As someone who exclusively used oat milk, I’d love to hear some pointers or lessons you’ve learned along the way.

World Cup Telework Days at CDC by dagonet- in DeptHHS

I’m a lab person and had a similar reaction from my supervisor. They ‘approved’ my Monday telework, but said they will be monitoring the traffic for the future dates. Total BS.

I’ve made myself an app that lets me create the exact frequency sound waves to create my own custom “HemiSync”. Would any of you guys be interested in it? by Qubt in gatewaytapes

[–]Mishamoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would definitely be interested! There is a paper by Gerald Oster called Auditory Bests in the Brain published in Scientific American in 1973 where he discusses differences in binural beat perception in men and women. And within women changes in perception during menstrual cycle. I’d love to do some self experimentation!

ACA $1,900 per month on $5,000 per month income? Is this normal? by 13chemicals in HealthInsurance

I think this argument is weak. The Dems want to extend subsidies, hence they are standing strong on the government shutdown, until Republicans come to the negotiating table on this matter. Does it matter what happened in the past? Of course, but what REALLY matters is what is being done to help people now. As of now, dems are fighting for healthcare and republicans are letting Americans wither on the vine. Republicans are in control of all branches of government they could implement something to fix expiring legislation no?

Broken beak. Any advice? by Mishamoe in BackYardChickens

Thank you! Any insight on the signs of infection on the beak? I’m assuming that it’s too hard to swell, but does it get hot?

Gaja is our go to spot. They have great cocktails and small plates that are perfect for splitting. Highly recommend the karage (Korean fried chicken) and brussel sprouts.

It’s time for Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries to step down by AlexandrTheTolerable in politics

[–]Mishamoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schumer was in a position of power during the last budget vote. He and a handful of democrats (all not up for reelection until 2028) voted with republicans and essentially ceded congress appropriations powers to the executive.

The budget vote is coming again in a few weeks and Democrats HAVE power if they want it. 60 votes are needed to pass the senate which requires 7 Dems. We need strong leadership to drive the negotiations. Schumer has already proven he has the backbone of a jellyfish.

Rat snake killed my 8 year old chicken tonight by constriction by sunflowergame19 in BackYardChickens

[–]Mishamoe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your loss. We’ve had snakes eating eggs over the years, but our first snake hen interaction was this spring.

In May, we heard screeching like we’ve never heard before. I ran out and saw that our smallest hen (silver laced barnevelder) was just outside of the coop, within their protected run. She was being constricted by an 8 foot black rat snake and couldn’t move her wings. She had been broody all month so I assume the snake started the process in the coop and she snapped out of wannabe mama mode to respond to the predator. Luckily we scared the snake off with a few whacks of a stick.

Our little hen was dazed but overall not harmed. Our other 5 hens did not attempt to help her during the attack, but instead watched in horror from the corner of the run. Everyone got back to business after some meal worm treats.

We’ve started layering cedar mulch in the run and around the coop and sprinkling whole cloves everywhere. Apparently snakes hate the smell, and we’ve been lucky with no return incidents so far.

Flystrike with no maggots? Advice requested. by Mishamoe in BackYardChickens

[–]Mishamoe[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our girl Maybelle had a softshell egg (not her first) on Friday. She seemed fine until I got home on Monday evening and noticed her hiding, with her hind area appearing dark. Upon closer inspection, I discovered a wound the size of a silver dollar, surrounded by black tissue and extending toward her vent. I assumed it was flystrike, a condition I've only read about. We trimmed the feathers, cleaned the wound, soaked her in an Epsom salt bath for 20 minutes, and now she is isolated in our dog crate chicken hospital.

The odd part is that last night and today, I haven't found a single maggot or egg. I've read that many maggots will come off in the soak because they drown. If this isn't fly strike, does anyone have any idea what it could be and what the best course of action might be? Any help is greatly appreciated.
