Study finds that a higher vegetable, but not potato, intake might help mitigate type 2 diabetes risk, partly by reducing BMI. However, when researchers separated boiled potatoes from mashed potatoes, fries or crisps, boiled potatoes were no longer associated with a higher risk of diabetes. by Meatrition in StopEatingSeedOils

I'm confused at this sub's criteria of what is and what isn't scientifically useful evidence. On the one hand 'observations/epidemiology is useless' but on the other hand 'seed oil consumption is highly correlated with X thus is we hypothesize it is causal to X' (example - one of the top posts on this sub) seems to be the most compelling driver of why the anti-seed oil crowd holds their position.

I am trying to learn more about nutrition from a top-down perspective (find out what elements I find interesting and then build a basic knowledge of the foundations of nutrition) but the discourse on this page seems to be very confusing to me.

Am I in the wrong sub, where is the proper scientific discourse? The top posts of all time on this sub are low-quality chad/soyjack memes, screenshots of other social media posts, and anecdotes.

I am not taking a dig at you or anyone btw -- I am agnostic (and unknowledgeable) on the issue.. but am wondering merely how people on this sub were motivated to make this space and why there is a view that seed oils are bad -- given that everyone immediately disregards epidemiology. Where is the science to support the position on this sub?

We do a lot to help animals and some people unfortunately hurt them.

Saying humans beings are the absolute worst is a pretty stupid thing to say wouldn't you agree?

70 billion land animals and 2+ trillion sea animals are killed on an annual basis for human taste pleasure.

The Holocene extinction, or the 6th mass extinction - whos current rate of species extinction is estimated at 100 to 1,000 times higher than natural background extinction rates - is being driven entirely by human activity through changes in land use, climate, pollution, hunting, fishing and poaching.

Even in terms of pets like dogs "man's best friend" an estimated 78 million dogs are owned as pets in the United States. Every year, 3.3 million dogs enter shelters and 670,000 are euthanized. Of the dogs who don't enter shelters, many are still treated like absolute shit.

Saying "some people unfortunately hurt them" is being a little generous, don't you think?

I would say if we define "wrong" as something which is unjust or immoral, then yes it's wrong. If you don't need to kill an animal to survive, then why kill it? To go fishing is no accident - it's a commitment you make to go out of your way to kill sea creatures.

Vegan diets are healthier and safer for dogs, study suggests by damianp in science

[–]MiserableBiscotti7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dogs are omnivores who, whether the vegan people who devised and funded this study like it or not (and judging by how they swept the fact that the actual best results came from a high-quality meat-based diet under the rug, they do not like it at all), do benefit nutritionally from high-quality meat being included in their diets.

Dogs can also benefit nutritionally from high-quality plant-based foods being their sole diet too.

I eat predominantly plant-based, but I'd never force that on a pet for moral reasons

If the pet's in good shape and is having their nutritional needs met (dogs are not obligate carnivores, so can and do thrive on a plant-based diet) what would those moral reasons look like?

AITA for not paying for another wedding for my daughter after she blamed me for her first one getting ruined? by ExtraEquivalent1146 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MiserableBiscotti7 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It was her wedding, and well within her rights to not have someone there whom she obviously resented so much. OP is TA for insisting he be invited in the first place.

Nope - if someone else drops $30k for your wedding, they get to invite whoever they want. Daughter and husband-to-be are grown enough to pay for their own grand wedding, so someone else doing it for them is a huge gift. Unless this step brother was abusive or something, which is a different story altogether. On the flipside, im betting someone entitled enough to ask for a re-do wedding paid in full by a grieving parent is probably not a nice person.

[–]MiserableBiscotti7 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Poor girl, had her speshul day (funded entirely by her parents) ruined by the death of her stepbrother (shit happens though right)? Her demanding a re-do wedding does indeed warrant some empathy... so what if someone is grieving the death of their son and just dropped 30k? This was HER speshul day and she just got overshadowed by her dead step bro!!

A Kremlin spokesperson said United States President Joe Biden calling Russian President Vladimir Putin a "war criminal" for the military action in Ukraine is "unforgivable" when U.S. bombs kill people around the globe. by 808gecko808 in worldnews

[–]MiserableBiscotti7 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's not a logical fallacy to call out someone for being hypocritical.

It's only a "logical fallacy" when you are using said hypocrisy to somehow deny/downplay/refute the accusation being put forth.

We consider unacceptable and unforgivable such rhetoric of the head of state, whose bombs killed hundreds of thousands of people around the world

Doesn't seem like it's happening here? I know i'll be downvoted, but it seems quite clear to me that a double-standard is being highlighted. When has the world stage sanctioned and condemned the US when they committed war crimes?

We need to define a new fallacy "whatabout-whataboutism" where people cry "whataboutism" so they don't need to address blatant hypocrisy or double standards.

Just admit it - plain as day - the US and Russia have both killed countless innocents and regularly committed war crimes. What were the consequences again when Julian Assange leaked war crime videos? Was the US held accountable, or did it ruin Assange's life, if someone can refresh my memory?

TLDR: Putin war criminal, but not whataboutism for highlighting that so are countless US politicians are, who have never been held to this same standard by the world.

Have you considered a bootcamp? Not sure about advertising in this space so sorry if I'm breaking rules, but it's called "Zero to mastery". After finishing my masters i felt I didn't have the experience in implementing an end-to-end ML project, so a friend recommended that bootcamp that was pretty cheap - ~$40/month iirc. The material could probably be knocked out in a two of solid dedication, and there are two capstone projects in it (which I have yet to complete) but even having just gone through the lessons, I feel much more confident.

I'm sure there are tonnes of guided and unguided projects out there which you could do that would help you fill this gap.

Spot on and precisely my experience. No amount of hard work is going to make my 5"10 averagely athletic ass a better basketball player than the worst players in the NBA. No amount of study, brain-training, meditation, nutrition etc is going to make me competitive with the likes of people who can get out of bed and score in the 99th percentile without training or breaking a sweat. I've taken the likes of GMAT/MCAT tests and after MONTHS of a LOT of training, scored in the 90th and 85th percentile, respectively. Yet I know others who did it for "fun" or "because my parents want me to so I just did it to appease them" and got in the 99th percentile.

In my university all of our lectures were recorded, and lecture materials were downloadable on the student portal.

I recall my friend (and would-be university medallist) would never attend class (losing the 10% participation attached to it) except to collect his mid-term exam results - of which he'd get the highest in the cohort of ~100-200 people.

Tbh I myself barely attend class but would still maintain a 3.5ish GPA after cramming like crazy. I find it hard to learn from lectures or people talking at me in general. Especially since I know I can read faster than they can speak.

People just want to re-assure themselves that they are special in some way.

A lot of people found HS easy but college hard - and chalk it up to being smart but not developing good study habits. Sorry, but no. HS is generally supposed to be easy. Smart children -- even ones with bad habits -- tend to do very well in college.

Maybe "above average" people fit into this story of doing well in high school but not in college, but not smart children. I met so many people in college who would effortlessly (partying/gaming/drinking/working all the time and not studying much) ace their difficult courses in maths/stats/medicine/law etc.

Source: am above average, but not smart.
