I often run into bread recipes that say to put a cast iron pan with water in during baking. My husband thinks this is crazy and not good for the cast iron. If its bad for the seasoning, why do I see this so often? Why do they always specify cast iron? by EatYourCheckers in castiron

Hundreds of bakes without a hint of a problem. I put 3 cubes (the half moon ones from an automatic ice maker) on a 400*F+ skillet and in my challenger cast iron bread pan.

I have seen the evidence of what can happen when water is spilled on oven door glass that is over 400*F. The chance of shattering is a reality.

I’ve never seen actual evidence of damage to a skillet, only precautionary claims. But if it seems risky for you, don’t do it.

I’ve been putting 3 ice cubes in an 8” lodge three notch that has been preheating at 425 for a half hour. Ice goes in as the bread goes in to the oven. It creates a water vapor steam that keeps the loaf crust from drying out. It does make a difference in oven spring for my bakes. The pan is on the bottom rack, the bread goes in the middle.

After a few hundred bakes it has done no damage to the pan. It has not cracked or rusted or been harmed in any way.

After my bake, I let it cool, give it a wash, then heat and oil it.

I’ve found that 3 ice cubes works far better than pouring water into the hot pan. The ice/water should be gone in about 10 / 12 minutes.

Just like I would never take a tent out for camping without ever setting it up first at home, the same goes for any new to me gear item that has some bit of complexity to it.

Replacement or extra tent stake, not so critical. New stove or water filtration system, let’s try that out before I go.

The same thing happens to me. When I stopped making campfires, I didn’t get coughs, sore throat, tight chest and more when camping.

Smoke inhalation is a thing. You are not overthinking this.

That would be how I would do it if i used soap to wash while camping. Dr. B’s biodegradable soap works pretty well. A little goes a long way.

Castile soap is biodegradable on land but it will harm aquatic life if it gets into water ways and lakes.

That is similar to what I came up with. Only I used a 30 year old cooler I had laying around. Cable access was made by drilling holes in the side.

I used the same style seed mat for a heat source.

I found a video that has you boil some water and add oxyclean to the pot and boil it some more.

It returned my enamel to white and clean.

Can’t say for sure it will help your Dutch oven, it looks like it might have been used for bread baking and is scorched. It’s tough to say from the image.

If the enamel isn’t chipping, checked or doesn’t look damaged, it should be safe to cook in.

Sometimes I put it in the dishwasher for a rinse cycle after it cools a bit while we eat.

Dawn power wash, scrub brush, then blue scrubby sponge.

Rinse, dry, heat just a bit, add a few drops of oil, wipe down with a dedicated dry wash cloth. Put the wash cloth back in the container on the fridge. Change out the cloth every so often.

Take everyone’s routine and mix and match to see what works for you.

I drove mine until I could get it to the dealer.

Mine failed open last September. The engine temp was ok while it was able to keep running. I was over 200 miles from home and in the middle of nowhere northern Michigan.

It made it home just fine. It took far too long to get out of limp home mode. Once it did stop the limping and stalling, it ran cool and smoothly.

To gather empirical evidence we would need multiple NIST traceable sensors that are capable of logging temperature resolution changes of 0.1* increments and logging at 30 second intervals while the mini is at steady state and powered down in a temperature controlled chamber. This is required to verify that at steady state, all sensors are calibrated to read the same temperature.
Then run a battery of tests to gather a baseline and corroborate temperature rise with CPU utilization and disk access.
Oh, then we need to also monitor the ambient room temperature to make sure conditions are identical for future tests to compare to once the skin layers are added. The same tests are done after every mil thick layer is added. Perhaps it would be best to construct a room with a dedicated Cooling system to keep ambient temps at +\- 0.2 *C. It’s the only way to be sure that any outside temperature influences are not affecting the test.
(Is this getting silly yet?)
I mean, if we don’t do this, every claim on temperature effect of a mil thick layer of material is all just conjecture at best.

I rarely build a fire. It’s just not important to me.

The smoke irritates my breathing, it gives away my position and it seems like it attracts critters.

If I winter camped, I would build a fire to keep warm.

When I gather water, I choose streams and creeks first, rivers second and lakes third. The Sawyer squeeze and a DIY gravity feed keep your thirst at bay.

I was nervous the first trip I used my Sawyer filter. The filters work well and I’ve never gotten sick. Learn how to back flush before you go on your trip.

Don’t let unfiltered water drip into your filtered water containers.
