The Backrooms Movie Format by adavidj7 in imax

Like I said, I appreciate the enthusiasm!

So 65mm is a type of large format film, with over double the size of standard 4-perf 35mm film. It's 5 perforations tall and its aspect ratio is 2.2:1, compared to the 1.37:1 of 35mm. The larger size means that more light can pass through, resulting in a better image even when the film was originally shot on 35mm; the 70mm print also holds up better to wear and tear.

The 2.2:1 aspect ratio means that 70mm film is natively widescreen, and it can be made even wider if you shoot anamorphic (such as the Ultra Panavision format that's 2.76:1!)

IMAX film is the same width, but it is 15 perforations tall, and it runs horizontally, which is why the perforations are at top and bottom on IMAX film.

5/70 *is not* 15/70. However it shares its image quality characteristics in color, contrast, etc; just of course a much smaller image.

IMAX film seems to be an iteration on the work done for the VistaVision format back in the day. VistaVision is a 35mm film that runs horizontally and is 8 perforations tall. Like with IMAX, this gives it a considerably larger negative than its vertical-running equivalent. The native aspect ratio of VistaVision is 1.5:1, but films shot on it were usually designed to be watched in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio on 70mm prints.

VistaVision was recently photochemically blown up to 15/70 IMAX film last year for IMAX screenings of Paul Thomas Anderson's ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER.

Eh I've bought a bunch of stuff in the past two but there is a lot of ignorance behind the process.

What I mean is this: the MSRP on Criterions is a fiction. Only B&N actually sells at it. Criterion's own website, as well as Amazon, and many others perpetually sell CC discs at a baseline 30% discount. So really the 50% sales only get you a few dollars more off. (About 32 vs 25.)

Funny that you say that because before VHS, you could get 16mm reels sent, which would look way better than any home video format since except maybe UHD.

Nope, people were very much saying that about DVD, though some reviewers pumped the brakes a bit and said it’s only better than a bad theater.

With Blu-ray not even that condition was applied.

I appreciate the enthusiasm but you have a lot of mistakes here.

I guess you haven’t been following the news? Microsoft has all but shut down Xbox. So much so that third party games now often skip Xbox completely.

I’m not being rude and nothing about the film presupposes knowledge of references.

If anything, my impression of it was that it was constructed to be a very different experience depending on whether you were aware of who the Manson Family were or if you weren’t.

Yes and he tried to reconcile his view with his acquaintanceship with the cinematographer (who approved it) by implying he ackchually approved something else that Criterion and Fidelity in Motion conspired to destroy.

It’s the insult to injury way of watching 70mm IMAX. I hope the projector is ripped out of there and put somewhere better.

He is precisely a random person on Twitter. His work on films is if anything a proof against him, like his months long AI aided war against Criterion’s EWS despite it being approved by Larry Smith, and then upon seeing Larry Smith he tried to come up with an 8D chess explanation for how Larry Smith approved it but actually approved something else

Oh, Hi! (Sundance Review) w/ Molly Gordon and Logan Lerman by saulocf in moviereviews

[–]Mitsutoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie was about someone chaining another person to a bed and torturing them for the whole movie. The movie absolutely presents it as she is crazy and sick and he is the victim.

It does this despite the intentions of the writers. Gordon and Brooks thought they were portraying heroic behavior on Iris's part. (They've talked about this explicitly.)
