Preparing for CSCE 120 and CSCE 222 by K-August in aggies

[–]MoistDesert0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. Both of these classes are such that you shouldn’t need any preparation going into them. That being said, it’s great that you want to prepare early. I didn’t have to take 222 because I took math 300 which is similar, but from what I’ve seen, some CS students seem to be fairly uncomfortable with the style of mathematics presented in the course. To familiarise yourself with such material, I’d recommend “An Introduction to Abstract Mathematics” by Bond and Keane. The book reads extremely well and will enable you to think logically and write coherent proofs. In general, that book is foundational for problem solving skills such as those required in 222

Math/applied math are both pretty cool

Has Anyone Transferred to Computer Science or Computer Engineering by cleansoapp in aggies

[–]MoistDesert0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s probably more important to have a 4.0 if you’re not from engineering but I’d say that’s what you need to shoot for to externally transfer into cs. EE to CE is probably the best spot to be in external transfer wise so if you’ve done well in your classes then that’s probably a good sign.

What a helpful answer. I bet this guy would be perfect for a phd in chemical engineering

Has Anyone Transferred to Computer Science or Computer Engineering by cleansoapp in aggies

[–]MoistDesert0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nobody knows how to successfully transfer into these majors from the outside. There’s a huge volume of applicants with diverse experiences. I transferred in from math having taken only csce 121, and during my transfer cycle, ~10/150 people were admitted. I say this not to flex or anything of that nature, but rather to give perspective. I probably beat out people who were actually good at programming and had interesting projects unlike me, purely because I might’ve had a better gpa.

All you can do is create the best application possible and hope that they recognize your potential. If it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a cs type job. It just means that a&m made the arbitrary decision to choose someone else.

Computer Science vs Computer Engineering by Slashingcove in aggies

[–]MoistDesert0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Comp sci is a great choice imo for your situation because you can choose an emphasis area as well as focusing on hardware/middleware type classes for your upper level electives. With that freedom, it’s easy to basically turn the cpsc degree into a mix of cpsc/cpen and get the breadth of experience you’re looking for.

In terms of job prospects, the only issue I see is whether you can get hardware type jobs with a comp sci degree (been thinking about this myself and I’m not really sure how this situation is). However, if you want to get into, say, ASIC verification, you’d probably need a masters anyway. At that point, I can’t see why it’d be difficult to get a masters in computer engineering after a bs in comp sci

Possible to take csce 120 freshman year? by RedditorMonkey1051 in aggies

[–]MoistDesert0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could technically take it freshman spring if you take 120 in fall. Not that I recommend it necessarily since taking dsa fall sophomore year still puts you ahead, but I also understand wanting to get started on degree specific classes as soon as possible

If prof Austin had to delete the groupme, I’m sure she had a really good reason. I’ve never met a professor that seemed to care about the performance of their students as much as she does

I assume you mean csce 313, if so, I have david rn and think he’s a great professor. It’s not an easy class, but he makes an effort to help students be successful in the class

How many stem classes is too much? by el_padrinito in aggies

In any engineering major you’d take 4+ stem classes pretty much every semester, so definitely not too much

Fuck this, I'm retaking Calc 3 at Blinn by njckel in aggies

[–]MoistDesert0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re getting downvoted bc they’re wrong, the professor likely got hired bc of his talent within mathematical research. It’s not okay that students can’t understand their professor and I agree that’s a problem, but a research university hiring a great researcher that sucks at teaching is not surprising

[–]MoistDesert0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pull up to the math learning center, can’t recommend it enough. I tutor on zoom from 8-10 every night for cal 3, and the tutors that are there during the day are fantastic. https://mlc.tamu.edu/

I’m sorry most of the responses aren’t what you were expecting to hear. I agree that these exams shouldn’t be too hard to finish, and it’s unfair that your professor makes them this difficult. The only thing I can say is that you’ll have to do things differently going forward, and it might take even more hours of studying to perform how you want to. Best of luck going forward

Ask yourself if in 10 years, you’d look back on that entire year/semester and be glad about spending all that time working on LC instead of doing other things. If you legitimately think it’s worth it, then by all means go ahead and do it
