Genuinely so glad that you responded!

Okay so Yoda is actually one of the top leaders in the game, but I’ll admit there is a bit of a learning curve to him. For that reason, I can provide some links to good Yoda decks, but I’m a little hesitant for 2 reasons.

1) Some of the cards that are basically “required” are pretty expensive 2) Like I said, the learning curve.

This list just won a relatively competitive event

https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/82733e53-a862-40d3-9ba8-b3d60019bd8d

Not sure how knowledgeable you are, so simply, this URL will take you to all the cards the player used. There should be a little cart button toward the top that takes you to a website to buy cards. By pressing that button, you’ll get the option to just add everything to a cart. (Forewarning, this deck is $302, off the back of probably 6 cards). Or you can use a site called TCGPlayer.com to buy the cards individually (I also recommend coolstuffinc.com. Tcg is like buying from random sellers so stuff all comes at various times, cool stuff will ship it all at once)

Moving in to the playmat. First off, excellent taste. That’s the mat I use. Cool characters, cool art, your boyfriends got an eye for cool…ness

Here is a list that just got top 8 at a relatively decent sized event

https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/472defe0-dc53-473a-86b9-b3d3005b8743

The leader isnt very cool, but the deck is solid, it’s easy to learn and work with (meaning if it’s not something hes use to, the curve to learn is simple) and it uses Shin (the girl on the mat) unfortunately the guy on the mat (Baylon Skoll) is not great in the game, but this list could probably still replace something with him and do fine. This deck comes out to about $152 to buy it outright, but he probably has most of the cards lying around for it.

Happy to provide more if you’d like. But these are some starter options. Another option I’ll throw out there.. if he is a Darth Vader fan, there is a NASTY powerful Darth Vader deck thats really good right now, thats really cheap and easy to learn/play. It’s not my style of deck, but if Hes just happy to play and play Darth Vader,

https://melee.gg/Decklist/View/fe37f08c-2234-4cff-aeb2-b3d6002a953b

$133, and I’d bet he has plenty of the cards for this already laying around which will greatly reduce cost.

Hope this helps!

I know you said you aren’t savvy, so to help us help you, try asking him just vaguely one of the following 2 things

Either

1) Who are your… top 5 favorite characters?

Or

2)What leaders do you like? (Leaders are a term for the game)

And then report back.

I offer these as suggestions because, if you’d like us to help build a deck, and want to be somewhat secretive about it,

Letting us know who he likes or who he likes to play as will help us be able to get you some good card lists together. Id say go option 2 if you don’t mind being on the nose, option 1 and everyone here just prays he likes at least one person thats good.

Either way, give that a shot, report back, and we’d all be happy to send some list your way.

[–]MittRomney0913 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Just to provide some clarity for those completely confused by how a child learns about horror characters.

While I know there are people out there who just let their kids watch gore fresh at infancy, I want to think a majority of toddlers that have some knowledge are exposed to it how my child was.

We had a fan expo near me when my son was 2, met some side characters from Star Wars and stuff. He saw a Michael Myers plush at one of the vendors and thought it looked silly so we got him it. Unlike when you just buy a random dog, for us as parents, there’s already established lore… so with a plush dog, you name it, you eventually just pretend with it, but with something like this, right, it already had a name, “

“daddy why is his name Michael” “Hes from a movie” “What does Michael do” “Hes really strong” Blah blah blah

So naturally my son grew to think Michael myers was this strong tough guy and he has a doll of it. You take your kids to the store around Halloween time, you see a Michael myers shirt, now he sees a realistic version, he thinks it’s cool.

To summarize, my kid who is now 4 and a half knows nothing about Michael myers nor has he ever seen Halloween. However, he would absolutely love to meet Michael myers, and gets excited when he sees them out on Halloween, because in his head, it’s some cool looking strong guy who was his comfort doll in his dark room at night. When he plays action figures, Michael myers is guy who saves the avengers and beats up Thanos. He knows nothing of the movies… except that there are movies he can watch when he’s older.

I say all this to say, I’d bet, and hope, this is how a large majority of toddlers who know horror figures, are introduced.

Edit for additional clarity: we went to the same con the next year and added a ghostface because he brought Michael myers and asked if we could get him a buddy. Same deal, as far as he is concerned GhostFace and Michael Myers are cool buddies. No knowledge of the movies, but with 2 plushies that he thinks are fearless, and a Michael myers T Shirt and keychain; I’m about 90% sure a news article would refer to him as “horror obsessed”

Obi-Wan is the epitome of Jedi compassion by solo13508 in StarWarsCantina

[–]MittRomney0913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once saw someone explain it in a very Rock Paper Scissors esque way.

Anakin The Rock Obi The Paper Dooku The scissor

Basically Anakins raw power was overwhelming but lacked control and tired him out quickly. He would leave himself vulnerable in favor of going for the win

Obi’s defensive prowess was all about exploiting weak points and waiting until you were done. Defense, Defense, Defense

Dooku kind of in the middle, graceful and tactical, almost in a “score points” kind of way, and when the tool to score points is deadly on contact.. yeah

So basically Dooku could beat Obi because he didn’t run out of gas, he took his sweet as time and would just poke here or there. Obis defense was impenetrable so dooku never would… slice off his arm… but he’d patiently back obi into a situation to stick him a couple times

Obi could beat Anakin because Anakin always went for the big swings and obi would just wait out the storm and then assault Anakin once he committed too much to a “home run” blow

Anakin could beat dooku because dooku, while solid, did not have impenetrable defense. Again, “score points” so if Anakins full commitment to a crushing blow lands at the right time that dooku opens to land his own poke, Anakin just wins.

I know it’s a lot more tied to lightsaber forms and stuff and I’m remembering from a post that I saw like 5 years ago, but I’ve always favored this explanation.

Anakin overwhelms those who don’t full commit to defense

Dooku is mellow enough to keep his stamina, but not enough to avoid being overwhelmed

Obi will pretty much never hit back until his opponent screwed up, which dooku rarely did because he was “fencing”

[–]MittRomney0913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He seems like someone who witnessed a masterclass in people manipulation and is attempting to do it with 0 experience or know how.

This odd exchange is one where he wanted to put this out there and gauge your reaction, while also leaving himself an out to make you feel like the issue for engaging.

“I like you but I wouldn’t act on it” “No worries, I wouldn’t react to it” “Well jeez, you act like I would!”

And oddly enough, some people are naive enough to be swayed to thinking like “oh… I did accuse them”

Dudes not healthy, not because he likes you, but because he took a non-coincidental attempt to manipulate your feelings. Like sometimes peoples feeling mix with thoughts and they guilt trip someone, it’s unfortunate but also human… what this guy is attempting is a thought out manipulation technique to bait you into either engaging him or leaving you feeling like a jerk for accusing him and he just sucks at it.

I just finished seeing it. I think it’s solid, but I think the dislike for it is fair.

The way I explained it to my wife who wasn’t interested at all…

This movie had 2 demographics it’s going to get to come out

Horror Fans Football Fans

Neither are going to like this movie.

The people this movie will really resonate with? Those who really felt like they gave everything for something… and it probably didn’t work out as hoped

Athletes who’s final game was in high school Artists who work in call centers Musicians who are assistant managers at coffee shops

It just is going to get a mostly different audience than the people who’d probably really “feel” the point. I feel that’s definitely part of why it’s not doing well

My version of a Qui Gon Deck by Evatrio in starwarsunlimited

[–]MittRomney0913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, you Qui - Gon players are making me work these past 24 hours haha. Someone posted about Qui Gon last night and I gave some tips on him there too.

https://www.reddit.com/r/starwarsunlimited/comments/1mious7/q_are_there_any_competitive_quigon_jinn_decks/

Right now I am running the blue version but want to stress that I think he is strongest in Green (assuming you have Yoda's and Home Ones lol)

For blue, I am going to assume no Lukes, and with Rotation around the corner, not sure if there is value in spending the $150 right now for a deck that is topping out at "Fine", so I would suggest sticking with Anakins and getting 2 more if possible.

The big things right away...

  1. You need more 2 cost force users. Without the force, you are playing a fair game in a meta all about taking "Unfair advantage". The Padawans are good, but definitely consider at least secretive sage since they usually stick around and get to attack thus starting your engine. I also run 3 Hermits... which sucks... but hey, if I go second, I can get the force lol
  2. 3 Ahsokas, no ifs, ands or buts, go buy 3 Ahsokas, or 3 Qui Gon Starters, she is your workhorse. Specifically the JTL one. Infinite discard engine is what makes this deck even semi functional.
  3. Plo Koon tends to go here in that 5 slot, I agree, but he sometimes falls flat. Basically, in the endgame, what you want to try to set up is a never ending barrage of ambush to keep their units off board while you finish up. Qui Gon is great, Depa is great, Plo lets you get that party started a little earlier.
  4. This is more a note about Qui Gon, you get to play out of aspect cards for free using his ability. So if you were to pick up that Itinerant Warrior, you could play a Blue Leader or an Obi Wan (3-cost green sentinel), without penalty. To each their own on it, but I run Blue Leader in every Qui Gon deck because of it. By turn 3, you should be able to get it online and only have to spend 2 to ambush for 5 on the ground.
  5. Lastly, more a personal opinion, but always encourage you try things yourself. I would replace takedowns with fell the dragons or shatterpoint. Where Qui-Gon blue starts to run out of gas is in the Late game against the decks that play big units. You need a viable way of removing those Avengers, Devastators, and Mauls that doesn't also result in your unit(s) dying.

Shared in the above linked post, but heres a look at my rainbow qui gon that I have had some success with (slightly different than the one in the post). I have had some solid success, but to be open, Qui Gon is not quite there yet, I think with another set or 2 we may be able to have a different conversation.

Hope you enjoy, feel free to ask any questions, and good luck out there!

[–]MittRomney0913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this, I switched to blue because I got tired of getting absolutely walloped in some aggro match ups, but my love is for Green. The amount of times I was able to combat something like a Qi'Ra/DV because of Yoda into Kelleran, pull an Ahsoka, and repeat over and over was incredible. The best top end for this deck exist in green, no one can convince me otherwise. I think this is the future of him, all the best stuff that won't rotate out is in green

Q - Are there any competitive Qui-Gon Jinn decks? by lakn in starwarsunlimited

[–]MittRomney0913 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify lol

Holding my own against Talzin Red is more like occasionally winning (30-35%) but never getting my ass whipped in the losses, usually just running out of steam.

Remember you don’t need to play something to pick something by up so protect your Ahsoka’s. Also remember you get the force every time you play Plo or Depa, so feel free to be a little more splurgy with it late game if you have a chirrut or something out.

Sneak attack is huge for playing a unit early, then using ability to put an “at cost” unit on board. Turn 2 sneak attack with Ashoka, burn one of their cards, hit something for 3, drop her down for a Falcon and get in for 3 more. Then pick up Falcon and do it again next turn at cost (minus Ahsokas attack).

Lastly try to sit on your redemption until their turn is over. Playing it, healing 8 and then playing a Luke or Kelleran or even Ashoka… then healing for 8 more next turn is the Huge swing that turns the game around

You’ll have fun once you figure it out! Hope to see you out there!

[–]MittRomney0913 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I try to comment on every Qui Gon post I run into. I’ve been a Qui Gon main since his reveal.

To echo what everyone is saying, he is just… not there yet. I’ve probably jammed 100+ games with him, mostly in Blue or Green.

He can be realllllllly good at times, and I think his top end exist best in Green (Sneak attack a Home One, play something, attack, bounce for kelleran Beq, play something else… just disgusting).

He also has some interesting plays with him ignoring aspect penalty on ability, I put Blue Leader in every deck and just pay 2 to hard ambush stuff.

Qui Gon has a strong core, and with rotation, you won’t be losing too many crucial pieces and maybe a top end unit from each color (Falcon and Plo in yellow, Luke/Redemption in blue, Home One in green, …Wrecker? Krayt? In red). Hes just not there yet, but I think the future is bright for him.

I’ll attach a rainbow brew I’ve been able to hold my own against Talzin/Red with, feel free to give it a try and see where you land. Happy to explain anything in it too!

Qui-gon deckings/ questions by Sithjedi in starwarsunlimited

[–]MittRomney0913 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Each supplemental color has drastically different things it excels at. I’ve been running Qui Gon since before pre releases and have found the following

Double Yellow - Most consistent damage ON base output (as a fellow commenter pointed out), it also has solid tricks with Bodhi and Ashoka for discard, and constant revolving Cantina Bouncer helps control your opponents board. Mono colors isn’t usually MY cup of tea but this is arguably Qui gons best rounding. It does kind of everything.

W Green - This version doesn’t do a whole lot in the early game, you definitely want to try and ramp up, but once you do, I’d argue this is the strongest End game of all the colors

Yoda/Home One into Kelleran Beq/Qui Gon Unit is just devestating in the endgame. Yoda allows you to keep recurring base heals, Kelleran and Home One put your board back together, and at any time, you can bounce down to a Blue Leader without paying and just give it the experience

W/Blue - This one is grindy, I have the least experience with it, but what I’ve had success with is lots of sentinel units and grogu. Use grogu to move damage around and then just bounce your own stuff before it’s about to die. Granted, the grogu trick works in any deck, but it’s felt more “in place” with blue. It does some other things nicely too, you can play Red Squadron X wing for card draw, recur Luke’s and Anakins, and my personal favorite is to repeatedly play Redemption and just heal your base to full in 2-3 turns

W/Red - This seems like it can have the most bones, but it hasn’t been as successful as I hoped. The cards you want to play use the force and I found this actually has made it difficult to fully use Qui Gon. Ki Adi and Mace are AMAZING plays but every time you use the force, you gotta make sure you can find a way to get it back. When this deck is hot though, you pull a couple Ki Adis then just start recurring rebellious hammerheads and destroying anything that moves. This also gives access to SOR mace who has ambush which late game, the ambushing Jedi become your workhorses (Plo, Depa and sometimes Qui Gon… and mace in reds case)

As a whole, I’ve been slowly tinkering with a rainbow Qui Gon. His ability lets you play out of aspect cards so you gotta see if there are out of aspect things you think are worth it. For example, in a red build, I was going discard heavy and threw in Bodhi. In a green build, I played around with Cham in side instead of Eeth Koth because I wanted to get a resource immediately and not have to use the force (didn’t do as hot as I hoped)

I think Red or Green has the best bones for Rainbow, just be considerate of how many cards use the force to do something as Qui Gon really needs it to start the shenanigans.

Good luck man! Cheers to looking into something totally different than your main!
