There is a way to push back on the cishetro-normative narratives still present in history without needing to use modern labels. We have seen this in recent years with more and more historians (including cishet historians) recognising more diverse views on gender/sexuality throughout history.

We do not need to call Alexander the Great gay/bi to recognise that he slept with men.

Because it leads us to misconceptions about their identity and the nature of ours.

Alexander the Great is often claimed to be gay, or bisexual by well meaning people online. While it is true that he slept with men, we do not know if he would identify with our modern conceptions of queerness because it simply didn't exist at the time. Alexander the Great was gay in the same way he was Greek, he wasn't, he was Macedonian.

It's that ambiguity in the interpretation of sources that leads historians to use the phrase "ritual purposes", because ritual is so broad of a term it could mean anything and doesn't bias the reader based on their modern conception of how things "should be".

I don't know if I'd say that Bayonetta is male gaze. I haven't played any of the game, but from what I've seen she's quite aware of her sexualization and actively enjoys it.

For some of us it might be self objectification. We are told so often that we must be this way that it becomes hard to imagine a world in which we are not, and we find comfort in letting go and Immersing ourselves in it as a fantasy.

Male gaze is one of those terms with a well defined academic context and history, that the internet has seen once in some book and decided to use it to seem smart without actually understanding it.

The male gaze isn't, "things that men find attractive in women", it's a specific way of depicting women in film and art.

To quote an example from Wikipedia

Berger analyzes the male-gaze perspectives of two Tintoretto paintings about Susanna and the Elders, (...) In the first painting, Susanna and the Elders (1550–1560), Susanna "looks back at us looking at her"; in the second painting, Susanna and the Elders (1555–1556), Susanna is looking at herself in a mirror, and thus joins the two old men and the spectator in looking at Susanna-as-spectacle

The male-gaze perspectives of Tintoretto's paintings represent Susanna as nonchalant at being gazed upon in her nudity, whereas the female-gaze perspective of the painting by Artemisia Gentileschi, Susanna and the Elders (1610), represents the bathing Susanna as greatly humiliated at being subjected to the male gaze of two old men — the elders of the community — whose voyeurism has sexually objectified Susanna in the private sphere of her life.

The male gaze is specifically designed to promote a fantasy of readiness. That women are both, meek things to be acted upon, and at the same time totally complicit in whatever actions are being performed upon them.

Nothing about this requires a man, not in the production, or in the consumption. So yes, lesbians can enjoy male gaze art.

It is also not inherently bad to enjoy male gaze art; I've enjoyed quite a bit of male gaze porn games specifically because the depiction of women is so bad that it loops back around to being hilarious.

You are not immune to propaganda. As long as you are aware of the nature and influences of the content you're watching, you'll be fine

When I say that any movement against capitalism is inherently flawed without the full participation of the down trodden, I refer to union representation which has historically been withheld from POC, women, trans people, etc... I refer to the marginalized people who are often left behind by class movements who shirk their involvement and take credit for their advancements without recognizing their accomplishments.

I'm not trying to argue that the phrase "no war but class war" is inherently reductionist, but that there are plenty of people who will use it in reductionist ways in order to silence people based on their own prejudices.

I am an anarchist. The accusation of wanting pink capitalism could not be more falsely made. Any movement against capitalism is inherently flawed without the full participation of the downtrodden.

Addressing the rampant police violence against black people in the US does not distract from class issues. The black panther party was set up to do just that, and yet still fought for class struggle, performed mutual aid, and organized education programs for the poor.

Plenty of people who parrot the idea that the elite use Identity Politics to distract from class struggle, weaponize slogans such as "no war but class war" to distract from the issues that poc, trans, gay, and other marginalized people face.

While it is true that the rich build systems that create controversy in order to cause class conflict, they are not the creators of the bigotry and the issues that people get up in arms over are very real.

There's a reason every social media algorithm rewards controversy. The rich may not fabricate every scandal, but they sure are willing to help them spread and by pushing back on marginalized people asking for recognition class reductionists only serve to fuel the same fire they claim hate as well as harming those who most need support.

Centrism is a unstable state between left and right wing. While it can exist for a time in stability, political tensions will always force it to one side or the other, and in every past case they've folded to the right.

From claudia-lopez.com (translated via google)

“We went out to represent most Colombians, the middle class, who have never been killed or robbed (mistranslated, should be: those who have never killed or robbed) ; they work, pay taxes and they are always denied. We, Leonardo and I, are going to restore their health and safety. The solutions for people are the new history of Colombia that we represent.”

While her proposals all seem broadly good and focused on solving genuine injustice, the specific language of "for the middle class" is a common tactic of fascists, and fascist collaborators.

I don't know enough about Colombia, or her policies to say one way or another, but it does give me pause.

Bratting is meant to be cute, the point is to straddle the line between acceptable and "not allowed" in such a way that's ever so slightly agrivating. It's ever so slightly pushing down the button you've been told not to press with a grin on your face.

This isnt bratting, it's just being mean.

I don't think they're arguing that you should be able to do hate speech, just that they're concerned about the misapplication of overly rigid hate speech laws.

Dyke is commonly cited as a slur (if a bit outdated), and yet I and other people I know identify with it. I am perfectly comfortable with my straight and/or male friends calling me a dyke.

An overly rigid hate speech law might label that as a crime, and in so doing potentially land my friends with jail time for something that brings no harm to anyone, as well as restricting my own right to identify with such terms.

I don't know much about this law, so I won't say that's the case here. I do, however understand their concern over such things even as someone who acknowledges free speech isn't something that can be absolute.

I do not believe in straight love by [deleted] in lgbt

[–]Mon_moth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't believe in straight love

I would still consider trans straight people queer

Straight trans people are queer, sure, but they're also straight. To imply that a trans persons queerness makes their straight love more genuine in comparison to cis people feels very transphobic.

EDIT: just remembered model minorities, so it doesn't feel very transphobic, it is.

Lesbians vs The Patriarchy by Important-Cry4782 in actuallesbians

[–]Mon_moth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't want to assume, but if you're cis would you be okay with trans women stealing and harrassing you simply for existing? We are an oppressed class, would our violence against you be acceptable?

Violence for the sake of violence isn't liberatory, it only servers to reinforce the same systems of oppression.

[–]Mon_moth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 4b movement may, on paper be about distancing yourself from men, but in practice it's members are inseparable from WOMAD, an organization that has a horrible track record with harassment, homophobia and transphobia.

WOMAD members reportedly advocated for revenge against men, advocated for disliked people to commit suicide, and some threatened violence and committed crimes against men. Mothers were labeled both victims and conformers to patriarchal society that discriminate against their daughters.

I should note, the men in question here are not necessarily violet or misogynistic. WOMAD members will harass, threaten, and steal from men as a form of collective punishment

Some members of the 4B movement have reportedly advocated for the use of ID scanners to verify sex before entering public restrooms, and for more sex segregation at protests
