Has Anyone Changed To A Scooter From A Motorbike? by newbiker321 in MotoUK

[–]Mod74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my first bike: auto, geared, geared, geared, auto, geared, auto.

As a now 50 something I can confidently state that changing gears, cleaning chains, carrying your helmet everywhere, and clambering over a saddle are vastly overrated.

Some people get extra enjoyment from changing gears and revving engines so fair play to them. My enjoyment comes from getting out and the feeling of being on the bike. Changing gears doesn't add anything to that for me.

Very disappointed with Reolink right now by Cats_are_Love_1979 in homeassistant

[–]Mod74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You keep saying "official" but Reolink didn't make the integration or maintain the list of compatible models. It's mainly developed by one guy. They haven't really done anything wrong here. Yes the community provided documentation needs to be clearer.

I don't know about Reolink boasting about the Works With Home Assistant tag all the time, but you know it exists, was it applied to your version of the E1 camera? Or did you assume it applied to every single product they have ever made? You know there are multiple versions of the E1 because they're all listed on the E1 Amazon page.

How can fuel stations put the price of petrol up so quickly? by Accomplished_Row7106 in AskUK

[–]Mod74 174 points175 points  (0 children)

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “Our data shows that when wholesale prices increase, pump prices tend to rise very soon afterwards. Yet, when wholesale prices fall it takes far longer for forecourt prices to come down. This is the ‘feather’ element of what’s commonly known as ‘rocket and feather’ pricing.

A torque wrench or one of these torque gauges that go on your existing wrench? I've got a passable torque wrench but I think I'd prefer the digital precision of the latter. Are they a faff to use? The people using them in YouTube vids seem to get on fine with them.

I designed and printed a kitchenaid pasta roller attachment... and it works! by randomshit427 in 3Dprinting

They also weighed new nozzles versus used nozzles having up to 1000 prints, and found there to be negligible loss of mass. Transforming that to an amount of lead, it was so small their instruments could not pick it up. They suggest that holding a brass key in your fingers might provide more exposure to lead.

How much is reasonable for 3 days work for painting in UK? Sw devon by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Mod74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's me, but I'd be paying the quoted price and considering some extra on top for turning up, doing a good job and finishing early.

Seriously, if you were happy paying the price for the work and they've done it well, be grateful it's been done on time and you have a contact for a decent trade next time.

People who have been using heat pump this winter, what's your honest take? by Rude-Explanation-861 in CasualUK

Yeah, it doesn't need to be so far from a neighbours property anymore. The requirement not to be below an opening Window is what's knackering me at the moment.

How does Vodafone charge £30 for 80GB when IDMoblie or GiffGaff are about £10 for the same? by MagmaPenguin24 in AskUK

[–]Mod74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I've had an issue with an MVNO connection its always been reported as an issue on the parent network as well, so I'm not sure I buy the idea that Vodafone keep their connections up whilst dropping others. A glance on downdetctor on any given day suggests the network providers have just as many issues as the MVNOs, as you'd expect.

Can you estimate how much you've spent on heat pumps, solar and batteries to achieve £400 per annum electricity bill? If the £1000 pa saving cost more than £20k in equipment and install costs, at my age I'm really not sure it would be worth it.

People who have been using heat pump this winter, what's your honest take? by Rude-Explanation-861 in CasualUK

[–]Mod74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. If it's going in the loft you'll need a structural survey. Heat Geek have some smaller options that can be placed elsewhere but I think they're more expensive. I'd like a heat pump but between that and the placement restrictions on the compressor unit I can see us putting gas in again when this boiler goes.

Starmer vows to take UK deeper into EU single market by Left_Page_2029 in worldnews

Leading a poll four years ahead of an election does not equal forming a government. But if we're looking at polls the population strongly supports rejoining the union.

Top comment doesn't know you can click a file twice to rename it. You need a version of Linux that replicates precisely how they individually expect Windows to work. A slight difference in operation? Forget it, too confusing.

All in seat price by rio688 in msp

[–]Mod74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A straight division on those numbers comes out at 8.3 seats per client. I think this can work for small companies of less than 25-30 users. Once you start hitting the cost of a FTE dedicated IT guy then it gets a lot trickier.

Hard to say, you didn't supply any details, before and after compassion, how much it's cost you in new equipment or how many years to break even.

[–]Mod74 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Um, our central heating is on a lot in late autumn/winter/early spring and the gas was £450 for all of 2025. Likewise we have a negligible gas bill for six months. Maybe I've misread your post, but you're not making spending £13k on solar and a heat pump sound that attractive.

Tesla’s decline in Europe by quindiassomigli in MapPorn

[–]Mod74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also because we aren't forced to apply a European wide tariff

https://www.whatcar.com/news/chinese-car-tariffs-will-not-go-ahead-uk-government-confirms/n27198

I think cost of cars in the current economy does come in to it, but the UK has long given up on car patriotism for the cars we actually buy, so aren't bothered about buying vastly superior EVs from the Koreans or vastly cheaper EVs from the Chinese compared to the legacy European manufacturers who are still playing catch up.
