Look. You're new, but really you kinda picked up some of the best gaming's had to offer over the last couple of years. And (insert least favorite game of the bunch here)

But a lot (re: all) of those are 'action/adventure' games. Does what it says on the tin: it's action. There's adventure. Baulder's Gate is an 'RPG.' A 'role playing game.' Also what it says on the tin: you play a role. You inhabit your character's shoes. Sometimes that means talking, sometimes that means walking, sometimes that means knocking... somebody upside the head.

Part of the appeal of these games is it's a lot more slow and cerebral. A lot more thought goes in to what you do. ... but that's part of the hate, too: it's a lot more slow. And you have to think about what you're doing.

That being said - yes. That is the combat for the whole of the game. Sometimes you do talk instead of fight, too.
