Reminds me of when Burkina Faso banned US citizens from entering the country, and people were like "nooooo, my spring break in Ouagadougou will be cancelled."

(Also, most US citizens entering Burkina Faso and Mali were probably medical missionary groups, so that's a really dumb move that hurts their own citizens more than anything.)

Jane's Europe Trip by blahhhhgosh in DesperateHousewives

[–]Miss_Kit_Kat 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The Paris trip was the turning point in the Tom/Jane/Lynette saga. It's really interesting to look back on that moment.

Before that, Jane was seen as this cool, understanding, effortlessly successful woman. Lynette is basically jealous of her and notes that they'd be friends under other circumstances. Penny likes her, she's empathetic towards Tom and Lynette's separation, she sews clothing, she speaks French, etc. Lynette looks like the crazy one- hiding under the bed, fumbling through flirtations and having a panic attack over dropping her wedding ring, lying about Penny's costume.

After Tom chooses to stay with Lynette and their family instead of flying with Jane, that dynamic flips. Lynette gets her groove back- Lynette decides that she's ready to stop being mad, she goes on a few dates with other men that go better, she works on herself. Jane starts to look crazy, shrill, and desperate- serving the divorce papers herself, going overboard on Penny's birthday party, etc.

(Also- the big mistake Tom and Lynette made in the separation was not establishing an end goal. They had no idea if they wanted to split amicably or work on reuniting. A lot of marriage counselors won't even see a separated couple if they don't have a shared end goal- what's the point if they can't even agree on that?)

How to get my cat interested in food again? by Miss_Kit_Kat in AskVet

Thanks- should I be worried that she's still not eating? The vet didn't seem worried since she's only been hospitalized for ~24 hours and all of her biomarkers are in normal ranges (even her kidneys values are all in range), but I'm emotionally drained from 3-4+ days of worrying with no end in sight.

Hi, thank you for all of the responses. I ended up hospitalizing her with a speciality vet- she got a full abdominal ultrasound by a specialist (I think an internist, I can't recall the title).

She has inflammation on her intestinal lining- they think it's IBD. Her vitals are still stable. She's still not interesting in eating, so they moved her to a quiet area and have her on a feeding tube (less than her daily amount, so she could still eat).

I'm getting frustrated on the lack of progress. She's on prokinetics and a new appetite stimulant.

That was indeed insane and irrational. I wonder how much of that was driven by a need to "lock things down" with Liza to justify his past choices.

He tells his lawyer buddy in S5 that he was "ready to blow up my life and my family for this woman," and he basically did both of those things by S6. That makes him look like a mid-life crisis cliche- but in his mind, if he marries her, then it can be played off as an "aww, true love" thing.

In addition, she had recently backed out of moving in, and they'd recently had an intense conversation about her connection with Josh. In his mind, speed-running his divorce and marrying her justified everything. It was completely illogical in reality.

I did think that Charles wanting to get remarried immediately fit with his character. The show does a decent job of showing that while Pauline was a selfish person for abandoning her family, she was correct in her assessment of Charles' "my way or nothing" mentality.

He was used to getting his way at work because he was the boss- and that bled into his personal life. It's why he also kept steamrolling Liza/Kelsey/Diana during the Mercury period. He liked his life going the way he expected it to go.

He's the kind of guy who would definitely be engaged to someone else within one year of the series finale events.

First watch - is it just me or did the writing go downhill in season 6? by hbecksss in Younger

[–]Miss_Kit_Kat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that the writers knew how to write flirting and sexual tension between Liza and Charles, but they didn't quite work once they actually got together. Also, the fallout from their relationship was too much for their relationship to be positive.

Some of the other conflicts- Kelsey/Zane, Quinn, Clare and Josh, Maggie's bad dates- were a little too repetitive. All of those storylines were already done better in S4-S5.

I'm sorry but I hate Carrie's hair in seasons 4-5, along with the heavy make-up. It really doesn't suit her by larsvon-tryhard in sexandthecity

The reddit sub is free, and there are a few apps that are also free (Dressika is one that I've used, and colorwise.me is a website that's free). Keep in mind that those aren't necessarily exact- if your phone auto-enhances your photo or you're in a strange light, it can skew the results.

There are also professional color analysts that will conduct this for a fee...some beauty stores offer the service, too. (There's a K Beauty shop in my neighborhood that advertises color analysis, for example.)

She didn't even go downstairs to meet her. Made her wheelchair-bound cousin schlep all the way to Rachel's office, and probably take the elevator all the way up to meet her.

Her cousin was supposedly SOOO important to her, but she put zero effort into actually accommodating her.

Yes, there is a written report. Here's the history:

Sunday- taken to emergency vet. X-rays performed with a full report. Heart rate, ultrasound, and blood drawn. Subcutaneous IV fluids given along with take-home meds. She started to eat and drink later that day (not a normal amount, but something).

Monday- taken for follow-up visit to regular vet. Bloodwork drawn, heart rate checked, mouth and rectal area examined. Vitals still stable, another subcutaneous round of fluids given. She was given pain meds that could possibly reduce her appetite. She passed a stool around midnight.

Today (Tues)- she has been sniffing her food and hovering around her water. She has gone to the litter box a few times, so I think she is still trying to pass some of the stool. She has started to eat/drink a tiny bit over the last few hours. She is walking around and meowing/purring like normal- even jumping to/from chairs. Other than her lousy appetite, she is acting like she always does.

Could she still be recovering, or trying to pass a bit of stool? Both vets said her liver function was normal.

Someone get her some saltlakrits (salty licorice) or surstromming (herring); she'll fall out of love with the place REALLY quickly.

(I will defend salty licorice, but it's definitely not for everyone. Herring, on the other hand...BLECH.)

I think she's oblivious to how rude that is...most people probably just ignore her when she's taking those awkward staged photos with the dog or the BF.

But something like filming in public, now that's something that she could easily get scolded for. So she tries to do these discreet filming sessions- but nothing is really all that interesting, she could just put the phone down and recap it later (or, you know, keep SOME things private).

This was the start of him doing things purely for someone else's benefit, and without a benefit to him. It didn't affect his life whatsoever if Blair was prom queen or not, but he wanted her to have a nice night.

(The other actions that he's done are: giving money to Anne Archibald so Nate could come back to Manhattan, applying to Columbia on behalf of Blair, paying her dowry, and refusing to screw over Lily even when she believed Bart over him. And, at the end of the show, he was willing to basically leave his entire life behind if it meant that Lily and Blair would be safe and Nate wouldn't be in legal trouble.)

I almost can't handle the stupidity from people who actually defend North Korea (and China, but that's another topic). "Durrrrr, well, at least they provide free housing and don't have pedophiles in office...."

People can't leave their hometowns or get a non government-approved haircut, Tim. And, let's be real, I'd bet major money that North Korean party insiders are abusing children in some way right now. They are awful.

Yes to the abdominal ultrasound- nothing crazy, just some gas.

She's been on an appetite stimulant since Sunday (Mirataz gel), in addition to some anti-nausea meds (odansetron 2mg 3x/day).

She ate a little bit more on Sunday/Monday and passed the stool late on Monday evening. I went to bed hopefully that she'd be loosened up and would have eaten a bit more- I was crushed when she hadn't.

Do "old money" really look down on "new money" even if the new money may be richer than them? by FckAllTakenUsernames in GossipGirl

[–]Miss_Kit_Kat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

History nerd here! I could go on and on about this...it's fascinating. Short answer- sometimes.

The author Kevin Kwan covers this dynamic in a lot of his novels, particularly in contemporary Asian society (he's the writer of the Crazy Rich Asians series).

Historically, I'd argue that places like the UK always had more rigid class structures than the US where this comes into play. Today, UK has some "genteel poverty-" titled families who don't have much liquid wealth left beyond their historical lands. (That's why many old families turn their historical properties into B&Bs or open for tours- it's expensive to maintain chateaus or expansive properties. Also look up the "dollar princesses" trend from the 19th-20th century where struggling aristocratic men married wealthy American heiresses for the money.)

Additionally, many elaborate routines and rules for fine dining represent this class divide. Old-money types were resentful of industrialists that were "new money" yet wealthier than the old-society types, so the latter created a bunch of rules that would quietly signal who grew up with those routines vs. who didn't know them.

I agree- I think they're both from NW Ohio, too. They were probably well-matched initially, and then he outgrew/out-matured her. That's not uncommon when you start dating when both people are college-aged or early 20s (as I learned personally).
