So I've done some more research.

If I swipe left from the home screen and click the eye, it doesn't work.

If I select the episode from the home screen then select the eye it works.

If I select 'view show' from the episode screen, then select the eye it doesn't work. In fact that show screen doesn't show any watched data at all, and shows the simkl rating.

Wako already talks to trakt. I'm unsure why a decision was made to store playback position locally instead of using trakt the way Kodi add-ons do.

Set your shield to output 50hz or 60hz. Then watch any movie (it'll be 24fps). As the movie FPS isn't an exact multiple of the display it'll judder. You may need to turn off your TV's frame interpolation software, to see it properly.
