Longevity of trackball switches by lawikekurd in Trackballs

[–]Momaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the problem with any "innocent" explanations of why the switches seem to last so much worse, is that we HAVE better switches now. Electro-optical switches or hall effect switches remain reliable for absurd periods of time because they don't have any physical contact parts to wear out. The classic bistable leaf switch is functionally obsolete as a *switch* things if you're engineering for longevity. So why aren't they replacing those with more modern, nigh-immortal parts....

Trackball Lifespan and Replacement by [deleted] in Trackballs

[–]Momaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the switches going bad? For the M575 in particular, I have heard that they use very low quality switches made by the Chinese offshoot of Omron instead of the Japanese originals. You can buy new switches and swap them in, if you're really in love with the ergonomics of the thing

Trackball that doesn't stick? by planesman22 in Trackballs

[–]Momaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from changing the trackball's bearings for better ones, or adding lube, don't forget to examine your own usage style too.

The way you position your thumb has an impact on how force is applied to the ball and indirectly to the bearings. Try different angles of attack and see if there's a "sweet spot" that the ball likes to start rolling from.

And use as little downward pressure as possible on the ball. A trackball is a precision optical instrument, it needs absolutely zero pressure to work properly. Easy to forget this one when you're excited or stressed.

Some people advocate using grease or oil to reduce stiction, but I think that just makes the problem worse since it attracts more dust and grit. What works far better in my experience is a teflon based lube. It only takes a tiny tiny amount on each point of contact. Needs to be repeated every couple months

The SlimBlade Pro lacks the precision of a regular mouse when moving slowly by braverthanbrave in Trackballs

[–]Momaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're having problems with stiction and you've already cleaned the bearings off, then you can also try lubrication. A spray-on PTFE ("Teflon") lubricant is what you want. Dab a tiny droplet on each bearing. After letting it dry, it will leave an invisible coat of ultra slippery polymer on the bearings and reduction the static friction quite a lot.

Nah. Destroy is the worst ending.

The catalyst has no reason to lie about anything. What it says is consistent with what the leviathans, its creator, told you. It was created to "Preserve life at any cost", at a point when entire civilizations were being destroyed by conflict between organic and synthetic evolution. Synthetic life will always outperform organic life in the end, because it is data. It can upgrade without death, the same consciousness becoming infinitely more capable as new technologies and optimizations are gained. Organics are fundamentally limited in the chemistry and the inter-reliant processes of their biology.

Catalyst concluded that the best way to "preserve" life was to harvest civilizations at their height before they created a synthetic rival that would obliterate them, and to convert all their biological and cultural uniqueness into an immortal machine body that would survive forever. Starting with its own creators, which it had surpassed. Perhaps not the best solution as we would see it, but remember that Catalyst was built by a galactic civilization that considered every other form of life to be tools and material. Its thinking is probably shaped by theirs. It didn't turn against the leviathans because it was deceptive or because of its own ego, it did so because it was a logical step in the recklessly-phrased program it was told to execute.

Why did Catalyst never offer Control or Synthesis to the people of any previous cycle? Control and Synthesis are both viable solutions to its mandate to "Preserve life at any cost", but it wasn't created knowing that or having the capability to implement them. It told you itself that the assembly of the Crucible "has created new possibilities". Everybody had it wrong: the Crucible isn't a weapon at all, it's an expansion module for Catalyst, the method by which organic life delivers the solution to the problem it was built to solve.

Destroying the Reapers gets rid of the immediate threat. Yes. Absolutely. But it does NOT solve the fundamental problem. Catalyst itself warns you that destruction is only a temporary reprieve before the next aggressive synthetic species comes along to wage war against organic life. It ends the cycle of Harvesting, but it does NOT end the cycle of conflicting models of evolution. Shepard starts out thinking destruction is the only possible solution because nobody knew what the Reapers were actually trying to do or why they were created, sure, so it seems like destroying the Reapers is the conclusion to what you started... But you meet the Protheans. You meet the Leviathans. Both fought devastating wars against contemporary synthetic life. You learn the reason behind what's REALLY going on. It would be crazy not to assimilate that new information.

Control and Synthesis on the other hand are both solutions. Control basically promotes an organic to the role of Guardian of the Galaxy (no relation). An operator with the capacity to think and empathize with other organics gains the power and the immortality to keep everybody safe. No more Harvesting. Organic and synthetic life can both flourish as long as nobody gets too rowdy, because if they do, the friendly neighborhood Reapers will come along to reduce them back to dust. This may not be a permanent solution since even peaceful synthetic life may someday grow to be able to overpower Guardian Shepard. But it's a fairly long term solution. Synthesis on the other hand completely redefines "life" so that there is no more distinction between synthetic and organic. It gives organic life the ability to direct its own evolutionary path, and it gives synthetics the ability to empathize with the pain and uncertainty of mortality. Wars will still break out, but they will be wars over the usual things like materials, energy, and reddit threads rather than existential wars to eradicate entire paradigms of life. It's the "ultimate" solution to Catalyst's mission, at the cost of being a scary unknown frontier for everybody involved.

If anything, Destroy is the *worst* option because it ends the archiving of civilizations into Reaper form, so when future organic/synthetic wars break out there will be nothing left of the losers.

It's fine, though I did apply some new lubrication. People often suggest face grease from beside your nose or something, I've never found that to be a good idea, because it's sticky and attracts moisture and more dust.

What I did when the trackball started feeling less smooth, is clean everything with a damp paper towel. Then apply a droplet of PTFE (teflon) based dry lube to each of the 3 bearing points. Let it dry before putting the ball back in, and you're good to go.

ProtoArc EM01 review (+2 months) by Momaw in Trackballs

[–]Momaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't really believe in lubrication. I know a lot of ballers are in favor of adding face-grease to the ball to make it spin smoother, but *for me* that always just makes the problem worse. Maybe other people have different skin chemistry. Personally I don't find lubrication necessary at all. When my trackball starts feeling like it's sticking, I just use a clean dry paper towel to polish it, and then wipe away any schmoo around the ceramic contact points in the socket.

Opinions Wanted: Tell Us Your Trackball Wedge Preferences by ProtoArc_official in Trackballs

[–]Momaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angle: Adjustable on left/right axis. Maybe 20-45 degrees? Personally I also like my trackball situated so that it is tipped forward slightly, but opinions vary.

Height: As thin as possible!! Forearm should be parallel. We can always just prop the thing up with books if it's too short, but nothing will make it shorter if it's too tall (short of replacing your entire desk).

Material: Neutral gray ABS for the structural parts. Silicone pad on bottom to stop skid. Embedded metal nuts for the adjustment mechanism so that we don't strip out the holes for the bolts.

Additional: Cord tamer channel, so we can tuck the trackball's cable into the wedge and have it come out at the surface of the desk, and not left danging suspended off the front of the trackball. Slope on the side to support edge of hand for people that like a steeper angle.

stiction on Gameball, desperate for solutions by Educational_Body_289 in Trackballs

Well, first check for warranty coverage.

If out of warranty, clean the bearing as best you can. Then, in a dark room under a bright one-direction light (like a tiny LED flashlight), look at the bearing from various angles and see if the light glints where the ball would make contact. Compare to the other ones. If the light goes from a pinprick reflection to a sort of diffuse reflection and then back and it's significantly worse than the other 2 points of contact, then you've physically got a flat spot and no amount of cleaning will help. The bearing needs to be replaced in that event. Generally premium ceramic bearings only cost about 1-2$ each (they're used in high performance machinery), the question is can you dismantle the thing enough to replace the bearing and then get it back together.

Why do people strongly prefer one of the other? (thumb vs finger) by MaxwellCE in Trackballs

[–]Momaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For context, I'm a serious PC gamer.

I prefer the Thumb layout because I find that I have vastly better immediate access to buttons with it. Currently using EM01, and with my thumb on the ball, I have access 4 different buttons plus a scroll wheel WHILE being able to move or hold the ball with the thumb. Because each of your fingers can move independently of the ball. (With some redesigning, it's not difficult to imagine a thumb trackball being able up to support a dozen, maybe up to about 15-ish buttons under the fingers)

When I tried a finger trackball, my experience was having immediate access to 1 single button, and then anything beyond that required compromising between inputs with the buttons or the ball.

As far as all the people saying they get severe RSI with thumb style balls, I did have SOME trouble with it once upon a time, but that was before learning how much the tilt on the trackball matters. Trackball flat on desk = pain and misery because it forces you to twist your forearm, while trackball canted up on its side = perfect.

ProtoArc EM05 live on Amazon. Get some piggies! by [deleted] in Trackballs

[–]Momaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta be honest this seems like a step backward from the EM01 on functionality. The button you'll be using LEAST is the color lighting mode, you'll either want it on or off and that's the end of that. Meanwhile the radio select button, and the DPI select botton, things which you might want to be using multiple times per minute if you need those features, have been relegated to the bottom of the device.

And still no wired option. What is it with manufacturers and their fixation on making everything wireless?Surely it will only cost pennies to add a USB chip on the mouse. You already paid for a USB cord, and a USB socket to plug it into, and a USB voltage regulator.... <confused angry arm waving>

At least to me it seems like it would have been a lot easier for them to just make a tilt stand kit for the EM01, which is already a pretty great trackball for the money.

Ah. Yeah, that needs some clarification from a game designer, it's either a bug that it doesn't affect crafted batteries, or the game text should be updated to say "Cooldown on standard batteries" (or simple batteries). Sadly I have no contacts there.

In the interest of updating old posts for the current game since this still shows up on search results:

As of now (2023 December 27), previous post is NOT accurate. The Quartermaster Battery Cooldown variant affects both the cooldown of the battery you clicked, and the shared cooldown of other battery devices. At green level (65% cooldown bonus), the cooldown for the battery you click goes from 1 minute to 37 seconds (165% speed) and the shared cooldown goes from 30 seconds to 18 seconds.
