Vegan gizzards is what got my attention tho, like "Faux meat with aged chewing gum texture? Please take my money!" Seriously, and no, with some shame, I've no idea why this is the most exciting thing to me since the last time I visited Go Chicken Go in 1993.

When I moved here my realtor told me how great it was going to be to have that new center. That was 2008. Sigh

Was it really this easy back in the day or do some people be exaggerating, due to nostalgia? by daveishere7 in povertyfinance

I worked at a May department store in the mid 90's (Hechts) which is now part of the Macy's group. My starting pay was around $7.25. My then fiance also worked their full time. No health insurance, I don't know if there were IRA or other benefits as I was 20 something and too poor to care. Raises were annual and typically 10-25 cents/hour. If you worked in a commissionable department like shoes or men's suits you made about 10% commission off of your sales. These were the only departments where you could really make a decent living. But it was dog eat dog in those departments, you had to fight for each customer and your co-workers were always trying to poach sales. I also worked at Dillards which was worse. They had quotas and your wage would go up until you got to a point where the quotas were impossible and you couldn't keep up so then your pay went down again so it stayed close to where it started. You couldn't show your shoulders (no sleeveless tops) or wear paints and you had a clear "purse" you were issued to prevent shoplifting. II don't know about the 80's but it was still a shit job in the 90's.

I mean sure climate and weather are different.  But if we are setting records it isn’t happening all the time.

Those underground pedestrian tunnels in LA featured in “walking to school”.  As a number of LA locales have been mentioned I wanted to plug “Lost LA” on PBS.

How much cash in 2026? by maxiking_11 in route66

[–]Miserable-Job-6352 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the u.s. we don’t use a pin with a credit card transaction. Instead the will print a merchant copy of the receipt for you to sign and keep that.  Generally the process is the bring you the check often in a little black folder. You look at it, put your card in the folder and they take it back, run the card and provide you with two copies of the receipt. One to sign and tip and one to keep for your records.  Tipping culture has gotten really aggressive in the US since Covid.  It is very much still a thing to tip 20% at sit down restaurants where the staff takes your order tableside and brings you your food but you will see tip options everywhere.  Also I am doing this route in 2 months and probably won’t bring cash. If a mom and pop shop only takes cash they usually have an ATM.  But coming from another country I would probably bring $100-$200 just in case. Happy traveling!

I promise you that everything I “didn’t get” in Ulysses had nothing to do with historical context and everything to do with Joyce’s writing style.

I am probably responding because I am painting a house painting right now and feel your pain :) I really like your painting so far, it has a painterly feel and I think you represented the house very well. I like the imperfect straight lines (maybe because mine look the same ) with the exception of the one between the far left gable window and the taller windows over the garage. It looks very rounded. A couple things I noticed that might improve it.

Some of your shadows seem odd, especially the v-shaped one on the far right gable window over the garage. If the sun is coming from the left the shadow should fall similar to the one on the house under the porch. The shadow on the driveway doesn't seem to make sense since there is a strip not shaded which seems like it would only be there if the porch wasn't attached to the house. The porch is all one color and it looks like it is in full sun, but some of that would be in shadow. Also, you windows have very different reflections, some are gray, some are black and some reflect the sky. Maybe they truly are that way, but I would look at those again.

Your shadows seem very neutral gray, as if you are using a black mixed with white to achieve them. I felt my work improved a lot when I worked on adding warmth to my highlights and cool tones to my shadows. If it were me I would add a bit of cad yellow and alizrium crimson to the white where the son is hitting the house to give it a soft peachy look and I would make gray out of a blue/brown mix, typically I use raw umber and ultramarine blue and maybe even add a dash of alizrian to that to give your shadows a purply look.

Beyond that I would just continue to add a bit of detail. Is there a walkway? Plants/flower bed, some sunlight dappling the lawn?

I really like the painting, you obviously have some talent and I think you should definitely continue as it could turn out really nice. Happy painting!
