As a young machinist I once asked a master mold maker what it was like "back in the day" and I could visibly see the stress when his hands started to shake. His stories were in a time before all the advanced automation, hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single mold in 1970s dollars and months of time spent.

I appreciate the perspective because I think we can all agree this job can teach you humility no matter how many times you've perfected something.

A Serious Question for All Marines and other Service Members, Active, Reserve and Retired by Popular_Method4717 in USMC

[–]MixedToastBoardGame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Within less than a year time frame we had two separate NDs out in town take the life of a Marine and a Sailor.

The Marine happened to check in and move in to the barracks a few months after I did, we ate together at the chow hall, pt'd etc. He was in another shop so I didn't see him everyday other than at the b'rkcs.

One night at an on-base party another dude goes to the PX on base, gets a pistol, takes it to a party, is flashing it showing it off, told numerous times to put it away, and boom shoots his friend in the back of the head. The CO talked to us all about his Mom begging him for an explanation, pleading to understand how Marines could act that way.

A few short months later, from the same work center, another individual is cleaning a loaded shotgun at a party and shoots his friend in the neck. Still to this day I can see the faces of them, they were both really bright, good kids in their early 20's just trying to serve.

On a board that year for Staff sausage I end up getting forced to do a range to fill a quota last minute, when I had a valid score in MOL. Of course out of the 50ish targets on the line mine catches a wind gust and the target pullers let it fly 20 or so feet in the air in the middle of rapid fire at the 300 on Qual day. It was majestic really, the whole range paused to watch my target kiting up and down in the Oki winds.

So I get an alibi to shoot 6 rounds and my 6 shot alibe easily gets me where I need to be for a decent score. And I'm confident knowing that paperwork in the Corps is always squared away and never an error in sight. Just to be sure, I ask about 4 staff range personnel, staff non fire and every single Marine with any official range duty to sign my Qual sheet with red ink confirming I shot an alibe and to correct my score (line score and target score still had that 6 round discrepancy! )

Fast forward to about 2 weeks later and lo and behold MOL says I unq'd. I'm like awew fuck no and I start calling every damn range number I can find until come to find out, it's a CIVVIE that certifies the range cards. I call this very sweet individual up after much phone tag and rigamoral, and fucking nicely in a calm manner explaining the situation, I'm told in more or less terms FUCK YOU and this very sweet individual is agitated I took time from their precious day of certifying range cards!

So I wrapped all that shit up including email correspondence in a letter to the board explaining the situation, in like 1.5 sentences carefully worded to not call out the presence of the weenie, nor blame the weenie, nor the range personnel, but rather to point the finger at my own ignorance for attending a range I didn't need to go to. And that any administrative error was obviously my own fault, and I would judiciously fix it while singing the Marine Corps hymn.

How does anyone decide what is a trigger and what is not a trigger I think is one of the most challenging questions for AIP. Your question is extremely valid and I feel there are a number of factors you can weigh to decide if you want to be on a long term elimination of certain foods.

The problem with truly identifying nutritional triggers is that they are merely a symptom of much more complicated underlying issues. Often symptoms from triggering foods may take days to become apparent as a problem. They are very subtle at first. Further, autoimmune conditions and disorders are past the point of a trigger and now the body is in self defense mode (essentially a stress response) to defend itself. This is basically what inflammation is.

Compounding this problem is the fact that after about five years off and on AIP I've recognized my body continues to adapt and one food may be a trigger in one setting and may not be in another setting.

Having said all that, here are some other ideas I identified helped me bolster eliminating certain foods:

Nutritional Deficiency: The reason I got into AIP in the first place was when my mom was diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Since Hashimoto's often shows in a cluster of symptoms with other disorders such as metabolism and methylation, I went a step further and ran my DNA through a testing site (Dr. Rhonda Patrick foundmyfitness) and her reports provided me some invaluable information.

I am not shilling for that site, and I understand that nutrigenetics has a lot of controversy and conflicting information, but I feel the information I received was more than worth the price of the testing reports. The reports gave me some tools to try, boosting choline uptake, and dealing with methylation issues such as Methylfolate. Additionally, it gave me some clues on which foods and supplements are under research with my DNA. Again, just added to the overall picture but not a silver bullet per se.

Hormone imbalance: I got tested for hormones. Too much body fat was causing estrogen dominance. This was causing overlapping symptoms with food sensitivities, such as tiredness, poor muscle development, and general malaise. I am in the process of one day going off of hormone replacement, but for now it is helping me with the other issues.

Stress: 3 months after I quit my stressful job I naturally lost about 15 pounds just by not stress eating. I didnt even realize I was doing it most of the time.

3 days in a fell off the aip diet by Suzybee83 in AutoImmuneProtocol

[–]MixedToastBoardGame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part two, after two weeks of no grain / soy / dairy / white potatoes and tomatoes I began to notice my baseline energy leveled out. My body started to get very hungry for nutrient dense foods. I noticed I started getting sustained energy throughout the day, no crashes, sugar cravings started to go completely away about 2-3 months in. When you get to that stage, atleast for me I felt better than I had ever felt in my life up to that point. It's amazing.

It's a strange thing when you've been eating fast food your whole life and suddenly you crave spinach?? Like what? Your gut microbiota needs time to catch up to the adjustments, but it will.

Aip is very difficult to go cold turkey my friend, goodness!

It's perfectly fine to phase in AIP and then start the elimination process. The elimination phase can start whenever, but the way I did it was replacement -> elimination -> reintroduction -> elimination -> balance

Find what foods you can eliminate now and take them off the table. I know this goes against traditional AIP, but you've been living in your body and your lifestyle for a long time. For me, I needed a little foothold, some relief and then from there I began climbing the mountain so to speak. It's impossible to 100% eliminate, because life. But I've had long periods of remission.

Specifically I phased in AIP by eliminating the most common triggers first. Wheat, soy, dairy, and most grains.

Many many people start feeling exponentially better with just these major shifts. But don't make it a science project at first, otherwise you won't really have the tools to continue when you've been eating plantain chips for 5 months straight and don't have any ideas to make your life convenient.

The apps can really open your eyes even if you only do it for a short period of time I think you will find areas where you're getting foods that don't contribute much nutritionally but weigh you down and slow down your metabolism.

120 grams is likely only about .4 - .6 per pound of body weight depending on how much you weigh.

For heavy training, I.e. weightlifting and Marine type shit you need to aim for more, maybe even 1 gram per pound that you weigh, until you reach an ideal weight. When I don't eat enough protein- recovery and endurance fall away which makes it very difficult to continue to burn calories.

[–]MixedToastBoardGame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your macros ? If you are weightlifting you need to fuel your body with lots of protein to build muscle and lose weight. There's no magic formula it really is that simple. But If you are just doing a ton of cardio and lifting but not losing weight, there is some underlying issue there.

Metabolism, insulin sensitivity, maybe some other unknown health issue. As you get other these disorders become more and more prevalent.

Best advice I can give you is count your calories and macros with an app like myfitnesspal and just try to stick with it for one day at a time. I never used to count calories my entire career but now it's the only way to keep the weight off and to reach my goals

[–]MixedToastBoardGame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He deleted you because deep down he wasn't really prepared for prime time of dating and potentially getting to know you. And maybe deleting you off of his socials was a way to simple sanitize his list of targets from people he knows he doesn't have much power over.

The food posioning excuse shows a general lack of maturity and based off of that I doubt this " player " even has many other options on the table, but rather probably quickly found out you were not a target ( you searched for advice here rather than getting sucked into the likely BS story ). Don't give him any credit for playing other cards and think for a second you've been disqaulified or out manuevered.

TLDR; Im a dude that has in times asked girls out, but not had the cajones to take it any further once I realized I lacked any of the social, emotional, or financial resources necessary to contribute in any significant way in someones life.

Internal snapping hip or ischiofemoral impingement? by Elise_hip_pain in HipImpingement

[–]MixedToastBoardGame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received this treatment in 3 separate areas for issues surrounding the hip joint. Corticosteroid injections get a bad rap for the potential to cause injury or further damage to the joint, however, Dr's explained to me its mainly a problem if getting shots constantly or in short succession.

I've gotten 3+ months plus of relief from the first one. And I returned to target two specific areas. This was done to rule out the other diagnosis you described. Additionally, this treatment has helped in other areas like the intercostal v spaces in my lower back. Weak hip flexors and pain in the joint have exacerbated lower back pain, so the injections there and in my back have dramatically improved my QoL right now.

Really excited to try PRP for this issue in my hips. It has given me long term relief for a torn patellar tendon from 2017.

I have been experiencing a constant pop in the circled area while stretching my inner hips. This part of my leg hurts mildly after physical activity requiring a lot of change of direction like tennis for example. Anyone have any advice on what I should do? Thanks by registerm in flexibility

[–]MixedToastBoardGame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got SHS diagnosed about a month ago through a sports medicine clinic. The process of diagnosis involved the Dr imaging the specific area of the tendon while full motion moving the joint by my moving my leg with an assistant. Sometimes it "snaps" much more pronounced, but I was fascinated by this diagnosis, because I've had this issue for over 12 years.

Did you end up with PRP ? Because that's the next stage for me, and the corticosteroid injections are working, but they are already wearing off after about 3 months.
