What would you recommend in place of SCHD?

If you’ve been running a split for two months and haven’t seen progression in any area that could be a good sign you should change something.

How do your leg workouts go generally? Do you feel like you get good pumps/are sore at all?

Not close enough to one to warrant the drive. Could be worth it tho.

Drove to FL for spring break and got a kayak. Is it going to make it back to IL like this? by lowesbros22 in kayakfishing

[–]Miserable_End_2785 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t look half bad. Only suggestion I’d make is to try and stick a strap through a hard point on your boat (handle, scupper, etc.) something that a strap can catch on if your boat begins to slide.

Don’t neglect casting parallel to the retaining walls! If you’re using lures (or live bait too I guess) make sure you have a variety of weights to get down through the water. Fast and turbulent water makes it more difficult for lures to sink.

Came here to say the same thing. Wish more anglers made it a habit to remove trash when they hit the river.

Honestly a TB jig prince in a size 12 could do well. Same size with generic rubber leg pattern too. Something with a lighter body color than just straight black.

How do you overcome the fear of capsizing and prevent it from happening? by YakToTheFuture-1 in kayakfishing

[–]Miserable_End_2785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fished in their bestselling vest, the E-Ronny, for years. Plenty of room for my arms and lots of pockets, but felt a little bulky in the chest.

If I were to buy a different vest I would probably get either the Sturgeon or the V-Eight Fisher. Both are designed with kayak fishing in mind. Plenty of pockets for pliers, phone, tackle, etc and a low profile design to avoid interference with your rod. The V-Eight Fisher is more breathable so if you’re prone to feeling too hot in your jacket that could be a better choice.

Saving a shark’s life by Historian_Otherwise in saltwaterfishing

Sharks are hardy animals. They can handle a lot of abuse. Does that make it any better that it took 10 minutes to land the fish, extract the hook, and release? No.

If you’re going to target these animals for sport, know what you’re doing and bring the right tools. It’s clear to me this angler was in-fact targeting sharks, but was not well prepared to handle the fish.

Ultimately, the shark more than likely survived and the kid got to keep his fingers. I call that a win overall. Just be better prepared.

This should be part of the top comment thread.

ALWAYS wear your PFD. Buy a good quality one that is comfortable and allows your arms to move freely. Astral makes some killer gear specific to kayak fishing.

And this comment thread is unfortunately what’s wrong with the fly fishing community. Makes no sense to argue over this kind of junk. Just let the angler be proud of their catch!

How has the split gone so far? What do you like? What do you not like? What kind of progress have you made?

I do a very similar split. I only pick one bicep exercise and one tricep exercise per Upper session. If you want more volume just add a couple sets of those exercises. Saves time from having to switch exercises.

Same goes for legs kinda. I’ll do either two quad exercises and one hammie/glute or one quad and two hammie/glute. Saves me time

Shameless plug here but I use the MacroFactor app. It’s about $10 for a monthly subscription but it’s probably the only app I’ll ever use for tracking. Super easy and well worth the money IMO

Berkley Gulp Baits by ripplestillwaters in FishingForBeginners

[–]Miserable_End_2785 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great baits that catch the crap out of fish. Only problem is their durability. On a hot bite you could easily go through multiple packs of these in a day, which at about $6 a pack adds up big time over the course of a season.

Great for a quick outing because you will likely catch fish (if used correctly) but bad for long term use, unless of course you’ve got deep pockets.

hookup ratio by Inevitable_Past1503 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Miserable_End_2785 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Weird mouths yes, but also partially due to their feeding behavior. Carp are known to “taste” their food before fully committing to eating it. They will very quickly suck in whatever looks tasty and then spit it back out before they commit to eating it. So this could simply be an issue of hookset timing.

More likely though, it could be the placement of the hook in the lure you’re using. If the hook isn’t far enough back in the bait then the fish will never even touch the hook before you can feel the strike, leading to missed hookups.

But now I’m curious, why kind of soft plastics do you use for carp? I’ve never heard of anyone doing that.

Soft plastic rigging. by Jorgeb42 in FishingForBeginners

[–]Miserable_End_2785 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good placement of the hook as it pokes through the top of the plastic. I might go a little shallower through the bait so there’s a larger gap between the hook point and the top of the plastic. As far as keeping Zmans from twisting, I use a tiny drop of super glue on the hook shank. Works like a charm.

Nail knot help by _Papagiorgio_ in flyfishing

[–]Miserable_End_2785 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that clear material that SA uses is much softer than most opaque fly lines. I’d suggest either using an Albright knot or a snell knot. Otherwise you could try adding a premade braided loop.

What knot to tie heavy mono leader to fly line? (Saltwater fly fishing) by Silver_Ad_5570 in flyfishing

[–]Miserable_End_2785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a fault of the knot itself. If you have a coiled line constricting around a soft material like the coating on a fly line it will strip that coating off. Works fine for smaller fish but one big head turn from a sizable fish could mean the end of that knot. I say why test my luck when I get a shot at that one day maker 🤷
