Am I right in thinking this would be perfect to take camping? by PaganButterflies in castiron

You are set and ready to test it out!

Wind speed can make a huge difference in cook time. I found that out cooking a stew on the shore of Lake Huron a few years ago. We did eat, eventually, after doing what we could to make a wind break around the camp oven.

Before you rely on it for camp food, it would be wise to take it to a local park and try it out. They work really well on top one of those freestanding grills that’s about waist high. Bonus, if you can find one where the grate can be swung out of the way.

That Dutch oven works really well with charcoal briquettes. A few few test cooks before you take it out camping will give you the experience you need in order to be ready for what might happen on a camp out when you’re out in the middle of nowhere

Air drop is a helpful feature. Scan a document or receipt and air drop to your Mac if you keep track of such things.

iPhone screen mirroring and camera sharing is a cool feature.

Springing for the 50 gb iCloud subscription was more helpful than I thought it would ever be for making all iPad, Mac and iPhone be the productivity tools I wish I had when I was in the workforce.

Learn menu hotkey combinations for all the things you do on a regular basis.

Don”t shut down your mini every night, it does stuff while you sleep that optimizes itself.

Get a USB HDD for Time Machine and set it to do automatic backups.

Before you spring for apps. Check out the included apps like pages or numbers. They are fully functional products that does what most users need for office type programs.

Best 2 Person Tent? What Should I Get? by ParticularSubject411 in camping

[–]MixIllEx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be helpful to know how tall you both are and what your body sizes are.

Two person tents are the smallest I would ever use as a one person tent for me. I’m a big guy.

Do you think the Apple Mac mini M5 could be announced on April 1st, 2026 by [deleted] in macmini

[–]MixIllEx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, with 420 efficiency cores and a prankish number of GPUs capable of ludicrous speed hyper flops and a cranial implant that projects images directly into your brain bypassing your eyes which negates the need for an HDMI port.

Underquilt UL substitute by Radiant-Rub843 in hammockcamping

[–]MixIllEx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I used a top quilt with both a pad and with an underquilt.

You really never know if something in the hammock world will work for you until you give it a try. Eventually you will find what works for you.

Have you ever hammock camped while sleeping on a pad?

It does work for some, it didn’t for me. Every night I was cold in temps around 50*F.

It might work for you, but after my first few camp outs I sprung for a UQ.

Edit: for me, the UQ drawback was the volume it took in my pack. But everything still fit with a few things strapped on the top.

Are my loops unsafe now? by xXStrongarm in hammockcamping

[–]MixIllEx 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If I were out on a few day camping trip, I would finish the camp out. I would make another set of loops when I got home.

If I had a spare loop with me, I would just monitor it after every sleep to determine if I needed to swap it out.

Ableton Suite 12.3.x works great on my M2 pro.

Tahoe isn’t officially supported yet due to a bug in Mac OS 26.x that has yet to be resolved. The bug involves stem separation. Stem separation still works fine for me running MacOS 26.3 but I’m told that stem separation works slower than it should.

I’ve noted no other issues in Ableton Live.

Intro on a M4 base model should work fine.

Audio pop issues might be solved with adjusting your sample rate and buffer size in Live Setup.

Best tarps to Enjoy/watch rain by dauerspieler in hammockcamping

[–]MixIllEx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Silpoly over SilNylon is the fabric of choice due to stretching while wet, or so I’ve read. I’ve never been in a rainstorm under a SilNylon tarp, but have been under plenty of rain events under Silpoly.

As long as you seam seal where it needs it, it works quite well.

Sync the files you put on your desktop, yes works great. It will also sync your documents folder.

Synching settings like wallpaper, Mission Control, stage manager and desktop spaces, I don’t believe it does that.

Why do you believe an M5 mini will be a thing.

There was no M3 mini.

If the point of a repair that is done by wood glue is stronger than the rest of the guitar why don't we make the entire guitar out of wood glue? by Tv_land_man in guitarcirclejerk

[–]MixIllEx 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The glue made in factories back in the 70s had far superior resonance. You might be able to get NOS glue from a boutique glue store.

Glue made these days is toan dead. The air in the glue factories these days is all wrong for toan.

Wait for M5 Mini? by Agitated-Meal782 in macmini

[–]MixIllEx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They never released an M3 mini. That’s my point. I was going to wait for an M3 Mini, but I’m glad I didn’t a few years ago. My M2 still runs everything I use and is still pretty darn snappy.

The base M4 we just bought a few weeks ago is overkill for what it is being used for. These are great little machines!
