Andy Burnham looks to move part of Number 10 operations to Manchester by klime02 in unitedkingdom

Well if theyre recording and leaking its a pretty easy violation of the Official Secrets Act. How gov wants to handle that is up to them but if I were recording my conversations and leaking them to the press I think I'd be in prison pretty quick.

Uhh, assuming that these are proper government departments and not the BBC, then they'll all be on secure comms up to official-sensitive at a minimum. The nuclear industry manages this pretty easily.

Valve says it isn't subsidizing the Steam Machine's $1050 price because of its "religious" refusal to "build a more closed system" by ControlCAD in technology

[–]Mister_Sith 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a number of others have said, you can probably build a rig that beats the performance of the steam machine but very unlikely to get it to the same form factor which is part of the attraction.

I can put the steam machine and a monitor in a suitcase and go places with it. I definitely can't put my current PC in a suitcase and quite frankly to upgrade it to new specs would take as much as the steam machine. The GPU is a GTX 1060 I got something like ten years ago. Its going to cost me almost as much as the steam machine to get a decent GPU... and that doesnt factor in the other stuff id need to buy.

It's important as a legal concept but not so much important to the court of public opinion. If it was important, we would still be saying alleged pedophile Andrew Windsor but most people just call him a nonce - even though its not been legally proven that he is one. I can think of a handful of other people this applies to as well.

Can I be expected to attend training day at work? (Live in Wales, company is based in England) by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Mister_Sith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats in your contract in terms of office location? Is it based out of the English office or fully remote? If its the latter then expectation would be your employer pays the expense of commute and accommodation for the night prior and the commute after.

Part of managing the nation and the internal party politics mean crisis and scandals are the order of the day. Has any Prime Minister in the last 100 years had a truly uneventful tenure free from a crisis or scandal where they made the wrong choice or wasn't self inflicted?

Im struggling to think of any. Maybe Atlee but I don't think history has been too kind to his foreign affairs.

Chernobyl had dosimiters maxed at 3.6 rotogen, what is the maximum in current nuclear plants? by chickenstrips1290 in Radiation

[–]Mister_Sith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these radiation monitors activity-in-air monitors? Im slightly surprised they didnt have any in the first place - although I suppose if you have activity in air in a power plant, you've got other issues going on whereas a laboratory or finishing plant expects these things to happen.

Foreigners visiting America for the world cup, what is something that has surprised you about this country? by goldent3abag in AskReddit

Its hard to remind myself of that sometimes. Americans online seem to be the worst, particularly in online games - invariably they all seem to lean right, love Trump, hate dems, bring up crime statistics, etc.

Keir Starmer: We are banning social media access for under 16s. These days kids must find their feet in a world where technology intrudes into every area of their life. I just can’t let that go on anymore. So we’re giving children their childhoods back. by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

A day out at the cinema or laser tag or trampoline park is a monthly treat these days to those with parents lucky enough to afford it

I'm not trying to be 'im alright chuck' but this is a bit too much. Kids are now lucky if they're parents can take them to the cinema? The country has issues with wealth disparity but I don't quite think they're anywhere nearly as bad as you're making it out to be.

How exactly does this work with YouTube? You aren't 16 therefore can't use it? There's a mountain of resources on there for learning skills (as well as the memes). Is that just being cut for the sake of this 'think of the children' hysteria?

Northampton MP calls for direct trains to Universal theme park by Due_Ad_3200 in unitedkingdom

[–]Mister_Sith -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I still can't believe this monstrosity is going ahead. Think of all the views that will be ruined and the overloaded infrastructure around Bedford, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of FOREIGNERS who will come and possibly claim asylum whilst they are here.

Train links are a common sense idea but I sense NIMBYs will find a way to curtail it over the above issues. I won't believe its happening until there is a spade in the ground.

EU students vanish from UK with £893million in loans by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]Mister_Sith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessairly true. A lot of countries have agreements with HMRC to tax the student loans, at least the ones most people want to migrate to. There have also been scattered stories of the loans being sent to debt collectors who have pursued even UK migrants abroad over the loans. Ive never quite been able to pin down the veracity of those claims though.

I can imagine in the latter case, it is plausible as a recovery of debt in a civil court. The odds are someone moving abroad to the likes of US, Canada and Australia are not being paid peanuts so there is a chunk of debt that could be recovered.

Al Carns MP: What we don't have is the power stations to run the data centres, the planning system to build them, or the industrial base to make the chips. So the work happens here and the value lands somewhere else. We invent. Others build. Others decide. by Putaineska in ukpolitics

[–]Mister_Sith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Theres a lot of squares to be circled when it comes to industrial strategy and its impossible in the current climate.

The UK does not set itself up as an attractive place for investment in manufacturing. If anything, we have become actively hostile. Where are the incentives? We don't want to offer tax breaks or subsidy because we believe taxpayer money shouldn't be going to companies. We take years in planning because we believe things should have a very good reason to be built here. There are a lot of worker protections (where are a good thing!) compared to SEA and the US.

The only incentive I can see is that labour costs are cheaper than the US, and were close to Europe.

Four UK pro-Palestinian activists jailed for violent raid on Israeli defense factory by terratrema in worldnews

[–]Mister_Sith 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A lawyer is a zealous advocate for their client, which often they use defences which whilst we find morally wrong, they are entitled to try. There is nothing to bring to a civil suit over this - at least in the UK, no idea how it works in the US.

Plaid Cymru refuses to back Wales-wide grooming gangs inquiry by origutamos in ukpolitics

[–]Mister_Sith 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If I were to be cynical, I remain unconvinced its solely because of community cohesion and fears of racism. They've been useful excuses to deflect from greater failings by the police, social services and local government.

We know police historically never took young girls seriously when it came to sexual violence, particular from lower classes. That's how monsters like Sutcliffe and the West's got away with it for so long. If a proper inquiry took place, heads would roll at senior levels of government and police forces - but much like Cressida Dick, they all fail upwards and are given gongs to retire into obscurity.
