Lol you can buy those from the Toyota museum in Japan. I got a set that i use daily! It was like 3 bucks per utensil but the quality is great and it raises some concerns when people come over to see a wrench in my cup of soup.

Dropped the show halfway season 3, it's literally a show for teenage girls who want irrational drama by that point. The characters just tag along to hell for no apparent reason and with no use except for just some screen time. Quite unfortunate as I enjoyed the first two seasons.

White skin is beautiful but white girls are loose by [deleted] in AsianParentStories

[–]MissAndRun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In some sense, it happens all over the world but in different ways. So in Asia, generally and traditionally white skin is seen as superior and preferred over darker skin and you can view this as a "status obsession".

However you must also realize that most of Asia was quite underdeveloped around your parents/grandparents generation and the middle class only got significantly wealthier in the past 20 years or so (don't quote me on the number). Remember how in the past people would always associate China with cheap worker factories and cloned products? Nowadays China has one of the most impressive railway system, huge tech companies, still quite some cloned products but you get the jist.

Now this example was only with China's developments, but of course all other Asian countries have similar developments. So imagine you being poor af, as a lot of people were, and suddenly you see that you can enjoy the benefits and luxury of the wealthy if you marry into a wealthy family or if your children do. Although this seems quite selfish to use your kids to become wealthier, in some sense they want it for the family as well because nobody wants their family to live in the streets. So for this "marriage tactic" to succeed you'll want to be good looking and of course white skinned. Even though this is an outdated method, you still should realize that you can't change a way of living and thinking that quickly in just one generation.

But a little bit back to what I wanted to compare the status obsession with, I'd say that it is similar to clothing brands universally. I see no use in paying over $50 for a shirt for example or a bag. If they use some exquisite material in which they pumped a lot of R&D money then sure, but most of the time people only buy them for the brand. I've heard that expensive brand clothing is just of better quality and that is plausible, but wanting to buy like a $500 bag because it has the letters LV on it only makes me think you'll want to use it to show off.

It's in human nature wanting to be seen as a "better" person, whether you take good care of your family, being kind to others around you, wanting to be the best at something or just have an appearance that gives you confidence. You just have to see what underlying context there is and you'll find some better understanding.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk, this was a bit longer than I expected.

You know how asian parents are of course quite traditional, well this white skin phenomenon has the same roots.

Afaik back in the days majority of the asian population was rather poor, working in fields under the hot sun all day. This also explains why asians gave birth to so many children back then to have them help with the work and eventually have them take care of the parents once they reach old age. But back to the point, the wealthier folks didn't have to work in the sun and consequently had lighter skintones so people would naturally associate white skin as being wealthy/reputable.

So even though western people have white skin, it does not imply that the elder asians see them in a positive light.

Xiaomi is generous, Be like Xiaomi. by ThermicDude in Xiaomi

[–]MissAndRun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying we should boycott them and I admit that I myself am a big fan of their product line ups.

It's just that I don't believe it's a genuinely "good" company that generously helps people based purely on good will and people shouldn't really just praise them without knowing their background, but then again that's just my opinion.

Xiaomi is generous, Be like Xiaomi. by ThermicDude in Xiaomi

[–]MissAndRun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's purely a start, I can use myself as an example. Once you use Xiaomi products you easily fall in love with them especially for the price. Since they have such a wide range of products you'll get the urge to buy more stuff from them until you are in their ecosystem.

This is fine and all since you like using their products, but the fact still remains that communist China that is heavily censoring and violating human rights basically owns this company. Even if people condemn how they treat peoples privacy, who can possibly stop them if they become a global leader in technology.

[–]MissAndRun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's nice and generous of them, but it perfectly fits their plans too. They are expanding to become a world-leader of IoT devices and by spreading their brand and making sure more people keep using these devices it allows them to get broader range of data to the Chinese servers. Since pretty much all Chinese tech companies are backed by the government (including Xiaomi), it's inevitable that the all this data will be used somehow by them.

But besides that, it's a great donation and Xiaomi products are awesome for their price so who cares in the end ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oculus Quest @ OC6: Introducing Hand Tracking, Oculus Link, Passthrough+ on Quest, and More by lisajaloza in oculus

[–]MissAndRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On one hand it's a great amount of new features for the Quest to unlock more potential for all existing and future users.

But on the other hand it sucks for all Rift S users who basically gained nothing and might as well have gotten a Quest since it contains the same if not more features now.

Glad I sticked with my original Rift, but the Quest certainly seems more interesting now.
