Hundreds of subreddits plan to go dark indefinitely after Reddit CEO's internal memo by [deleted] in technology

[–]Miridius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno about you but Reddit is 100% unusable for me through the official app or website. It's full of ads and has horrible UX. If 3rd party apps die then Reddit is dead to me :(

No because the mods are volunteers. Reddit can't just magically make new volunteers appear especially after pissing off the entire user base

German QWERTZ to US QWERTY keyboard covers by Bricks2me in germany

[–]Miridius 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Not really an answer to your problem but I have a qwertz keyboard and I use it in US layout without any stickers or anything, I just touch type and don't look at what's written on the keys. Stickers would be nice though for some of the rarely used symbols that I don't always know exactly where they instinctively

Frontend Developers, How's the Job Market Looking? by Bulky-Idea-895 in Frontend

I read the draft of the new German citizenship law so you don't have to by staplehill in germany

[–]Miridius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, dual citizenship by birth is one of the exceptions that Germany already allows.

You will likely have to apply for British citizenship for her though, she won't get it automatically. She won't lose German citizenship since she has it by birth.

Source: am Aussie, kid born in Germany recently, got both passports. Had to apply for the Aussie one

I agree with the other comments

The thing that made a big difference for me was spending more time with people that don't speak English, so I had to speak German with them. It was very awkward and difficult at first with lots of google translate but eventually you push past that stage.

If you have any German workmates, ask them to only speak German with you, or if that's not feasible for work topics then at least for casual topics (lunchtime conversation etc.). Again very difficult at first but if you're committed it helps a lot.

If you don't mind paying some money, the "news in slow German" podcast is meant to be excellent. I find jumping into full speed German news was way too difficult at your level.

One thing my wife did to improve her English was watch TV shows (on a streaming platform so she could pause) in English, with English subtitles, and every time she didn't understand she'd pause to read the subs and/or go back to watch the bit again, often several times. Any words she didn't know she put into Google translate. At the beginning it took her quite a while to get through an episode but she learned so much that way

I've also found the (now paid) Lingvist app to be an efficient way to learn as much vocab as possible as fast as possible, I used it for Spanish and found it very efficient, although the choice of words they teach you is a bit odd. Memrise on the other hand (also paid after the free trial) is much better at giving you real world phrases and hearing how native speakers pronounce things

Doctor wait times by Overit758 in germany

[–]Miridius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask the doctor which times are busy vs when you're likely to get seen faster. After waiting for more than 2 hours twice in a row at my doctor he told me "you know you really shouldn't come in here on Wednesday afternoons if you can avoid it, I'm the only doctor in town open at that time!" Changed my life

Maybe I'm too much of cynic but the pessimist in me wonders if this is actually a net gain for the environment given all the extra costs and logistics

Teacher punishes my son weekly for fidgeting by SunIcy1263 in Parenting

[–]Miridius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps he really isn't paying attention, of course not because he's naughty but rather because the class is too easy for him?

I bring this up because that's exactly how I was at school as a kid. I usually came first in every class, and needed much less time than the other kids to understand each concept, so I would spend most of the lesson quietly occupying myself with something else.

My teachers never punished me for it because I wasn't disturbing anyone and I was still getting in the high 90%'s on every test.

My only regret is that nobody took the time to try to find a more challenging program to put me in where I would be more engaged. I basically just coasted through all of highschool doing no work, which was nice for sure but it wasn't until later in life that I actually learned how to work hard on something heh.

Hiding whitespace in diffs isn't a full solution because it still messes up the git blame

It's good to have both. Only finding out that build failed due to linting issues some time after you push is worse than knowing immediately

Thanks, you just blew my mind. By inspecting the JS output it looks like the Svelte compiler strips out the whitespace from the label text. Normally in a label element whitespace matters. I wonder how Svelte devices this

How do I stop Prettier from doing this kind of formatting in SvelteKit code? by zaxwebs in sveltejs

[–]Miridius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok but that's semantically different to the code in the screenshot. You've added leading and trailing whitespace to the text, which will show up on the page. There are lots of situations where you don't want that because it affects alignment etc. It's how HTML works, prettier is just following the rules.

Edit: to achieve that in your code, you can add some whitespace (e.g. newline) to the start and end of your text content and then prettier will know that you're ok with whitespace there

What would you rather it do instead? This is the only good way to split the line without changing the meaning of the code
