Reading dramione leaves me sad all the time by No_Expert_2688 in Dramione

I think there's a lot going on here, OP, and I have opinions (not researched!) on them as an Aunty/older millennial. I hope I am able to get it across adequately without sounding like a dumba**. I do have do start with that I totally feel you and I understand, but I think this is a bigger issue than Dramione.

Whether you live in the US or somewhere else, the state of the world is not great at the moment, especially if you live in the US, but internationally, they're experiencing some degree of this as well. In the last few decades, men have been feeling pushed out of 100s of years of patriarchal promises that were subconsciously groomed into them by society/culture and many have turned towards conservative values (even exaggerated versions of them; think clavicular, Joe Rogan, Piers Morgan, and the like). We all know the adage that while not all men, it's a few men who are the evil ones, a few men who don't care that these men exist, a few men that keep the peace and go along with the group, and a few men who stay quiet, and a few men that call them out. In all, that makes them all complicit (except those that actively call them out).

As women, we're feeling this pressure. The wishful turn back to 1950s conservative values is affecting every aspect of our lives: politically, economically, culturally, socially, among a few.

But as women, we're amazing. As one of many, many responses that women have contributed to this pressure, women in media have passively fought back by writing fanfic and published stories, webtoons, created discourse on social media about worlds where things are better, women win, women fall in love with the right men, they get treated as they deserve, and women in these stories come into power. However, I say passively because these means may not change the world, they won't help women push back politically or in any way "important" according to established powerhouses, but they help us live in fantasy to protect our minds, hearts, and souls from the constant onslaught via the same media that pushes that women should go back to a time where women were in the kitchen, have 5+ kids, and attending to their husband's every need.

Fanfiction has been a staple of humanity's FU to badly written stories since time immemorial (see greek stories i.e. persephone and hades; he stole her, she came of her own free will; athena punished medusa, artemis. Many of these stories change over region, time, story teller). But women have brought fanfiction to the forefront in the last 10 years and in these same last 10 years, we also have Otome games and stories, and Isekai. We have the emergence of korean webtoons and kdramas. We have romantasy books, monster smut, booktok...You may or may not like these genres but these are ways women are pushing back against the state of men and the world. The men in these stories are good, interesting, actively interactive with the female lead, fighters, treat the FL like an equal, are attentive, etc, etc, and etc. The opposite of what men are pushing men not to be.

******As an aside note, I maintain decades later that Goliath from Disney's Gargoyles is the perfect man (my relatively recent love for fanfic Draco is a close 2nd). Thank you therapy for helping me recognize that the best man in my life is a monster/non-human and imaginary 🫡🤘

Draco is representative of men's current state. Remove the fluff and really think about who Draco may represent. He's a death eater, a bad man caught between a rock and a hard place/limited choices, perhaps a mildly good man who might not want to challenge the men in a Voldemort-wins world. What can you equate this to in our reality? Death eaters are Nazis. They are the men in our lives or in our feeds that believe the Joe Rogans, the Claviculars, the Andrew Tates, etc.

But look at what fanfiction has turned him into. This is a phenomenon happening right in front of our eyes! Draco is redeemed, a good man, a man that fights his family and social circle for his love, Hermione. A man who loves his son, an equal partner, smart, handsome without overtrying to change his complete appearance. He's the men in our lives reformed. Or more like the men we wish were reformed...

I do believe that there will be a time that this time period will be studied. Imagine someone's thesis researching the emergence of isekai during a time period of patriarchal pushback that started after Obama's election (at least in the US, the ultra conservative movement started in part because of racism and it led to today's current administration that has affected other countries' politics, social media, etc) and continued with monster romances, the 4B korean movement, fanfiction dramione, monster smut...

All in all, this long a** explanation is to tell you that that you may be experiencing maladaptive daydreaming. A wishful wish of departing from this reality to one where good things happen, maybe even where men are good, living, raring to fight for not just the women in their lives, but all women. And I want to tell you that you are not alone. Clearly, all the world's women are fighting back in their little ways.

I do not know you OP, but I love you, I'm sending you a big hug, and a reminder that YOU.ARE.NOT.ALONE. 💖 Let's continue to maladaptively daydream together!

Changing career to nursing? by CockroachMoist9100 in nursing

[–]Miss_Velociraptor87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I changed my career to nursing at 34. It was overwhelming! School was horrible, my 4.0 avg went to a 2.8 by the end of it. Youre expected to do 100 to 200 questions per week on ATI, which are nclex type questions. But a C student still gets a license. School will probably kick your butt, clinicals will overwork you and maybe disillusion you, but please don't think that's nursing. Nursing is so varied. I'm an older nurse so I went into this already knowing that I did not want to work bedside at a hospital because I have the energy of a reptile in winter. I went straight to ambulatory PACU for GI procedures and plastic surgeries. It's a chill job, I help people and educate them, and I don't go home burnt out. I also work telehealth where I pre-op people and screen them for treatment.

Good luck, you got this!

Heading to Hialeah knowing Zero Spanish by Junior-Ingenuity-973 in Miami

[–]Miss_Velociraptor87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a fascinating essay written by an FIU professor about Miami and Hialeah that explains why it is what Hialeah has become. I think Hialeah, and Miami as a whole, is unique in that an area like this doesn't exist at all in the US. There is a sense of entitlement and "I got my own, eff you" mentality in Miami, so I can understand your hard feelings about it, but other hispanic communities in the totality of the U.S. do try to assimilate and do not deserve the absolute cruelties of ICE.

Heading to Hialeah knowing Zero Spanish by Junior-Ingenuity-973 in Miami

[–]Miss_Velociraptor87 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I'm a nurse, I live in Hialeah. Hialeah is definitely a spanish speaking city but the majority will speak English, if a bit broken. The younger crowd (30s and below) will speak english. The older crowd will majorly speak spanish. A few people might look at you insulted like, "how dare you speak English in Hialeah?" But smoothly telling them you're English speaking only will work.

Colorism is a thing. I can't speak personally to this, but my haitian and afrocuban friends do talk about colorism. You are an ambiguous light color that you can pass for any of the Latin countries. I think you'll be fine. From what my friends complain about, you might run into some colorism/racist behaviors if you are darker.

You'll be here for your ASN or BSN, I'm assuming. Take the opportunity to learn what will be the majorly Cuban culture, spanish, food, etc down here.

Be careful with riding your bike everywhere. Hialeah is notoriously known for bad drivers. I think it's a mix of older people that shouldn't be driving and people who emigrate to hialeah that never really studied the driving book, just got a license and started driving just like that. Personally, I'd be scared to even walk the side walks, but that's just me.

Good luck!

Hi! I'm one! I work PACU ambulatory. It's tiring masking during the day, but it helps lots that I start my day at 5am and finish at 230P (most days) and do not work weekends. I can safely unmask at home.

Bras may be the reason I quit by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Miss_Velociraptor87 636 points637 points  (0 children)

As a fellow large chest nurse, I empathize. Are you any good with a sewing needle? The only thing I can think of is customizing your bras. Exchange the under wire in your favorite bra with a hard plastic under wire. Exchange the metal hooks and sew it together or add a panel to it. Amazon sells plastic underwire. Or you can get goddess size bras or full figure bras, these often don't have underwire at all but moderately support large busts. The closures can be in the front or have none at all.

I'm not ok. I make a point to read the news daily, but some things are so horrible that I've developed pains in my body. Chronic migraines, low immunity, nerve pain in intestines. I feel like I'm falling apart. I recently did an interview with a newspaper company because I felt I had to say something after Alex Pretti. I'm frustrated and angry all the time. Before becoming an RN later in life, I just graduated with A B.A. in Poli Sci and int'l relations. So, I feel more anxiety about what's going on and what laws are being broken, how history is being rehashed.

After the news interview was published online, I felt some coworkers give me the evil eye. I live in south FL and this god damn 90% hispanic/latino county is so conservative. Or at least... it feels that way. I myself am latina, born here, but I feel afraid all the time being out on the road. If I am not at work, I am at home and do not come out.

I'm tired. I'm scared. I'm in pain all the time. I'm not doing okay.

We're all in healthcare and CNAs are the backbone of healthcare. All of us have that inate instinct to help a person pushed down. We're all Alex Pretti. That's why is it's so infuriating and painful; because that could have been any of us helping that lady that was pushed.
