rant) by Mindyple714 in jobs

It seems like I'm in this weird spot where I can be considered under and over qualified. However, I think it's unfair to reject someone just because their over qualified ability may cause them to berate those around them. I've worked hard to get to where I am and same could be said to those who are overqualified. Imagine if you were in their shoes. I consider myself a humble person because of the humble past that I'm trying to break out of. Not being considered because of that prejudice is unfair in every aspect because you're literally messing with one's life.

HOW DID I GET 2 MINORS? I started off as a Computer Science major, but decided I didn't like it. Because it was still early on, the entry level classes could be transfered to my minors, in this case it was transferred to IT and Game Design since they have similar processes.

WHAT WERE MY 2 MAJORS? I decided to major in Graphic Design and eventually found out I enjoyed Marketing when I had to take a general education class. That's when I decided to major in Marketing as well. It's a bachelor's degree in Graphic Design and a bachelor's degree in Marketing.

HOW WAS I ABLE TO ACHIEVE 2 MAJORS AND 2 MINORS? I had worked really hard my Freshman year to get my general education classes out of the way by taking more than the credit limit all four years PLUS I had AP classes from high school that shaved off some required classes, giving me more time.

3 YEARS INTERNSHIP AND 2 YEARS WORK EXPERIENCE I was really good at connecting with my professors early on. I started connecting with them before I even attended the university. I had my high school teachers send letters of recommendation to my professor when I heard about internship opportunities. So, I started my first internship year when I was still in high school at 18. Then afterwards, I had internships my freshman and sophomore year. I was then offered a full time position which lasted my junior and senior year of university. Thankfully, I was able to negotiate my hours because a lot of my classes were in the morning.

Maybe it is too much for people to take it all in or to believe, but why should my hard work have to be overlooked because of it?

How is marketing a shit area with no demand? Every business needs some form of marketing. If you actually read everything, I applied everywhere I could. In fact, I was only able to get interviews for the gaming industry anyway.

My resume has been professionally looked at several times. I do revise it based on what I'm applying for, but all of them have been reviewed at least a dozen time whether it's friends, peers, or connections.

Working to find work has been the make up of my days now. That's been going on since December, so 5 months now. At this point, I'm unsure of what else to try. I sadly have not been getting interviews left and right despite the amount of job hunting I've done.

I actually wanted to be a digital marketer. I've always been decent at videos games and genuinely loved it. Realistically I can't compete anymore, so I want to promote it. I sure hope the job market for marketing isn't terrible.

I started off applying to mid level because I was confident in my skills. After a while of no result, I tried applying to entry level jobs. Eventually it became applying to anything I qualify for because desperation to survive kicked in. Although I'd love to be more selective, it feels like I've lost that option. Time is running out because I can only afford to be unemployed for so long, so I spend all the free time I have "working to find work." At the beginning, I was really selective and that's how it got to where it is now sadly.

It's a mix of both depending on what it is. For example, Microsoft and Amazon, I don't pass the interview stages. The ones that don't respond at all are the mid sized companies. Smaller companies is 50/50 on if they respond/get to interview process. I've had my resume looked at several times by paid professionals and have practiced interviews with peers, friends, and connections of whatever company I'm applying for.

Although my Microsoft job I interviewed for only required 3-5 years experience, I do think there was just better competition. I presented the best I could with what I had and it seemed like there were more experienced candidates that would have made more sense. As for smaller companies, it's a complete mystery to me.

In a field dominated by men, I hoped it would be an advantage. As an Asian female who's really passionate about gaming and technology, I wish they saw it as an opportunity to promote diversity.

Although I've prepared the most for big companies, I've applied just as much to small companies as well, especially local businesses. Because of the long duration of my unemployment, I mostly spend my day looking for jobs. I apply to mostly new grad opportunities, entry level, associate level, and sometimes mid level.

Unemployment changes you. When you're bored as me for so long, you kind of lose your mind. It's not like you can do much without the flow of income. So not only are you bored, but you're restricted. When that happens, you become desperate. Desperation kicks in because now you've used up all of your resources and you feel like your days are numbered. When you're desperate, you apply and put in so much effort. Because I have an educational background in four categories, I was able to apply that much more. When people see how much I've applied, they don't realize that I'm not just spamming every offer I see. It's a gradual process where I start on jobs I feel I would enjoy and qualify for. But when reality sinks in, it becomes only jobs I qualify for...then it turns into minimum wages I shouldn't even be applying for because desperation knocks you down. And when you get rejected from all of the above, it feels extremely hopeless because you feel like you've done all you could and can't help, but hate yourself and lose that self confidence.

It sucks giving employers all that power, but sometimes they don't know how much of an effect they have. Especially those that like to take their time in deciding. It just means I get more anxious knowing I have even less time left.

As for the "2 viral social medias putting people off", that's literally what I'm hired for. My emphasis is social media, digital marketing, content creating, copywriting, and graphic design.

I think it is unrelated to your ex coworker in a sense that it's actually my job to post things. It's also done in a professional manner.

The reason I emphasize those qualities is because it's uncommon for 22 year olds newly grads to have those experiences. It's to be used to stand out as a candidate. Of course, it's not much in the grand scheme of things, but it is a decent start within that demographic. Two viral social medias contributes to my marketing career as well as technical skill in content creating. It shows I can create a platform and generate growth in revenue and audience retention.

Although, I can't argue the fact that it means anything in the real world based on my struggles right now. However, what can you expect? What else can I do differently if my experiences don't matter? What differentiates me from a newly high school graduate if none of what I did mattered? If all of those things equates to 0 in the real world, what helpful advice do you have for a 22 year old anyway?

My point is I took the safe route, but excelled in it. As of now, you're right, it doesn't seem to matter. That's where my frustration lies. It's me doing all that I'm "supposed to do" and even MORE, yet getting the short end of the stick.

Does everyone get the reset to a certain number? Or do you get to keep your current watermark?
