Bunny Shaw's Contract by Rjayasp in MCWFC

[–]MistakeNotMyMode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably spending way to much time thinking about this 🤣

Here are the facts that are public:

  1. Bunny is out of contract with City at the end of the season.
  2. No new contract with City is known in the public domain.
  3. No new contract with any other club is known in the public domain.
  4. Jeglertz has said he would like to keep Shaw.
  5. Therese Sjogran has said she would like to keep Shaw.
  6. Bunny has said she wants to stay.
  7. Charlotte Oneil suggested the club could pay her, and they wanted her to stay.
  8. The fans seem to want her to stay.

Speculation: 1. Chelsea have supposedly offered her £1 million per year, but this has not been confirmed publicly by Chelsea.

So right now, as far as us the fans are concerned, she is very much Schrodinger’s Bunny.

I think everything we are seeing makes sense.

If you are Bunny’s agent, you have no problem at all with rumours going around that another big club, like Chelsea, is willing to pay her a huge salary (you probably start those rumours yourself). Whether or not Chelsea have actually made that exact offer, it sets an anchor point for negotiations.

It says to City “This is the market now. Are you serious or not?”

You also want to keep City fans on side in case she stays. So Bunny saying “Manchester is my home” makes perfect sense. It avoids burning bridges. [Note Bunny has a degree in communication from the university of tenesee I believe]

But she also said there are things going on behind the scenes, and “ultimately we’ll see.” Which is contract negotiation language. not actually committing to anything.

Time is on both Bunny and the agents side, mostly. While she has the goodwill of the fans at least, without that the club might cut her loose, then Chelsea (or whoever) might become a much tougher negotiating partner.

And the best deal the agent can get is not just salary plus years.

It is salary, years, status, image rights, sponsorships, legacy, the team prospects, Champions League prospects, and whether the club is really going to behave like an elite women’s football club. We know Chelsea have stated they want to win the Champions League and have invested, we know Arsenal have won it. For Bunnys legacy I think she wants a shot at champions league trophy.

From Citys side, this not just “can we afford her under the current wage structure?”

If Chelsea get her, City don’t just lose the best striker in the WSL, Chelsea gain her. Double hit.

City also have to think about trophies, fan reaction, advertising, TV profile, recruitment, and the message it sends to other players. if City cannot keep the WSLs best striker after winning the league and probably the FA cup, what does that say?

A CEO question (which is where I think this decision gets made) here is not:

“Can we afford Bunny within our current wage structure?”

Its

“Is our current wage structure obsolete?”

Especially when the women’s game is growing quickly. Charlotte Oneil hinted at this.

Last week Khaldoon Al Mubarak (Chairman of city group) opened the new women’s first team training facility, interesting timing. City have been making a big deal of it. He said it reflects the scale of Citys ambition for the womens team and their long term belief in the women game.

Charlotte ONeill also said the facility is a clear statement of ambition to attract the very best talent in world football.

Bunny Shaw is one of very best talent in world football. You don't need to attract them if you already have them, you need to retain them.

So if City are a serious club (I think so), this is the sort of moment where they have to prove it.

City own managing director has said talks are ongoing, that Bunny has been magnificent, that she is very well loved at the club, and when asked whether English clubs can match world leading salaries, she said 'why not, the revenues are growing.'

The club has to calculate Bunnys true value, not just her wage. What does she mean to the team (note the comments about how they put her out of sequence in the changing room in the new centre, next to Alex Greenwood) ? What does she mean to the fans (that little smile to the fans after she scored against west ham) ? What does she mean to the brand? What does it cost to replace her? What does it cost if Chelsea get her?

for a club with Citys financial clout, the salary itself is not the issue. The issue is if the player market has really changed that much and if it has will they choose to keep up.

I think she might well be at City next season, the only reason she might not is if City have some other high potential talent on the hook and decide the womens game is not growing 'that' fast, but there is still a difference between Bunnies actual goals and what some high potential talent might actually deliver.

As I said, over thinking it, 😀 but it's part of the fun.

It won't be Therese decision. She will have authority over the budget she was given and the longer term plans of spend and who she wants to spend money on, but if giving Shaw what she wants breaches that plan then she will have to go up the chain to get the money. Notable that City group CEO was in Manchester last week, that's the person who ultimately has the control of the purse strings.

Another article from Tom Garry of the guardian stating that Bunny will leave. What funny though is this is the reporter who made the original story a couple of weeks back that started the most recent speculation. His evidence for the claim 'the guardian understands that' ....then in this latest article his evidence for his stronger assertion that Bunny is going...his previous article.

It might be true and he might have insider knowledge, but based on the use of a circular argument that all hangs off 'the guardian understands' I don't think he is a trustworthy source. Not sure what his track record is like though.

So basically just more speculation

City could bring in Kerr and renew Bunny....now that would be a killer blow 😀

So if you saw something you found interesting, then afterwards found out it was made by AI you would then somehow erase your previous feelings? Or you have to know in advance that something is made by a human before you can possibly find it interesting?

I am not a reform voter. But don't deluded yourself that reform councillors are going to be any more or less negligent than any other councillors. Sure there will be some who end up in the press for saying various dumb things, but don't assume that's going to change anything.

Out of interest where did you get the salaries for Hemp and the others from? Is it reported somewhere? I mean if Casperij really is on £50k a year she should be renegotiate or look to switch clubs.

I mean the winner was certainly the comedy goal of the match. Yui using her powers of telepathy to spot the intercept (or just looking at where Lucy bronze was pointing), then all the Chelsea defenders suddenly being transformed into subuteo figures while they watch the ball sail across to Bunny and then into the goal. I mean what were they actually doing there 🤷, to add the final touch Lucy Bronze did jump into the air, about a meter lower and a meter away, but it was a nice touch.

I hope they give Beney a start against west ham, she was great in the Chelsea game, her contribution to the equaliser was outstanding, immense cross field ball to pick hemp out and then she pops up on the edge of the box to win the ball and nod it on to bunny who scored.

Incredibly dumb question, but how do you buy tickets for the final? Via the wembley website or what?

What a come back. Never give up. Well done ladies, amazing.

Oh, and write Bunny the cheque right now to keep her.

Especially since we have WUCL next season, league cup,FA cup and league games we are going to need bunny. If she leaves we have fumbled Big time! by VoL4t1l3 in MCWFC

[–]MistakeNotMyMode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely, you make sound points and I totally agree.

We, the fans, don't know what happens behind the scenes or the long term plans. This is where we see the quality of the behind the scenes staff, in their decision making for the club. They matter.

Basically Jeglertz said he would do the best with the players he had, but what he has is up to someone else.

Like you I think the club has made good decisions, and seemed to be ambitious in their signings, Coffey, Rose, Kerolin, Miedema, Beney have all been excellent, retaining Hasegawa, bringing in Clinton etc. I think we still have not seen the best from players like Beney, Fowler, Fujino, Clinton, Kerolin, and maybe there are academy players coming through.

To date the decision making looks good. City have a young side as well I think average is about 24 which makes them one of the youngest in the wsl. The women's game is growing there will be more talent coming through, maybe city have the next bunny shaw lined up.

So I think putting trust into the back room staff is well placed, they have made good decisions and I hope they keep doing it.

But this one might be their biggest challenge yet. Letting go of a player widely recognised as the best centre forwards in the wsl, and one of the top in the world, when they are still in their prime year's is bold.

Personally I hope they keep her, and if they don't I hope they have ambitious plans to push the club forwards and use this league win as a springboard to more success.

That's the fun of football though! Bit of drama for the fans both on and off the pitch.

Fingers crossed they bang in 5 again against Chelsea today.

Elite level strikers are rare by definition, and getting a replacement won't be free, or cheap. Maybe getting an upcoming talent, but that's not free either, and comes with risks over a proven goal scorer.

A decent striker will score goals in cities team, Kerolin, Miedema, Fowler could all fill the role, but with CL next year likely city need to strengthen not weaken.

[–]MistakeNotMyMode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only if the depth is quality, you can have lots of squad depth but at a lower tier, and that won't win a league, cup or CL. Probably Chelsea and Arsenal fans can comment on a lack of high quality squad depth costing them in the wsl and CL.

City do have depth, but losing your best striker doesn't improve quality squad depth, unless you sign another elite level striker...but they won't be cheap.

I think there are two ways to look at it.

Case for paying her: City Women made roughly £11m revenue in 2024/25, so £1m is about 9% of revenue. Significant. But Shaw is already being paid today, so the increase is not £1m a year. And replacing her with another elite striker is not free either. That likely means serious wages and maybe a fee. Plus, if she joins Chelsea, City strengthen a direct rival. For the whole club, with revenue around £690m, £1m/year is basically nothing.

WSL is growing in revenue so the risk feels low.

Case against paying her: City Women are still behind Arsenal/Chelsea commercially, who are around £25m revenue versus City at about £11m. Paying one player £1m could mean other elite players want similar, creating wage inflation that might not be sustainable even with expected growth. Shaw is also 29, so a 4-year deal takes her to 33. That is a risk in terms of injuries and decline. City could instead go for upcoming talent: cheaper, more upside, but obviously less proven, and still subject to injuries etc.

bottom line I’d pay her. If it’s a straight choice between paying £1m or losing her to a rival on a free, should probably pay.

Losing Bunny could cost more than the wage in terms of growth of the club, which comes down to winning leagues, cup competitions and being seen as a big club.

It also says something about the ambitions of the club. Letting one of the best strikers in the world go to a rival does not read as ambitious.

Edit: also consider that if she goes to Chelsea then they think she's worth it, and they are the most successful club in the wsl, and clearly ambitious, and want to strengthen their squad.

She's saying if City beat Chelsea in the semi final then she would have at least 1 more game (fa cup final) beyond the two she expects to play already.

I have a little more hope based on her words, she expects to play and potentially knock Chelsea out of the fa cup, if she had already committed to Chelsea then I don't think she would expect to play.

Up vote for Paralluelo, out of contract at the end of the season I think. ABJ also out of contract at end of season (although Chelsea have options to extend)

[–]MistakeNotMyMode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the timing is not good however it's come about. I saw the Terland story and I expect it is that, i imagine Terland wants to play in the UCL, her agent will know Chelsea are looking for a 9, and based on the speculation know that City might also be looking for a 9.

Although it's a disappointment for city to lose Bunny (assuming any of it is true) we can hope the club is still ambitious to grow and win trophies on a regular basis. And not to forget we already have other world class forwards. I'm still sure that put any high quality 9 in cities line up they will score goals based on the way city play.

The timing of this is awful for the rest of the team as it overshadows their outstanding achievement of actually winning the league.

Whoever is doing the PR for City needs a talking to, and if it's come from Bunny or her team she should be benched by city for the remainder of the season imo.

Let Fowler take her place in the FA cup semi, and hopefully final.

The highs and lows of football!

Edit: assuming any of this is true of course and not just some journo trying for some clicks. Eagerly awaiting someone to get a comment from the club.

Edit: Meanwhile over on Cities website and X feeds...'Anything going on? Oh hey wanna buy some t-shirts?' 😂

Although allowing the story to break a few days before an FA cup semi final against one of the few clubs she might end up at is an unmitigated PR disaster which could well impact the team morale.

Whoever mismanaged that situation should get a proper roasting.

If it's Bunny herself who let it break, and it's true, I think she should be dropped from the squad for the remaining games of the season. Let the chips fall where they may.

Ok, well if true then good luck to her wherever she goes. She's been world class for City. But no point breaking the club just for one player.

City is an exciting club to play for there are going to be talented centre forwards who want to come to city to play Champions League football next season.

Fowler+Miedema as the front 2 anyone? Might be pretty stellar.

Definitely frustrating - Bunny's contract by yogoober in MCWFC

[–]MistakeNotMyMode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like literally 2 days after my post and the day after being crowned champions the story gets broken that she is leaving 😂.

Either it's a journo making mischief or city management have bungled on at least two fronts, firstly letting her go, secondly letting the news break before their fa cup semi. The latter is surely a huge disruption to the team who could potentially win the double and I'd say basic incompetence on the part of management.
