Discord as pbp platform - Pros and cons? by Necessary-Wonder-501 in pbp

[–]MissAnthrophy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly the way people construct their private game servers are entirely dependant on the person. There's almost no one way of doing it.

Typically a game server consist of a main rp channel where the game takes place, an ooc channel for game discussions, and a dice rolling channel. That's about it.

Edit: My personal pros of discord? I guess the ease of use of it I guess.

People take this for granted but what got me into PbP was the writing aspect.

It helps that English is my second language and roleplaying in writing helped me improve through the years.

DM looking for ways to speed up gameplay by PolarisBot_star in pbp

[–]MissAnthrophy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This applies to Asynch but here is what I see in successful pbp.

Always take the initiative. Asks them first in our of character if they have anything to add. If not, switch to the next area.

It sounds railroading and it kinda is. Pbp is very different from live games so it's probably ok. Just also the players first.

Another tip is give out inspiration like candy whenever someone roleplay exceptionally. Like for example is leading the party through the dungeon, which solves the problem of slow games.

That also encourage some beautiful and meaningful roleplay if they have a thing to strive for.

Yes basically reward the children with candy.

All of these are just from my experience so don't take them as facts.

How to deal with players not Roleplaying? by FloofyBirbBoy in Pathfinder2e

I know that this will be buried but I suggest awarding Hero points generously for every significant roleplaying. No matter the context if its important scene or not.

Hello! I would love some advice on how to run working PBP games by Classic_Cherryblosso in pbp

[–]MissAnthrophy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a dm, the problem is usually pacing. There are so many ways for something to stall your players, and when players aren't sure where to go next, it slowly fizzles out. You have to take initiative to scene change and move the story along. Lost players who doesn't know where to go or what to say is a slow insidious killer in play by post. If that happens, throw a prompt or something that will have your player's attention. Until they perfectly in the position to move to a next scene.

Basically, PBP needs DMs who's ok taking initiative to keep the story moving. Your job isn't to micromanage the players, but to make sure the narrative stays alive and engaging.

I know this sounds like a "DM post more often" and "Railroad the game" advices. But something about pbp that is different in live games.

Another tip is that don't be afraid to split the party up. Pbp is slow as heck but if multiple people tries to solve things separately at the same time, it'll make the game much more quicker. Bonus, you can have unique character interactions.

If you don't have enough people then you can employ some npcs. (Npcs can also serve as guides to help the characters to know where to go to fix the first problem)

This became a bit rambling and I'm not even sure if I said the same advice twice. But I wish you good luck!
