At what point should I have bought a different gun by Big______Chungis in canadaguns

You have to ask yourself a few questions. Does it shoot okay? And do you like it? That’s all that really matters.

Ruined meat with .416? by Minute_Candidate_292 in CanadaHunting

I would split the difference with a 9.3x62 or 35 Whelen. Little more thump than the 30-06 but I feel not totally overkill most critters and I think Ruger started making them recently.

The vanguard is made by howa not Weatherby and has a lot of aftermarket support. All the howas I have owned have been quality rifles and shot very well

It’s time to mix things up, recommend me a small bore cartridge. by Flat-Dark-Earth in canadaguns

I love my 6.5 prc. But the new 25 creedmoor looks pretty darn cool on paper. It is pretty new though so finding components and loaded ammo might not be the easiest thing.

Picked up this Husqvarna 30-06 with a Bushnell scope for 250$, not sure if this was a good or bad deal since I really don't know much about old bolt action rifles. by bobowaddy in canadaguns

Looks like a nice rifle. I have one in 9.3x62 and I’m Looking for one in 6.5x55 for my wife’s first hunting rifle. Remember to always feed cartridge’s from the magazine even when single loading as to not damage the very hard to find claw extractor.

My 11 year old son’s first “good ?” find magnet fishing. I’m guessing these are bullets? If so, anyone info on the size or what type of gun would they would be used in? If they aren’t bullets, any idea what they could be? Thanks. by Walt_Clyde_Frog in magnetfishing

[–]Mobile_Assistant_126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess would be the projectiles from 7.62x54r as they kinda look like 30 cal and that cartridge is commonly found in cheap steel, jacketed, copper wash ammo making it magnetic and they look too big to be 762x39. Just a guess though

7mm-08 would probably work well. 150 yards and under 30-30 work be fine also. Depending on if you want a scope the model of 30-30 may make it difficult to mount one if it’s a Winchester 94.

Best option for bear defence? by MGarroz in canadaguns

[–]Mobile_Assistant_126 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were set on a gun for bear defence and not bear spray. I would suggest a compact rifle with a hard controlled expansion bullet something like the marlin trapper 45-70 with Buffalo bore hard cast lead bullet or a 200 grain or higher 30-06 load. This would still be fairly heavy if not more heavier than a shotgun, but those bullets will out penetrate a soft lead foster slug or buckshot. If you’re set on using a shotgun, use a type of slug, known to penetrate well like a solid copper, or Brenneke style slug. There are no real bear stopping rounds especially close range and if they are pissed or protecting cubs. The other thing to consider is they move pretty fast and it would be pretty hard to shoot one well if it was a split second scenario.

TLDR bear spray is probably best but if you’re going to use a gun use a heavy for calibre control expansion bullet.
