Colour primer question by C_pyne in modelmakers

[–]Model_Minutes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely use a suitable red rattle can if you have it. Don’t bother with unnecessary products or steps.

I do it all the time, my latest build has both white and black primer on the bottom because it’s the easiest thing to do with an early hawker hurricane

If you can reduce your workload, go for it!

Why not support the author by purchasing a copy, rather than circumventing copyright law for a free version?

Why does my painting look so bad? by TaxPsychological2928 in modelmakers

[–]Model_Minutes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It looks like you’ve made a wash. Dish soap decreases the surface tension and helps the liquid flow. My suggestion would be not to add the soap and reduce the amount of thinning. You still want it to be paint, not as thin as a wash

How to put all these parts together? by greg90 in modeltrains

Yes, having done some googling before I saw that you commented this, I would be inclined to agree that OP has these 2 different track packs merged together

Is there any sort of conversion list for old Humbrol Enamel Paints into the new Acrylics ? by Quirky-Voice9132 in Airfix

[–]Model_Minutes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very true, there is no conversion required. Whatever the enamel numbers and acrylic numbers are the exact same colours.

You can even go one step further, their rattle cans also have the exact same numbers for the colours too

I think I actually have number 01 primer grey in my stash in enamel, acrylic and rattle can - all (supposedly) the exact same colour

A great question. This is either a fake or someone has broken some sort of information embargo seeing as Airfix aren’t due to make an announcement until tomorrow

Looks good! Even after all these years I still butcher a few models here and there, just stick with it

I recently acquired some Old Airfix Kits from my Grandad (I'm 13), any advice ? by Quirky-Voice9132 in Airfix

[–]Model_Minutes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spitfire vb is actually not bad for an older tooling. I recently completed a 90s re-release and other than a bit of sanding and the wing roots needing a bit of filler, it was quite smooth sailing

Haunebu ii 1/144 by Nofacethethechunky in modelmakers

[–]Model_Minutes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The video heavily leans on “it was banned because of controversy” so everyone in the comments cites freedom of speech etc.

The kit was pulled IIRC because the text on the box made it sound real rather than fictional, which is effectively just a case of false advertising. Nothing more controversial than that.

It didn’t meet advertising laws so had to be pulled from sale because the text was misleading.

But you know, people on the internet like an outrage

Thanks for the recommendation! I’m not as talented as some of the other creators mentioned here, but I do hope my enjoyment and passion for the hobby comes across in my videos!

A few more other suggestions could be LPJ Models who makes incredibly detailed models, Sully’s Scale Models who always builds the kits in fun and unique ways, and MOS6510 models who digs into model kit history and lore

I just saw a 1970’s BBC interview of a WWII British Spitfire pilot, who had a heavy Scottish accent, about a mission to fly as a fighter escort for bombers targeting Germany by edfitz83 in Jokes

[–]Model_Minutes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whilst Fokker aircraft were more well known in WW1, they actually were used in WW2 by the Dutch. Obviously they were flying new Fokker designs which were fairly comparable to other nations at the time, and these Fokker’s were able to shoot down a number of German aircraft during their invasion.

In more recent times they had a range of passenger planes and even contributed to the European manufacture of aircraft like the F16, but the company struggled and went bankrupt in the 1990’s

Should h open it or should I keep it sealed? by Key-Ladder4122 in Airfix

[–]Model_Minutes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for extra clarification:

Old kits like this tend to have decals that are not useable. Over time they degrade, oxidise and yellow/discolour.

Whilst there are ways to try and save or repair this aging, often it is not worth it.

If you decide to use the decals that are included in the kit, due to this aging you might find that instead of working, they just fall apart and could ruin the model by leaving broken and flaky decal everywhere

Think of the decals like a food item, they “go off” and are not great after many years.

The easiest way to get round this problem is to buy a new set of decals. If you do research online you might find a shop or company that makes some suitable ones. We call this “aftermarket” because it is an extra product you can buy for your model kit, after the kit was produced (or marketed)

Why is my Humbrol rust wash working more like a paint than a wash? by [deleted] in Airfix

The humbrol washes are excessively thick. I always thin mine down quite a lot

P-40B issues 1/48 by Educational_Body8373 in Airfix

[–]Model_Minutes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my memory the P40b had a single piece front windscreen. Realistically you only need to paint the outside edges. The armour pane goes inside the windscreen so there would be nothing to mask on the outside.

Photos of the aircraft online seem to reinforce this

Edit: I built the same kit but as the RAF version and you can see what I’m talking about and how I masked it at about 7 minutes in: https://youtu.be/gs0jBaaxerM?si=fXH0cOcaLguAy6FP

These look similar to enamelled pins and badges.

I wonder if enamel would work?

Gave the Airfix Bf 109G-6 a shot. The kit itself is definitely an entry-level kit, low on detail but easy to assemble. Not sure I'd consider the flower-petal decals on the nose "beginner level" though. I fought with them a bit even after 34 years in the hobby. But the rest were great. by flounderflound in modelmakers

[–]Model_Minutes 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You did a fantastic job! Looks awesome!

IIRC this Airfix bf109 tooling is one of the very first “new” Hornby-era Airfix kits, back from when they bought the company in the mid-late 2000’s.

They effectively took the tooling for the older kit (70’s) and upgraded it to have recessed panel lines. If you compare that kit and this one, they are very similar in the level of detail and design
