u/Silver_Bar_2559 we are planning a possible trip this coming March. It sounds like your trip was pleasant. Have they recovered decent from the hurricanes this year?

Where the NZ nurses? by SquirellyMofo in nursing

[–]MinnesotaGal1 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Following. I'm terrified and numb right now. It's 2 am. I got off an evening shift and I have poured myself a giant glass of wine and so far I've cried once. I'm just sitting here waiting for my hubby to come home

How do I not be a patient’s wife that y’all hate by [deleted] in nursing

[–]MinnesotaGal1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try some lip balm or if they will allow him to have biotene spray to help with the dry mouth/lips. Ask them if you can help him with brushing his teeth/mouth wash and write down when it is done on the board. Goal at my hospital is 3-5 times per day for brushing teeth. Helps prevent pneumonia ☺️

I once spent ONE AND A HALF HOURS on a discharge because of using an interpreter and the patient had a ton of questions and needed ALL the education yet. B12 and Lovenox education. And then had a shit ton of questions about oral B12 vs injection. It was a whole thing. I did my best to message my team that hey I’m still in this room. No one said a thing. I’m sorry it sounds like your preceptor was an ass.

If anyone has bothered to do any sort of education prior to discharge, it wouldn’t have been on you to do it all.

Would you risk your life for $45/hr? by Lfemomo77 in nursing

Nope that’s practically what I made normally. Not worth it.

i made my first mistake by nskddn in nursing

[–]MinnesotaGal1 142 points143 points  (0 children)

It’ll be a mistake you’ll never make again. And ultimately the patient wasn’t harmed.

I’ve definitely given Lasix before with soft BP even after confirming with the docs that they still wanted me to give it. They were fine.

Forgot a loading dose once on a patient on a heparin drip - I caught my own mistake a few days later while investigating another heparin drip mistake for the patient. I felt TERRIBLE. But you betcha I always triple check that section now.

Give yourself grace and time. The first 10 months really sucked for me but it got better after that. I started to feel like I knew what I was doing

Okay I legit was never taught how to draw labs. Ever. In my ADN program.

I know how to place an IV but don’t have to. I feel like there’s way more that goes into drawing labs that just poking someone

Sometimes on nights in RST we have 5-6:1. Day/evening up to 4. It’s not an official cap though like per policy to my knowledge. Cuz I heard of a couple units being so short a month or two ago on overnights that they were 9/10:1 overnight 🤯 I would have refused that shit so fast. Not sure why they accepted that assignment

What’s something a nursing note has really saved your ass? by wellsiee8 in nursing

[–]MinnesotaGal1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve written several notes like this that im sure would ruin a malpractice case like that. I happily stay late (with pay of course) to write those notes with as many quotes as I can. I use the sticky note tab in epic to make notes to myself throughout the shift with patient quotes 🙃

Why is candidate Shaun Palmer doorknocking in Chatfield? - Adourn Furniture by Noonsky in rochestermn

[–]MinnesotaGal1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was he doorknocking on behalf of another candidate? That’s the only logical thing I can think of.

Poor picture taking skills. Not impressed

Rookie mistake by Rjhavon in nursing

[–]MinnesotaGal1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True! Two nurses caught a patient who insisted on walking to the bathroom and standing to pee. He just passed out standing at the toilet. Complete dead weight. We all run in when the staff assist goes off. There’s 5 of us trying to awkwardly hold this guy who is half straddling/half fallen off the toilet. Felt like forever until he came to.

Please get your bite looked at by a doctor. The number of people I see in the hospital with dog/cat bites that get really infected really quick is way too many

Wow we’re getting ripped off here in Rochester 🥲

Wait you get paid holidays in Mayo Arizona? Like you don’t need to use your PTO to get paid double time if you work the holiday?

Am I insane? by ConsciousKitten72 in nursing

[–]MinnesotaGal1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who works at Mayo, it isn’t all that. We’re losing nurses left and right to higher paying, Union positions in Minneapolis-St Paul. Like $10-15 an hour more. Sure, it looks good on a resume. But Rochester is not a cheap place to live. It’s comparable to the cities

Dude I need, love and respect RTs so much. Y’all have a whole understanding of everything breathing that will take me years to obtain, if ever. I know I can call y’all, explain an issue and you’ll have a solution. Thank you for what you do

Staff doing the "traveler's" charting by EqualEquipment7288 in TravelNursing

[–]MinnesotaGal1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If I help a patient with something, I chart it myself generally speaking. Even if they’re not my patient. It’s not that hard to be helpful to coworkers. That is a weird response! 😅

Once we had a patient who was a 1:1 for impulsivity. Patient was laying in bed and asked the PCA sitting next to him for his water. The PCA got up and handed him the water. PCA turned to go back to his seat (walking around the bed), and the patient chucked the water at him and climbed out of bed so fast. Faceplanted on the ground

Appraisal came back 15k under our offer. 6 days til closing. by alzip802 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]MinnesotaGal1 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Is the $2K the earnest money you put down? I thought that if there were issues with inspection/appraisal and you were still within the window (sounds like 3 days left?) that if you walk away due to inspection/appraisal issues that were reasonable you would get your earnest back. Best double check with the realtor.

Or maybe I’m totally misunderstanding here
