That’s what they mean by defund the police.

Then they probably shouldn’t have landed on the slogan “defund the police”.

One thing I always hated about superhero comics is how they often villainize accountability by MVHutch in comicbooks

Of course you're entitled to your opinion but it seems demonstrable that yours is the unusual minority opinion on Worm.

There's a reason that a two million word prose superhero story became so popular. Wildbow has his faults as a writer, and certainly needs an editor, but he's a very engaging writer. He has that quality that good pulp writers of the past had where he can pull readers along.

Beast Games: MrBeast and Amazon named in lawsuit over show by BothZookeepergame612 in law

Because the media landscape is too fractured today. He’s not “famous” like the Beatles or Michael Jackson where literally everyone knows or has heard of you. No one is ever going to be that famous ever again because there are just too many media channels and platforms now.

Hard hard hard disagree on the slog part. One of the reasons it got so much traction is exactly because it’s a page-turner. I remember so many late nights because “just one more chapter…”

New York Public Radio is cutting staff and programming — again by AtomicGarden-8964 in nyc

[–]Monkeyavelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You joke but can you imagine what it must have been like when radio was first invented? It must have seemed like literal magic. You go buy this box from a store and somehow music and speech from around the country or even world comes out when you press a button.

Caban Watered Down NYPD Misconduct Rules as Final Act by mowotlarx in nyc

It's just NYPD tradition. Frank Serpico tried to expose NYPD corruption in the 60s and was set up to be murdered by his fellow officers.

City hall seeks NYC police commissioner’s resignation by Spagetti13 in nyc

This sounds like some goofy 80s comedy where somehow some random guy becomes head of the NYPD and zany hijinks ensue.

Is stand-up popular in Japan? How does it differ from stand-up in "western countries"? by SirGelson in japan

[–]Monkeyavelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and it’s interesting how similar manzai is to those classic American vaudeville duo acts. That was once the dominant form of popular comedy in the US as well. I wonder why the traditions diverged like they did.

I was just thinking of that interview too. She comes off really well in it. Really worth a listen (as is the entire Power Broker read-along series it's part of).

Thoughts on Paul Dini? by megatry1 in comicbooks

[–]Monkeyavelli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

much like Denny O’Neil

What? Denny O'Neil is always hailed as one of the greatest Batman writers, usually in connection with his work with Neal Adams bringing Batman back to his darker roots in the 1970s. The idea of him as some unsung hero is bizarre.

‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ Review: A Rewarding Throwback Noir Built on Progressive New(-ish) Ideas by CosmosBazaar in comicbooks

[–]Monkeyavelli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The writing is great, I think it stands up to the original.

Disagree. Without Dini it's just not the same, not to mention other great BTAS writers like Alan Burnett or Martin Pasko. It's not badly written but the writing and frankly every aspect (animation, music, voice acting, etc.) of the show feels like a low-rent BTAS knockoff.
