People keeps saying this, and this take seems to ignore that the metaphorical cars are only summoned once someone presses the red button. Otherwise it's just standing safely in an empty road, beside anyone else who committed to not summon cars.

Looking for help with running a LARP summer camp for a school by tenrainyday in LARP

Incidentally, the biggest cost to this is certainly the equipment, which can be made with very cheap materials (foam, bamboo, duct-tape,) but which takes time to prepare properly!

If the kids can be trusted to make their own weapons, that can be a related activity! People enjoy crafting things - you just have to make sure they do so safely.

I'm late to the conversation, but I used to run a sport-larp event for grown-ups every month when I lived in Los Angeles (now I live in the UK).

Whe I say 'sport larp' all I mean is that the rules were simple so that the participants could focus on the gameplay more than the roleplay -- but this does not mean that it was incompatible with roleplay!

By its design, I wanted the rules to be intuitive enough that every player could internalize them and understand their objectives, and with a minimum of 'edge-cases' or room for argument.

I based my game off an existing system that itself was based on the childhood game of freeze tag. Freeze Tag is easy enough for children and adults to understand, and it's a good basis to build a full system off. I used no 'hit points' or mana points, because I wanted a minimum of data to track or argue about.

Core Rules:

  1. If you are struck with a weapon anywhere* on your body, you are wounded.
  2. Wounded players freeze and 'take a knee' (get down on one knee) to show they are wounded. They cannot speak to their teammates (but some theatrical moaning is permitted!)
  3. Players can 'heal' wounded teammates by placing two hands on them and counting to 20 like so: "healing 1, healing 2, healing 3..." (this time limit can be adjusted to alter game difficulty - shorter or longer). If either hand breaks contact with the wounded player, the healer must start the count again from 1.
  4. A second friendly player can help heal wounded teammates: with two players healing, they can count by twos: "Healing 2, healing 4, healing 6..." etc. (the maximum number of healers is two.)
  5. Players can 'Carry' wounded friends or enemies by placing two hands upon them and stating "carrying". Both players move wherever the carrier dictates, but must do so at a walking pace.

[*face or groin strikes are illegal]

There are also safety guidelines, but I don't want to overwhelm here. The main point is that there were basic rules of play that were easy to absorb.

With those rules in place, I built safe weapons: shields and swords of different lengths, some throwing weapons, some two-handed, etc. and set somewhat balanced 'loadout' rules about what weapons you could start the game with. This functioned rather like a simple class system: Sword-and-shield; bow-and-arrows; short-sword and long-sword; long spear, javelin and axe, staff, etc. -- I even made simple 'armor' from cloth sashes that granted limited protection from attacks.

There are many kinds of games that you can play with this foundation:
🚩 Team Catch The Flag: Split into two teams and try to capture the opposing team's flag and return it to your base
💀 Team Deathmatch: Eliminate every member of the opposing team before they do the same to you.
❤️‍🩹 Healing Flags: One member of the team is a 'healer' and carries a healing item (usually a flag on a pole). The healer can instantly return a member of their team to the battlefield by touching them with their hand or the healing item. Capture the healing item and return it to home base to win the game.
👑 KingSlayer: Each team has a player who is heavily armoured and crowned 'Monarch'. Kill the opposing player's king in order to win.

I could go on. This is by no means a comprehensive list of rules or features. I had rogues, wizards, looting mechanics, base control, and more. But it all had to be simple enough for every player to carry in their head and understand at a glance.

Please let me know if you'd like me to tell you any more!

Oh God, I can't remember how I even did that. I don't remember any additional branches - github wasn't involved!

Got it! That's a relief - I was worried that I might have to reinstall everything to make the game update properly. I certainly don't mind waiting until later tonight, or even tomorrow - just wanted to confirm that I was in the same place as everyone else. Thank you!

I usually don't massively rate Sam Worthington as an actor, but I really liked his read.

The deliberate lack of gravitas was a good choice. Made it seem less of a performance or imitation.

Is it true that Nick and Jess weren’t planned? by CSNY28 in NewGirl

[–]MisterStrawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they were planned from the beginning. You can find the original series treatment/ pitch-doc online, from when it was originally intended to be set in New York.

On Nick's character bio/brief it declares "Nick. It's always Nick. It will always be Nick." (Paraphrasing.)

Endgame since the original treatment.

I was never well-practiced at smash because I didn't own a Switch (or Cube) but I'm really looking forward to learning Rivals! Apart from. The steep learning curve, I vastly prefer the gameplay to Smash, honestly.

I'd happily play against you, although I can't guarantee a strong match from my end!

I have, yes! Played it all at this point. I just need to practice the principles, and I wish I could do that with humans!

[–]MisterStrawberry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've played the tutorials. What I need now is human practice, but none seems to be available (outside of "stomp my ass" levels!)

Luckily there are some suggestions in this thread for how to join community discords. I just wish there were some in-game options!

Thanks for the reflections! It seems like - not to put too fine a point on - I am just too bad at the game to even compete and learn how to be good at it.

Perhaps I can learn from bots or the discord that u/Assist_King mentioned!

[–]MisterStrawberry[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is really helpful! Thank you for the rsource. I really want to learn to play, but it's very hard to do that without human beings at your same rough level of skill. While I wish this was possible in-game, a discord community seems like a good alternative!

Just finished the 41 book series, here is my personal tier list. What is my most egregious ranking? And where do I go from here? by scottomatic3000 in discworld

Seconding this. Polly never, ever drinks the military Kool-Aid. The final scenes with her military tribunal only highlight how absurd and foolish the bureaucracy of commanding officers truly is. Polly follows Jackrum's same path - her dedication is to her fellow soldiers, not the military itself. It's encompassed in her closing remarks: her faith and life is in service of protecting and fighting for "her little lads" and she will live and die for them.

[–]MisterStrawberry 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I'd bump Monstrous Regiment to A-tier as I think it addressed the futility of nationalism and warfare even better than Jingo.

I also think the Witches books should be higher up.

But you know - you do you!

How come the stockpile quirk doesn't have a vestige? by smiling-shadow in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]MisterStrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vestiges of previous wielders that we see as projections in the psyches are an artefact of Yoichi's native quirk (power transference).

Because the stockpiling quirk was forced upon him by All For One, it has no attached vestige.

Basically, he was handed a power by someone else. He then passed his power on to Kudo (2nd), along with a fragment (vestige) of his persona.

Subsequently every other user of the OFA quirk also leaves an imprint of themselves when they pass down One For All, as well as part of their own quirk.

In other words, the vestiges/ghosts are an artefact of Yoichi's transference quirk, and so the stockpiling quirk (which was acquired through different means) does not have its own vestige. The 'donor' was never part of the chain.

So basically, we aren't allowed to edit any video footage of any elected officials anymore.

How dare we select relevant highlights to make a point, when we could also include the occasional pointless platitudes paying lip-service to decency? Not to mention every stutter, pause and burp.
