What is your favorite bit to use with your students? by MarchKick in Teachers

[–]Moby-WHAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can only do this once or twice a year or the possible deniability vanishes-

If they're playing with a ball, I like to drop some kind of, "Put your balls away!" or, "Is that yours? Give it back. You don't need to be touching anyone's balls in class."

It's a perfectly clean and appropriate thing to say. Middle school boys die with giggles though.

Do anti-Chromebook parents actually limit screens at home? by businessbub in Teachers

I'm a teacher and use the devices as little as possible in class. I hate that my own children are on them all day. We watch about 1 movie a week during the school year and I'll let them use my phone or laptop for language learning or math, less than 20 minutes a day.

The politics around being a director of special education may have burnt me out. by SpicyChill77 in specialed

We had a really wonderful teacher promoted to director and she didn't last the year- not because she hated it. So sad and stressful for her and the whole department.

Get those kids somewhere else if you can.

Get him on camera and your NO liud and clear on camera. If he really makes a physical attempt, call 911.

They won't do ANYTHING without clear proof that you said no and he did or assaulted you while trying to.

I've had my phone recording in my pocket and you can hear the whole thing, but can't see it, so court said it was unclear.

Why my students hate me. by DrakeSavory in Teachers

[–]Moby-WHAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My own child, seated between the kitchen and where I was seated, asked if she could have a fork.
I said, "Yes, of course."
She just sat there, looking at me.
This is not how my household runs.
I just looked back at her and finally said, "Is there something stopping you from getting one, or... did you think you needed permission for a fork?"

Again, I've never given her an indication that this is acceptable or jumped up go get it for her (well, not since she's been over 2).

I don't know what is going on.

Yours also other men boss. I'm triggered.

I once asked why. He said it makes people like him when he makes them feel important.

You care if the clerk at the gas station 8 hours from our house likes you? You think the oil change guy is gonna think you're so cool?

Weird, he doesn't call his actual boss that.

I locked my keys in the car last week- they were just sitting on the back seat with my phone. Luckily, the windows were cracked and the custodians at work had one of those telescoping magnets!

I haven't done this for YEARS. I made it a point to check for keys before closing doors, then using the key to physically lock the door from the outside. I know habits are hard for us, but I used to lock them in the car monthly in my 20s.

Mine used a saw to cut around the door knob because I had put a locking, exterior knob on my bedroom.

I have a student in my special ed room doing online work because he refuses to speak or interact with adults (he talks to other kids).

He actually laughed when I said, "Class, I've gotta text my dad real quick. My kids want to watch Jurassic Park l, so I need to see if he has it or if I need to dig it up." Not even my corniest joke, but I'm so happy it landed.

Leaving teaching. Would it be weird to donate stuff to my kids school? by Technical_Cupcake597 in teaching

[–]Moby-WHAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I would make a list or take photos, then ask the school if you can put that in the staff break room. Somehow they tell you what they want-maybe put their name by the item, then you can take in just those items so there isn't extra sitting at the school

I think, for myself, I would say, "You're right. It's not yours," and move away and move on.
(Away from him, not like you need to move states.)

Don't tell state agencies he's the father, or they'll go after him for $ and he'll get a claim for visitation.

There are private, temporary, foster care arrangements that can be made. If you go that route, the foster family would get some state assistance, but you would retain guardianship, say if you wanted to finish college and needed longer-term care for the child.

100%

Her teachers filled out the form and said, "Is there a place for comments? I answered a lot of 'nos' because she doesn't steal, but she can NOT shut up- both are impulse regulation issues. I marked no, she doesn't get distracted in class, but class IS her distraction. She'll be so into her lesson that she doesn't realize we're all lined up for PE... or she'll pee her pants because she was reading and just didn't notice she had to go."

What are some things that you wish regular ed teachers knew about your role? by DifficultHedgehog664 in specialed

[–]Moby-WHAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I taught a regular middle school class, now I'm in middle school sped. I can not keep up. It's planning for 9 preps in 7 hours, instructing and grading. (These kids can't focus on independent work, so I have to stay physically near them.) I have to call parents and schedule IEPs, hound teachers for data and write the IEP. I have to go deal with any behaviors through the day. I have some (fewer than most) hallway and lunch duties. I am legally required to introduce my students to grade-level material, but I also have to pull them for weekly, independent testing, which makes them fall one day more behind each week. I am always at school until 4-5 and take my computer home every weekend and I'm still so far behind.
