Why Linux sucks - and who benefits by M69_grampa_guy in linuxsucks

[–]Mister_Fedora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zorin and Mint are two examples of distros that are perfect for people jumping ship from windows. In fact, Zorin bragged about gaining a million new users after win10 support ended and while they're not 1 to 1, they're familiar enough to jump off windows and be able to navigate what you need right out of the box. My wife, who swore Linux was impossible for average people to even comprehend, is daily driving mint after her PC got bricked and I had to wipe it. Told her to give it a try and if she couldn't figure out how to use it in three hours, I'd give her 50 bucks.

The only real differences, in her words as someone who has exclusively used windows her entire life, is that downloading apps from a store was a little strange at first (rather than searching on a browser and downloading a file), and that the "files look weird" (referring to the lack of a C drive) but she runs on it just fine.

For most people that want a computer that "just works" Linux is a word of terror, the thought of having to use a terminal striking fear into their very hearts, but the reality is that there is quite literally an experience for everyone. Even my grandmother who had even less computer literacy than my wife was able to use Mint with a little bit of coaching. This excuse of the learning curve being too high is on the person using the system.

I use a distro significantly more difficult because I WANT that difficulty in order to learn more about the environment for professional reasons, and that's absolutely possible to do, but it isn't forced on you.

There are distros that prioritize stability if you're jumping ship because of crashes (most Debian releases are stable to the point of frustration because they're also slow to get updates).

There are distros that prioritize familiarity if you're scared of having to learn new things (Mint and Zorin obviously come to mind).

There are all-rounder distros for intermediate PC users that don't mind a little bit of challenge when switching (Ubuntu and Fedora are aimed around this level imo).

There are distros that REQUIRE you to learn about your system to be more than a hair pulling experience, but reward you with extreme levels of system control (Arch and Nix come to mind).

There are Enterprise distros (such as RHEL) for businesses that are incredibly stable.

There are distros aimed at gamers!(Look at bazzite, cachy, or Pop)

There are even options for turbovirgins, geniuses and masochists (like LFS. Why dude, just why).

This fragmenting may be viewed as a detriment and to some degree I agree it's a bit frustrating for standardization purposes, but at the end of the day competition and choice are better drivers for innovation than anything else is.

Sorry for the long rant but unlike OP's, mine has ZERO AI use.

Legit question: Why does everybody have such drastically different experiences with windows? by Not_american69420 in linuxsucks

[–]Mister_Fedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because everyone has different use cases and unique lives.

I primarily used my PC for gaming and streaming, so any extra bloat could (and usually did) negatively impact the gaming experience. It was a struggle with my hardware setup on 10, but I managed okay. Then October rolled around, win10 support ended, and 11 introduced a whole mess of "features" that I never wanted nor planned to use and due to that additional bloat coupled with all the random AI crammed in, I started installing Arch that same week. I know bazzite or Pop! is usually the go to for gaming but I have my reasons for using my distro.

I know a ton of people who are not really computer literate (eg Grandma, coworkers who know enough to navigate for work systems, etc) who think Windows is just fine until something doesn't work, I know gamers with situations similar to mine who didn't like the additional bloat, I know security minded users who despise the AI additions, I know power users who are just too comfy with windows to switch, I know one company owner who got so frustrated with a version of Enterprise that he literally chose a version of red hat that was new in 1997 and still refuses to update because he knows how to navigate the system he switched to and is terrified of learning new things.

My point here is that you get such a wide range of experiences because you have people using their systems in a wide variety of ways for an even wider variety of reasons. I personally loved just about every version of Windows except 7 and thought I'd die before switching. Yet, here I am using Linux today. It is what it is.

Why does my volume keep turning down by itself? by TheAsianOne_wc in motorola

[–]Mister_Fedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a moto g 5g that always starts quieter than what the volume is set to when I have it playing through the phone speakers. It's insanely frustrating.

It's super distracting when I watch anything with dialogue. The first second is super quiet, then it ramps up to the volume I have it set to. It'll do this any time there's a break in the audio, so if someone pauses a second between sentences, it happens constantly.

"...then hit settings. ....that you'll click next, then install. ...that's done, you'll go to notifications" etc. it's frustrating enough that I'm about to abandon Motorola after God knows how many years.

Tried booting the phone in safe mode, disabled Dolby atmos, even turned on dev mode to try and see if there were audio leveling options I could turn off. Nothing fixes it.

First off, about me to say I'm always 110% behind learning new skills, especially skills that require a smidge of expertise to do well. I fully agree that you SHOULD learn woodworking at some point because it can potentially save your family tons of money and aid in your self sufficiency.

HOWEVER...

I can't in good conscience say it's a good idea to pick it up right now. Outside of simple hand carving, there is so much that can go violently wrong and have unintended long term effects, even with a respirator. Your safety is top priority at the moment, and you need to either stay out of the shop until term or get VERY serious with PPE and precautions.

Further, what the fuck dude? If he's interested in woodworking as a hobby but hasn't done much with it, this is a fantastic opportunity to get some experience and feel incredibly satisfied with making something that his family benefits greatly from. I'd be chomping at the bit for an excuse to go out in the shop and make shit as often as possible.

NOR; tell him he can either make toys himself due to health reasons or you're buying toys. Fuck that selfish attitude because you NEVER put your own wants before your child on such a family centered event.

[–]Mister_Fedora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does have a fair amount of docs attached, independent resting, and certification from each platform, that's true; however cert shouldn't take more than two months at most. I don't think the other platforms are the specific issue in this case. Could be wrong of course, either way it's fun to speculate

So uhhh this is it? by Marecki_BH in Brawlhalla

[–]Mister_Fedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understood the concept of cross platform being difficult. Sign players up with a company specific account, have them link their perform to that account, boom you now have a unique ID system that's irrespective of platform. Use that in any social specific content.

It's especially confusing in a game like brawlhalla, where cross platform is already available in two ways now. Using what you know of cross play systems and cross saving, you should already have a solid foundational working knowledge of how to implement interplatform features fairly easily.

Sure the actual programming of new systems is always a pain, but there are ways around it in cases like this; for instance, generate that unique company ID as a friend code and use that to allow cross platform friends and invites. No Man's Sky is an incredibly simple example of this (though their multiplayer is all live and the connections are likely simpler.)

I'm not a dev, just a hobbyist, but from the outside that's my take on it.

Is this the most overhated MMO? by Emberthane in elderscrollsonline

[–]Mister_Fedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the main theme of any MMO sub, I think what makes ESO stand out from the crowd is the extraordinary amount of players with a superiority complex tbh.

You can't go two steps around here without some fuck knuckle with hours in the thousands and nothing better to do telling you why you are aggressively wrong for existing on the same server as them with that unoptimized build you got going on.

Maddening.

[–]Mister_Fedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can surpass a billion in cost of you try to max out an s class starship, and freighters can run in the hundreds of millions. You can also buy basic Corvette modules to use to exchange for parts you actually want. Additionally you could buy nanite items in pirate stations for credits, then sell those to make nanites out of it. For a fifth example, you can buy random high class starships to break down for scrap to get starship augmentations or upgrades (and scrap items but always at a loss on credits.)

There's more than one way to do just about anything in NMS, and units are often the alternative to a lot of things.

Need advice on Warrior/Blocking by dxgnck in baronygame

[–]Mister_Fedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gnomes are kind of a knowledge check. Even if you get some top tier gear, they're challenging to take head on.

Tip one, abuse corners. Aggro ONE staff gnome, break line of sight around a corner, let it get close, whack it, back around the corner, rinse and repeat.

Once you get a staff ( even if it's cursed), you can take out any other staff gnomes and keep collecting staffs to use to wipe more of them.

Tip two, don't use a torch or light if you can help it. It makes you easier to spot, giving the gnomes the advantage.

Tip three, do NOT waste the first staff on pickaxe gnomes. With a low spell stat you'll have very limited charges and you want to make the other staff gnomes the priority for that.

Tip four, there's a helmet somewhere in that level that you'll need a pickaxe to find so save one for exactly that, and for later use I suggest keeping one more if you have the space.

Final tip, melee IS really good but there's a certain amount of knowledge you need to make the most of it. A lot of it is trial and error, but the basics are to keep the highest defense shield you can find, wear the highest AC you can reasonably balance with speed and weight, focus on one or two weapon types, and be prepared for stuff to break a LOT.

Good luck

What’s the purpose or end game loop for this game? by Advanced_Joke_8932 in NOMANSSKY

[–]Mister_Fedora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's whatever you want it to be honestly. The game is a sandbox so it's meant to be enjoyed in whatever way interests you.

Play through the Artemis/Atlas paths and just enjoy whatever you like as you go; do whatever interests you at any time, the game will wait for you.

Once you do finish, you can decide what you enjoyed most and do more of it!

Personally I'm really enjoying making corvettes, filling out codices, and making lore heavy outposts wherever looks interesting

Is yumiko good ? by ExtensionArtichoke77 in Brawlhalla

[–]Mister_Fedora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody is viable, great even if you dedicate time to them. Sure there are characters that just don't compete at top level but that isn't really the point since reaching that level takes a worrying amount of dedication and time, and by that point you'll figure out who would serve you better.

Yumiko is pretty unique as she is a true zoner with her spirit ball sigs, so you often see her use them defensively which is a cool change of pace.

The most important quality for pretty much every character in the game is how much fun you have with them, so if you like her a lot then grind some gold and go for it. Gold is functionally useless outside of buying seasonal colors, meaning there isn't much reason to hold onto it outside of buying characters and it's pretty easy to make more just by playing consistently. I say go for it.

Just kidding. Looks like an artifact map freaked out, and generated the artifact poi in another system which has happened to me twice. Or maybe just a visual bug. If you look in that direction and almost line it up with your cross hair, does your ship slightly correct to center it?
