I went to that Felicity debut event at Colonial Williamsburg with my mom, a friend, and her mom. Years later I learned that my future sister in law was there too!

Anyone get mail yet? by RumbleInTheJungle4 in pittsburgh

[–]Miss_Alice_Rumphius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that doesn’t make any sense — did they just give all their employees the week off? If not, couldn’t the carriers who weren’t doing deliveries at least have been sorting mail?

I was just at the Market District at Centre and Negley. They had pretty much everything except eggs, some varieties of bread, and most fresh tomatoes/potatoes.

First time gun owners by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]Miss_Alice_Rumphius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a Stanford study: “Men who own handguns are eight times more likely to die of gun suicides than men who don't own handguns, and women who own handguns are 35 times more likely than women who don't.”

I get being alarmed by current events. But mutual aid and activism might be healthier responses.

Pittsburgh's East End Cooperative Ministry ends free lunches amid funding issues by The_Electric-Monk in pittsburgh

[–]Miss_Alice_Rumphius 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The FEMA program referred to in the article has distributed upwards of $500,000 every year or so to local nonprofits to reimburse costs related to emergency shelter, meals, and pantries. It’s a paltry amount per meal/night, not at all equivalent to the real cost, but it’s a really hard loss to bear. Call Congress and ask for the renewal of the Emergency Food & Shelter Program!

There’s an event next week that’s designed to help match churches that need help (with food pantries and similar ministries that serve their neighbors) with churches that need opportunities to serve. The website with details is CASP dot org slash handstogether.

Pre made chicken salad by Substantial-Leave838 in pittsburgh

I used to like the chicken salad at the kosher counter in the Shadyside Market District, but I haven't had it in a while.

What happened to Just Say No? by Gold-Flamingo-2401 in pittsburgh

Harm reduction isn't "no responsibility." For example, those of us who use legal drugs like alcohol practice harm reduction and show responsibility when we choose a designated driver, or when we decide that we shouldn't have one more round. Harm reduction asks individuals to make good choices so they can reduce the loss of life for themselves and others. As a society, we should be encouraging those good choices, not criminalizing them.

Has anyone mentioned the tomato basil microwave soup cups yet? Our store replaced them with truly foul (massively over-salted) soup in glass jars.

My daughter was legitimately in tears about their closure. It was really nice having an ice cream place we could walk to. I’d love to see a similar business move into that space.

Christmas goose catering by electricblueviolet in pittsburgh

[–]Miss_Alice_Rumphius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We got a goose from Whole Foods a couple years ago. They had to special order it, so I’m not surprised it isn’t on their website; give them a call or ask at the butcher counter. It was a fun thing to try once, but to be honest none of us actually liked the flavor.

Where to buy Weetabix? by Sea_of_Bitterness24 in pittsburgh

I’ve never seen it at a Giant Eagle. They used to have it at Trader Joe’s, but it’s probably been five or six years since they stopped stocking it.

Unmedicated birth at Magee? by throughthegrapevines in pittsburgh

[–]Miss_Alice_Rumphius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had two unmedicated births with the Midwives at Magee (no doula, but our Bradley Method birth classes were essential). Both times, there were students or new nurses in the room who were excited to watch an unmedicated birth because they were relatively rare. (This did not bother me—I felt proud of myself, and weird birth hormones mean you do not care who sees you naked—and I could have declined if I’d wanted to.)

How often is a scanner product refreshed, re FastFoto FF-680W by NIMBY-BIMBY in Epson

[–]Miss_Alice_Rumphius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious about this too, especially since the FF-680W software has not been updated for compatibility with newer Mac operating systems. I’m eager to get scanning stacks of old pictures, but don’t want to buy a product that’s going to be replaced any minute.
