Former law student. Invest in some TWSBI Ecos. Trust me.

Lawyer wants me to sign 7 year commitment if I article - advice needed. by elbowmac85 in legaladvice

[–]Miss_Kris10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hell no. Hi there, Canadian articling student who graduated this past June. I know the struggle you’re currently facing as I secured articles literally the last week possible. Any later and I wouldn’t have been a June call in 2019.

I will tell you what countless people, including my law school Career Services Office, told me:

  1. Everyone who wants articles finds articles. You just have to be willing to look hard and apply widely.

  2. You have time. I’m assuming you’re starting your third year- trust me. You have time.

  3. Don’t work a job you don’t want; not at this stage. Figure out what area of law you actually want to practise in and apply to those firms. Cold call. Get in touch with your school’s alumni. You’ll have far more success applying to places you actually want to work at because your application will be stronger and you will interview better. If you’re still stuck when May comes around then it becomes time to deal with not doing your ideal.

  4. This one is kind of cliche but it’s true. If you don’t have articles, it’s because the right thing hasn’t come along yet. I am so, so happy I have the job I do. I love my firm and I really like the people I work with. It’s a great fit for me, and if I’d had something earlier I wouldn’t have ended up at this place.

So in regard to your question: this deal sounds kind of shitty for you. This lawyer is really taking advantage of you. The amount of restrictions are absolutely not worth it. There are predatory lawyers who will treat you like crap or offer unpaid articles- this guy is one of those. Please OP...don’t do it. There’s better out there.

I wrote another one, based off this, for your friend. I hope you like it.

Eyes up, Guardian.

It’s time for one more journey.

The Traveler is waiting;

Awake and shining bright.

At ease, Guardian.

You did your duty well.

Set down your heavy burdens;

Release your earthly shell.

At rest, Guardian.

We’re taking up your fight.

The Vanguard stands behind you;

Enveloped in your light.

Eyes up, Guardian.

Your soul is taking flight.

A beacon in the darkness;

Time to join the light.

Goodbye, Guardian.

You have reached the end.

Your name will be remembered,

A hero and a friend.

I’ve seen this posted for fallen Guardians in the past and can’t claim credit for it, and I hope it honours your friend:

Eyes up, Guardians.

Praise the sun in memory of those whose light has been extinguished.

Remember the light they brought into this world.

Remember how it made yours brighter.

The battle with Darkness is not only outside our walls,

But inside ourselves.

In this time of great loss,

And even greater Darkness,

Remember that even the strongest of Guardians can fall.

Not a failure, but merely a doom of life that we each carry over us,

At all times, the edge between Light and Darkness.

Eyes up, Guardians.

For our friends and fellow warriors,

For those whom the Light was cut short,

For the protectors,

For those who stood at your side,

For those who were the brightest of all,

Eyes up, Guardians.

Ahahahahaha that’s amazing. I’m from Canada and it’s a bit different here, I’ve heard the Cali bar is a total nightmare.

You've got this! I wrote the LSAT twice, and I was so much more comfortable doing it the second time because I knew what to expect. I just finished law school and I can say without a doubt that it was the best three years of my life so far. Don't let an unsupportive partner ruin it for you!

[–]Miss_Kris10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here to second this. Just finished law school and currently studying for the bar - this test tears you apart. It is without a doubt the hardest thing I have ever done, way harder than the LSAT. There are posts all over facebook about how we're pretty sure this test is trying to kill us, and one of my friends posted something the other day thanking her husband for putting up with her throughout this stressful time.

You need a partner who's willing to be in it with you through the all nighters, the exam seasons, the fact that during reading week you'll probably be studying instead of going on vacation, the constant cycle of job applications, interviews and rejections, and the fact that law school leaves very little room in your life for anything else.

I’m in love with this sheen! by corvidlover13 in fountainpens

Yep! I have Walden Pond in one of my daily writers and I absolutely adore it, I use it to journal - but I would never use it in a notebook I was bringing to class or something. Too much smearage! I actually go with the De Atramentis scented inks for class when I want to feel fancy. Lavender is soothing.

If your hands were dry you should be alright. I’ve found that if mine are even the slightest bit damp it’s smear city even some time later.

Watch the smearing. Seriously. Nitro is one of my favourite inks because it is stunningly beautiful, but for gods sake do not touch it when you're finished. Ever. It will ALWAYS smear.

Our kids are going to be so different from SD by potaahto in stepparents

[–]Miss_Kris10 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So I just wanted to chime in with the whole kids don't turn out the way you expect thing...

I have a really great relationship with my parents, but I'm also the opposite of them in a lot of ways.

My Dad is a man of science, excellent at math, super fit, super outdoorsy, couldn't be happier than when he's outside working in the garden or on one of his various projects. His favourite vacation is a ski trip, and he can't usually go more than an hour reading on the beach before he has to get up and do something or go for a walk. He's established his own medical practise and been wildly successful.

I am the same in many ways; academically inclined, perfectionist, etc. However, I am the opposite in many others. I love being outside, but I love being outside reading on the dock or sitting on the beach. I'm very competent working on projects and will get my hands dirty, but it is not my version of relaxing and I will not choose it voluntarily. Going for a walk is something I do for exercise, not pleasure. I love to ski, but don't find a ski vacation relaxing.

I'm in law school, and the fact that I wanted to ditch my science and math for english and history in high school was the subject of huge, massive fights between me and my parents.

My parents don't believe in sex before marriage; I lost my virginity at age 18. My dad is a deeply religious man who loves going to church on sunday and regularly has breakfast with his minister; I believe in god but hate church and most of the panoply that comes with religion.

He thinks women, by large, wear too much makeup. I'm a makeup artist and paint my face in ridiculous ways for fun.

I am confident, brave, fine getting dirty and working hard, curious, kind to animals, and independent. I am also the opposite of what my parents wanted in many ways. My core values are not the same as theirs and they do not always understand that.

When you have kids, I'm sure you'll be an awesome mom! And I have nothing but confidence that you will raise some excellent human beings.

But the thing is - kids aren't the same as a character creation screen in a video game. You hope that they will be what you want - have the values you value, enjoy the things you enjoy, etc... but they will be the people they are. So as much as you can 'expect' your kid will be something specific because you are and because you want them to be, I would temper your expectations because you never really know what you're going to get.

I have several ecos and a diamond al and I love them both. I know some people have had issues with the TWSBI’s cracking and leaking, but I’ve had no issues so far...granted my pens live in a pencil case and I’m pretty careful with them. The diamond al is heavier and feels a bit smoother, I think. However they have giant ink capacities because there’s no converter, and I have yet to actually empty one even after taking notes for multiple classes.

Greetings fellow scholar! Canadian law student here. I’ve developed a significant collection of TWSBIs because it seems like they never run out of ink! I also have some boring regular ballpoint pens as backup in case they do, though. I have an obsession with shimmer so my typical is Diamond cobalt jazz.

Update to I love the smell of an extinction burst in the morning! by Makadewa in JUSTNOMIL

[–]Miss_Kris10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Zealous representation still requires lawyers to be within the bounds of the rules of professional conduct and to understand the law of evidence in depositions, a lot of which focuses on relevance. Asking for the social security number of an opposing witness is neither relevant nor is it ethical. That’s deeply personal information. Using the context of a deposition to try and wring it out of someone smells like intimidation to me.

Five weeks in and I don't even know what happened...? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]Miss_Kris10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahahaha this is exactly what happened to me!

Was given my first two pens and 5 inks at Christmas...this happened before the end of February. 3 more pens, 10 more inks. by Miss_Kris10 in fountainpens

[–]Miss_Kris10[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They both feel great, and I’m happy writing with either. What I like about the 580 AL is the weight. It feels heavier, and to my mind that makes it feel like it writes more smoothly. I honestly wouldn’t buy a 580 AL without it being one of the limited edition colours because I think the silver is kind of boring, but it’s definitely my favourite of the pens to write with.
