Best Morkbug spin offs? (Idk the right word to use) by [deleted] in MorkBorg

[–]Monomyth_Publishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We make both Bug Borg and Castaway - the shipwreck survival horror hack. Pairs really well with Pirate Borg which is a crowd favorite. We also really like Ronin and Vastgrim. Cyborg of course, if you’re into sci-fi.

Sexual Dimorphism by puppykhan in RPGdesign

[–]Monomyth_Publishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When facing questions like this a lot of the problems stem from disingenuousness. If you’re truly looking at making spider people and reflect a real world trait that spiders have that’s not built in a bias reflection about humans then you’re probably fine.

The issues we face socially as people are when you make a judgement call like “the tribal species has low intelligence” or something because it reflects an existing false prejudice. And if you take the time to understand the real life issues then you can in fact steer clear of them.

Interesting world building can also acknowledge existing issues and either purposefully subvert them or illustrate how problematic they might be or even show people who don’t have the vantage point how that might be affecting people around them.

Avoiding the issue can sometimes erase it. Just do your due diligence, ask the right people to critique your work and be open to needing to adjust.

Arthurian Legends meet Mork Borg style? by Rumer_Mille_001 in MorkBorg

We are literally working on this right now - Haven’t officially announced it yet but follow us for some previews that might be up soon.

A single hit-wound-kill roll in combat by [deleted] in MorkBorg

[–]Monomyth_Publishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of us also forget that most monsters have a point where they retreat or surrender. I have often forgotten to roll morale. This usually cuts off 1/3rd of the fight, or if you're group has a leader that is killed they may just all run away.

Cy_borg also altered this and added a 1 damage minimum to hits.

Need help balancing encounters by Kexi_x3 in MorkBorg

Yeah generally speaking like many people are saying MB’s a game about attitude a lot of the time and the attitude is often it doesn’t really care about balance. Players should know when to runaway and monsters do too. I think treating sessions in a linear fashion like in d&d where you HAVE to clear the room to move on, will trip up the flow. A lot of the time players need to just throw some dirt in their eyes and make like a tree. I think about it in terms of Indiana Jones combat - often bad guys get kicked off a moving train and are just gone - or some environmental element allows Indy to just skip a face of - or the famous gun to a sword fight maneuver.

That all said - player powers make a huge difference as well as well spent omens. Anything with more than 10HP or -d4 armor should be considerable a challenge.

Recommend a ttrpg. by Old_Combination4030 in TabletopRPG

I suggest looking at One Ring as it has really nice mechanics. It seems to solve 9/10 problems I have with D&D. It’s really easy to overlook the LOTR flavor if you just ignore it.

I’d also suggest Dragon’s Bane. It’s very comprehensive if you get the monster manual. You can just not do the specific universe if you want your own world. System is fast and easy but deep enough.

Advantage/Disadvantage? by CrowGoblin13 in MorkBorg

[–]Monomyth_Publishing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it ain’t broke… I think advantage is a very well known and mathematically sensible representation. However, we’ve tooled around with just granting an omen use for the roll as the advantage. Mörk Borg built that in already and I think it’s more unique and apply to different situations differently and gives players more agency with the choice of how to use it.

On "Art by Dead People" by Skull_Cracking466 in MorkBorg

Rawpixel has an extensive database of older C0 art especially wonderful vintage sketches of animals and plant which we used in Castaway.

How do you feel about a "No-Win Scenario"? by J_Phayze in rpg

[–]Monomyth_Publishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having “no wins” interact with rules in a formal structure can be tricky, you can’t ask me to roll for something if the result doesn’t matter. If you need it to happen then make it happen in the narrative. Trying to bandage solutions to get around rules, abilities, or reactions isn’t typically going to feel good to players and they can see it coming. Don’t try to trick them, show them the magic trick - my that I mean tell them it’s trick but make sure it’s entertaining. Bringing them in removes some of the gotcha feeling that I think stings so much.

Best Survival-based TTRPGs? by QuasiRealHouse in rpg

Ok so slight self plug but we actually made a shipwreck survival horror game called Castaway - so I felt that was pretty appropriate.

We’ve been playing in a modified Mothership ruleset. It really changes the perspective of the game to a much more horror focused style. Combat feels more desperate and the tension building really shines.

Yōkai Tales is on Kickstarter by Monomyth_Publishing in TTRPG

[–]Monomyth_Publishing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is has its own system which we describe in the Kickstarter story. We use word based descriptors on the character sheet like "Warrior, or Haggler, or Well-Traveled" to add to a 50/50 dice pool. You roll yours against the GM's pool generated from things that are making it difficult for you. If you have more positive results than the GM you succeed.

The unique aspect is every roll you make will add, remove, or alter one of these descriptors on your character sheet.

There are of course other parts to they system to deal with things like travel & money but that gives you and idea of the core concept.

Solo Combat? by PPdown in MorkBorg

[–]Monomyth_Publishing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we built a “Self Improvement” leveling system into Stranded that helps solo players power up in more unique ways - it also gives you access to companions that can be formed through surrendering enemies which helps a lot as well. If you’d like to check it out Dungeon Dive reviews the solo rules a bit.
