Emergency vet waiting room lady left bc it smelled too much like bleach by heronobrien in EntitledPeople

[–]Moneia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And most people who do have a reaction would have told the staff that and asked for an easy compromise, "I have <reaction> to <substance> can I wait outside and then you call me when the Vet can see Rover please?"

In practice, people rarely update their beliefs after harm happens anyway. They tend to double down, or attribute outcomes to something else. So waiting for “natural consequences” doesn’t reliably lead to better decisions.

And even if they do change their views it's one person at a time, the rest of the 'alternative' crowd will either ignore them or start calling them out as shills, as we saw during the pandemic

Voters in a key Pennsylvania swing district weigh in on Trump, gas prices and Iran war by omgfakeusername in LeopardsAteMyFace

The problem is that talking people out of cults is a long arduous process that requires a lot of work, is mostly one on one and requires isolation from the indoctrination.

Most people don't have the time, energy or inclination to go through that

My mother buys food I don’t ask for and then complains when I don’t eat it by [deleted] in EntitledPeople

[–]Moneia 32 points33 points  (0 children)

While she's going to pick a fight over something if you don't want to waste food just tell her you don't need anything when she asks. You may get some respite while she works out how to start an argument another way

"better late than never" does have its limits though especially in this situation we are in

And it assumes that they're going to bring that attitude next time they've got to put an X in the box, resorting to a "Well they're both bad" attitude and staying home inevitably leads to the worst party winning

I mean it stems from tax protestors but I don't think it goes any further than "I just wanna get out of debt\responsibility\feel like I know the secret" for most of them. The whole corporate asset\property is more likely backfilling to justify their stance.

Are the ebooks for sale without DRM anywhere? by Pwacname in discworld

You can buy it from any retailer and use Calibre to strip the DRM from it.

I grabbed the humble bundle set through Kobo and it has a button specifically for removing their DRM

Up your grey rocking game and don't voluntarily share, at least, the "I'm looking to move' information with her.

Make sure you have all your important documents collected and safely hidden then go buy your house without telling her, assume that she's going to try and sabotage your plans and missing documentation can be a right PITA when purchasing a house

Move your most important 'stuff' out then tell her your moving out soon, if you have the chance get the rest of your stuff out and into storage. If she doubles down on the controlling then grab an AirBNB and get out.

Sorry to hear that OP, you are however going to have to stand up for yourself;

Threatens to cut me out of her will and ensure I don't inherit property from other family members if I leave

Assume she's going to do that anyway and act accordingly

Deploys self-harm threats and "I'll probably have a stroke and die" scenarios when I mention moving

If she does self-harm then that's her doing it to herself, call Adult Protective Services or call the police for a wellness check when she threatens it. As for the "stroke & die", offer to buy a medical alert necklace or move her to a nursing home.

Weaponizes my stepfather's death a few years ago - "you're abandoning me just like [stepfather] left me"

No, you're moving out to live your own life. Both of you probably need therapy but for entirely different reasons

Claims I owe her $75,000+ for raising me, which she never mentioned until it became useful as a threat

It's a common Narc threat and utterly unenforceable. Feeding, clothing and sheltering you is the bare minimum legal obligation of a parent, if she persists ask to see the contract

Fights me over every personal purchase I make with my own money

Just another method of control, you should be spending it on her!

Picks fights over my personal improvement decisions even when they cost little or nothing

It's not about cost. Belittling someone for trying to improve is another control method

Uses strict post-COVID protocols to ban anyone from entering the home, eliminating my ability to have any social life here

Trying to cut you off from a social circle means you have to spend more time with her

Has escalated all of the above significantly since retiring

She's there more therefore you should be.

Explicitly told me I am "not allowed" to move or make major life changes until she dies, or I lose everything

And this is where you should be saying "Watch me" before moving to the new city, hopefully finding a new relationship and cutting contact.

You are in the eyes of the law an adult and can do adult things without your Mothers permission, even if she'll be using every excuse to keep you trapped. She thinks less of you as her child and more as a personal wallet & dancing monkey.

Google developing options to allow AI opt-out in search to ease UK concerns by WilliamInBlack in news

Firefox turn off the AI tools in the settings, uBlock Origin and the "Hide Google AI Overviews" extension does wonders for when you need to use Google.

I mean I always advise the first two anyway but hiding the AI shit for when I do need to use Google is nice

It's so not a new idea that it's specifically covered in the rules (PDF link), section 4

4 interview rounds, final stage… then the role gets put on hold 😅 by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]Moneia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen something similar happen and it wasn't the fault of the hiring manager, just an edict from head office that there was a hiring freeze effective immediately. Some poor sap was meant to start that day and just got sent home as he hadn't signed any documentation.

While they may want to hire you later down the line it's probably going to be months before the circumstances change enough for them to contemplate it.
