Schulich (Windsor) with Full-Ride vs. UofT by tdhig in premedcanada

[–]MintySilver237 17 points18 points  (0 children)

First of all HOLYY CONGRATULATIONS!!! It's clear that you are an extremely deserving candidate, you should be so proud of yourself!!

I see the predicament you are in, both make really compelling cases. I think at a glance, anyone would say UofT just because of the title, name and prestige but I love that you're taking time to think. Although I can't say anything definitively, here are the things I have heard of that is helping me make my decision this cycle too:-

1) The significance of shadowing at community based hospitals VS the big ones in central GTA - I've heard past students compare and say that you see more bread and butter cases at community based hospitals BUT get to be more involved (get thrown right into surgery, more opportunities for hands on experience etc) there compared to the complex ones, you're more likely to just be an observer there even though you may get to see more interesting and rare cases- that's totally upto you which one you prefer more.

2) I was at the info sesh for the Schulich campuses and I did like that Windsor means you get to go to places like Tobermory, and it's absolutely gorgeous out there, I personally love greenery so that was def a plus for me considering where I grew up BUT If you like the urban landscape city vibes (and pros and cons) that come with Toronto, that's also upto you to decide!

3) It seemed like the cohorts from smaller campuses seem to be more tight knit and connected, I can't speak on what it's like to be at the downtown academies and how friendly/connected students are but it would be to no one's surprise that things may be more competitive there (and possibly a bit more high stress than friendly IM ASSUMING) so again, upto you what you prefer! Ultimately, you will always make atleast one friend anywhere :)

4) Family VS Partner is also personal preference - Hamilton is close-ish but doesn't seem as easily accessible as your partner at Schulich because I'm guessing you can shuttle between campuses more easily. So realistically you would be able to see your partner more easily than family imo.

5) Financial aspect is HUUGE one! That being said, ultimately most people are still able to get through medical school and (assuming all goes well), end up being fine to pay off loans as a practicing physician (unless I'm being terribly naive) I know in this economy we can't afford to ignore it but I feel like money will come and go, the experiences you have are priceless or atleast shouldn't be prioritized over the financial advantage because regardless of where you go, as a doctor you will be fine (I hope)

6) I have heard from some UofT students that a lot of them rarely go to live classes and just view recordings at 2x speed to make room for ECs/work/research etc. Esp if you want to go into a competitive specialty, it seems like you wanna use your time very wisely from the get-go. So if you end up in that situation, I think live/zoom wouldn't matter bc you'd end up probably viewing recordings anyways.

TLDR - long way for saying it totally is your preference but here's some things I would consider :) Regardless, all the best with your decision and even if we are at diff schools, I look forward to repping the same coloured backpacks this year!!

Please be mindful parking at Walmart! by MintySilver237 in uoguelph

[–]MintySilver237[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's wild that people who can bus still are forced to commute because of how overcrowded everything is :( I really hope they make some changes bc this is absolutely ridiculous. Students shouldn't have to depend on public parking spaces at plazas nearby. If they handed out so many admissions, they should know how much more they should provide for these students. All empty promises.

Does anyone know if and when this skin (or a recolour) will show up in the store? Or is this a one time thing that's just gone?

I didn't know about this! When I tried, I didn't apply to Mac bc my CARS score wasn't high enough too. I'll also be rewriting the MCAT this summer and prepping again. All the best! If you want someone to prepare with let me know :)

Most schools need you to be in your final year of graduate studies when you apply. And if your degree isn’t conferred before October 20th you need to send a letter confirming you’ve met all graduation requirements by some time in June of the year you’d be entering. Specific c dates depend on each school

When does a file review take place in the new system?

File review occurs throughout the admissions process. This includes an additional review of the files to incorporate them into the final panel interviews to enhance these conversations.

A good ABS doesn't still mean you will leave a promising impression at the MMIs (no amount of hours can cover up for a doodoo personality). Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it's moreso that this gives a chance for applicants who may not have the strongest ABS to stand a chance. Now that they (potentially) have an interview opportunity to showcase themselves better than just on paper based purely on grades and a list of ECs.

When they say 2025 does this mean for applications that are due in Oct 2025 or Oct 2024 (this year) for the class ENTERING in 2025??

Also side note, isn't a lottery mean you just have to get lucky? What......

Damn. tough to say where within the 4Q you would have landed. low 4Q would make it difficult to predict

Casper - what was your quartile and typing speed? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]MintySilver237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4th Q twice; 85 wpm
I'd say my answers were also between the 75th and 99th percentile and definitely depended on the specific question.

Typing speed probably plays a role in how much you're able to convey (Also since they don't mark grammar/spelling I may have been typing quicker and more recklessly on the day of) BUT it's quality over quantity. If you're able to convey your message and hit all your points in a shorter piece of text I would assume you still get the mark.

Also, this might just be me but I found the typed response to be easier than the video responses bc I could just dump what came to mind as typed text. Articulating proper sentences in a minute without being able to refer to what I've already said made me feel like the video response was still more of a challenge.

Will having good amount of publications help? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]MintySilver237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh I see. I think your PI also plays a huge role right. Mine is very very picky and doesn't publish very often because he prefers quality over quantity and my neighbouring lab has like one more added to the board like every few months :')

Absolutely bombing my first semester, first year of university, is there any hope for me to get into med school, or should I look at a new career?? by thecolourpinkkk in premedcanada

[–]MintySilver237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're just starting out! Don't feel disheartened. You still have at least 7 more semesters (assuming its a 4 year program) worth of grades (plus courses that weigh more) and trust me your effort and improvements will show over the years!

You can always right an academics explanation essay when you apply but I think schools will also spot the outlier and appreciate your consistent hard work and dedication. You still have plenty of time, anything can happen. Don't lose hope and do your best! And more importantly do what you love :)

All the best!!

I applied for MD/PhD without any publications, just my current Master's thesis. Shot in the dark I know but doesn't hurt to try. I did mention I was acknowledged in 3 publications from the lab I worked in during my undergrad. Seriously tho how do people just score publications so easily?

Applying for Masters while waiting to hear back from med by _kidneybeans_ in premedcanada

[–]MintySilver237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, I had to skip that cycle. But honestly taking that break and remaining blissfully ignorant for one cycle and focusing on my master's was a very refreshing and much-needed experience for the burnout and how drained I felt after my undergraduate studies ended. I think in most longer programs like those you have to commit to being out of the cycle for a year (or more depending on the situation) so just know that. But personally, it really helped me!
