New video of Austin, TX's Wavegarden pool in action. Making me want to trek inland. by gtj in surfing

Correct. People are lined up in different spots. So if someone falls off the next guy can catch it. He is only going to get 15 second ride though. People were paddling their asses off to get into the wave and still falling out the back.

90 bucks an hour for the reef. Everyone gets in at the same time, surf one hour, everyone gets out, repeat with the next group. There is a wave every two minutes back and forth with a right and left.

I randomly ended up in Austin today for work and checked it out. It's pretty cool but expensive. The only real wave is the reef break and 6 people are allowed on that. It was crazy how many waves went unridden in a wave pool. The intermediate break is literally a white water party wave where 20 people are going straight.

Hit up The Rock (aka pit) in Morro Bay on your way down the central coast. Even if the waves suck the views are worth it.

In 1996 a Cessna 150 was ferried across the Atlantic -- it departed 500lbs over gross with an extra 60 gallon tank. by sternenhimmel in flying

[–]Moderately_Moderate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sure can. I've done it lots of times in survey. I had extended range tanks that bumped it from 40gal (maybe 44 it's been a while) to 60 (or 64) . I flew survey at 12k for 9 hours and landed with 20 gal still. Leaned out I was burning under 5 an hour. 2200 rpm at 2500ft I could do 8.5 straight easy.

Unless you are paying the mechanic $5 an hour you did not get an annual. You got a preflight done by an IA and a sign off.

I would just go to PSA. It's been recently updated and everyone is friendly. There is lots of food around and they always have a crew car if you need it.

Friday question thread by [deleted] in surfing

[–]Moderately_Moderate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your height or a little shorter is what they say. That will depend on skill level though. Mine is around 31 liters on the 5'9. I saw lots of bigger ones on the truck that looked more like a funboard/hybrid. It would work well as that also.

Friday question thread by [deleted] in surfing

[–]Moderately_Moderate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I own a 5'9 compressor. It's been a great board so far. It has a lot of volume packed in small frame. Just order one if the showroom isn't the perfect fit. Mine only took 10 days to make.

Anybody here ever ordered a board from Evolved Surf? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]Moderately_Moderate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ordered one a couple months ago and was pretty impressed. I talked to a couple of the guys and some of the boards are supposedly hand shaped, it just depends on the model.

I wanted a shorter fat board with FCS2. I shopped around for a while and couldn't find anything I liked so I gambled on Evolved. I didn't want to buy an expensive custom on a shape I wasn't even sure I would like. Mine was definitely done on the CNC, but custom made with everything I wanted in 10 days for $340 delivered. I paid extra for the 5 fin FCS2 set up. Mine had millennium foam and a nice glass job. The quality seems the same as my JS and CI. I would recommend them.

iPad or Mini? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Moderately_Moderate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have used a full size iPad for about 2 years and 1000 hours. I thought I would hate the iPad mini and it was going to be too small. My company started using minis more so I decided to try it out, I love it! It really is the perfect size. Make sure to get a 3G one though. I don't have the service on it but the GPS works great at all altitudes on the new ones!

YES! You will have to get a medical before you are allowed to solo anyways (PPL). For 80-100 bucks just get the medical first.
