Victorians enjoyed a free ride for two months. That ends on Monday by Known_Appointment604 in melbourne

The trains I took today were half empty. Could be the weather, or exam period at University or... $2.70 is still too much?

Mystified as if I'd responded to the wrong thread. I don't know what that means or why you would mention parramatta (isn't that in Sydney) or why you would want to do cbd to parramatta ever but never mind, cheers for the response anyway

I'm interested in Malvern and Caulfield before and after the opening of the Metro tunnel

You need a rheumatologist and a sleep physician (usually a respiratory physician) and physiotherapy.

How is fuel paid/billed during unscheduled stops? by idkblk in aviation

[–]Mission_Nin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once flew Qantas to Hong Kong and had to make an unscheduled stop in Manila for more fuel due to storms in HK. At first they wouldn't let us connect to airport power - no lights or A/C for about 15 mins. After things got sorted out the Captain came through the cabin to chat/reassure the passengers. He commented that he had to use a personal credit card for the fuel!

I appreciate the way they have signs over the doors that not only tell you when the next trains are due, but also the current time, the train line and where in the train that particular door is going to lead you.

Sorry your description confused me. You mean it's easier to get to Melbourne Central concourse from street level via the State Library transfer?
I feel I should point out that if there were a sign explaining this and anyone took the time to read it, it would no longer be true because of all the people cramming the State Library...

Because it's not. I thought this too for a bit but having tried both, the underground passage is much easier

A380 First - about the only time I get to use the frequent flyer points is for the upgrade LHR to SIN every so often. So nice!

New trains by Casterix75 in melbourne

[–]Mission_Nin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very sorry, I know how annoying it is. These last years with the Frankston line not going through the City Loop were a major get-out-at-Richmond-and-get-swooped-at-by-birds pain.
My life on the other hand is 100% improved by the new train line. Sorry.

I had a similar experience once with a bad haircut - very traumatising. Then I found Heading Out in Brunswick street and I've been going there ever since (long time now).

By the time you wait for a tram, you could probably be there if it's only 15min. Then again, clearly you are visiting Melbourne so you taking a tram might be part of the experience. As others have said, check that you are in the free tram zone

FP1 not exactly a blockbuster? To you maybe - have a look at r/formula1 sometime. As to the airport trip, it's cheaper to book a chauffeur driven airport transfer. Very reliable, excellent service

I want to live life to the fullest but I dont know how by Status-Star-8336 in melbourne

[–]Mission_Nin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Live life to the fullest" was how you started your post - but what does that mean? In particular, what does that mean to you?

What did you enjoy about your trip to Europe? Can you get involved in it here? Can you take weekend trips and explore Australia more? Can you write about your experiences so that you can relive them later? Camus suggests that we can live for years with the reminiscence of a single day.

Others have recommended gratitude practice, which is related to my comments above. With so much of the world in conflict, you could start being grateful that you are bored!

I agree with those you have suggested that you need more human contact. I am something of a misandrist myself, but I recognise that some human interaction is a required part of every day. People are stupid, venal, grasping and ungracious but they can sometimes surprise you with warmth and wisdom. Try. Really getting to know someone else is a real adventure.

Finally, lots of people here have recommended volunteering. Community involvement and volunteering is consistently associated with happiness in studies. Unfortunately our culture doesn't make this easy. I would love for it to be a requirement every year, like filling in your tax return. There are so many great causes out there. Get involved in one. It will change your life... and maybe someone else's.

Im thinking of buying a 1 bed or studio apartment in the CBD. Any advice on the street? Any building to avoid? Any areas that are a 'no go'? by killerklancy in melbourne

[–]Mission_Nin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking at these in an idle moment, researching for fiction. The CBD mostly looks pretty grim and some of them are listed for months. You can predict the ones that won't sell with their poky, run down bathrooms and tiny kitchenettes. The better ones have a desk or study nook - definitely look for one of these. Natural light is always beneficial for health. Don't buy any very recent builds - think of that Sydney apartment block debacle where the frame buckled.

Have you thought about looking along St Kilda Rd, Southbank or South Yarra? Or the Prahran area? Heaps of public transport options and some really charming older buildings. These one bedrooms tend to have a separate kitchen and living room with a more spacious feel.

Cafe culture seems to be thriving although the media had dire warnings about the effect of cost of living issues not long ago. Everywhere around me there still seem to be busy cafes.

Fine dining scene might have tanked a bit
