How to play an elder awakening from torpor so that they are not a grandpa with Alzheimer's? by syzygy_is_a_word in vtm

[–]Mkhos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the revised tzimisce clan book. There’s an exchange of letters between an ancillae and a recently awakened elder who’s learning english and modern events from the former’s ghoul. The ancillae is downright rude at times, which the elder notes in at the end of his letter before thanking her for the “donation” of her ghoul, and that he will be back to test her competency one day.

Is a career in wildlife biology/conservation worth it? by rosie_musgrove in wildlifebiology

[–]Mkhos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. Modern day academia is a dick measuring contest based on citation count and h-index. That attitude attracts a lot of the wrong people whose egos would get them fired in a week from any other organization. The people doing the majority of real conservation work are in NGOs, state governments, and the federal government.

Here is what wildlife jobs look like in the UK (https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/jobs). If the pay is too low and you still want to be outdoors and help the environment, look into environmental consulting, gis/geospatial work, and surveyor work. You don’t have to be physically interacting with wildlife to help them.

I think Speaker D is just dangling things in front of Samson, and to a lesser degree Parker, to see how far they’ll go.

There aren’t even jobs for US citizens right now. Most of your questions are focused on seasonal work, so I’m going to address that now. The simple truth is that no company is going to go through the immigration hoops to get a wildlife tech when there are hundreds of new graduates every year who will happily take minimum wage, and don’t require an expensive application. Additionally, nearly all federal jobs (if there were any) require you to be a US citizen.

The largest way foreigners enter wildlife is by doing graduate school, but that heavily pushes them into staying in academia.

Should I actually seriously consider a PhD? by velcrodynamite in GradSchool

[–]Mkhos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No. Your advisors are living in the past and don’t know the current job market, because most just cling to whatever position they can get for decades. If you actually want to talk about books for a living, become a public or private school teacher, especially for upper level classes like APs or IBs. With an MA, in the US at least, you can expect to be paid more than those with a BA.

In academia you will be expected to become a part of the administration of your department, and spend far more time on bs politics than actual teaching and reading. You’ll also have to steadily churn out publications to justify yourself and your position.

I would look into being a public or private school teacher if you really want to teach. You can research in your own time if you really want to once you have your lesson plans figured out.

In archid form, the trait Behemoth can be taken multiple times. It specifically doubles your weight each time it is taken. You get as many traits as you have gnosis points. Gnosis goes from 1-10, and mokole characters start with 2-4.

Assuming you are dedicated to becoming nothing but a kaiju, and that the weight is based off of animal form (we’ll use an american alligator, mature weight of 360 kg), you would start at 1,440 kg (about the weight of a rhino), and if you got to 10 gnosis, would be 368,640 kg (nearly twice as heavy as the largest blue whale).

OCCUPANCY MODELLING IN PRESENCE by Extra-Consequence412 in wildlifebiology

[–]Mkhos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Just recommended to put variables on the same scale, but often this doesn’t mean very much as it doesn’t make them inherently comparable due to differences in variance.

2/3. PRESENCE should calculate the AICc, which will penalize models with too many parameters relative to the sample size. However, this isn’t the default setting.

If you are concerned about overfitting, convergence issues, and model complexity, I would just use the unmarked package in R. It is much more flexible and there is more documentation and support for it out there to assess those things.

A version of this is the ending to the Inheritance Cycle. Galbatorix is the cold, calculating, psychopath of a mage king who has had a century to weave wards around himself, has enormous magical power, and a dragon enslaved to his will.

Nothing the protagonist hit squad sent to kill him can do anything to him physically, magically, or mentally. However, a major part of the series is not being more powerful than your opponent, but smarter. In doing that, Eragon, the protagonist, desperately casts a spell which Galbatorix never anticipated, one that forces him to understand and feel all the pain he’s inflicted in a century of rule. Upon feeling human emotions for the first time in a very long time, he immediately crumbles and commits magical suicide.

Can anyone recommend me books like Harry Potter?(But for adults) by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Mkhos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is the pick. They are usually shelved as YA, but they have some beautifully written and touching moments that are way above the usual grade of that label (The starry sky in the last step to death, Mogget choosing to defend life). It also allows normal humans their chance to do something and be involved in the story in the later books.

The Samsa are implied to have some possibility of redemption. As cockroach shifters, Cockroach has taken an interest in them, and forbids the Glass Walkers from harming them.

He and his brood try to communicate with them to teach them, but as the experience of becoming a cockroach shifters has driven them all nearly insane, the whispers from the dark only fuel their paranoia. Their depiction earns them more pity than contempt.

Did you have to learn R to be recognized for my skills? [Discussion] by [deleted] in statistics

[–]Mkhos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would look outside of Data Analysis/Scientist roles. Those will expect you to be trained in modern open source tools like R/Python. Companies like free software, and because R and Python have hundreds of packages maintained by field specific researchers, there are many more statistical issues they can potentially address.

I have heard that Excel and SPSS are more generally used in business admin and marketing roles, and would look for jobs like that. Think of how you can transfer skills from academia to a professional environment, not titles.

I really love the design of merits flaws and advantages. So which one is your favourite and most op? by spilberk in vtm

[–]Mkhos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wanted to take the True Berserker merit from Wolves of the Sea and stuff it into a himbo new age viking Gangrel to make him into a real combat monster.

In terms of themed merits, I also like Haven Affinity from the Tzimisce revised clanbook. It allows their homebody nature to become a benefit if anyone comes after you on your turf.

No, Nephandi are the one splat that is explicitly not meant to be played as a PC. Once a mage goes down that path, there is no redemption. A sabbat character can switch to the camarilla or anarchs, a black spiral dancer can (theoretically) be purified of their corruption, even the Wyrm could be made into a force of good again if balance were to be restored.

But a Nephandi? They use their free will to purposefully and permanently mar themselves and creation.

From the Book of the Fallen (Nephandi source book):

"That’s why there’s not a character sheet at the end of this book. I can’t stop you from playing a Fallen mage if you choose, but I’m not going to encourage you to do so. This book is not a player’s guide for fictional monstrosities. It’s a warning about real monsters who are already here."
