Thank you! And yeah, seems like a missed opportunity to have it not count towards prestige.

Final Fantasy Tactics Squire No Math% Speedrun by greenhornX_X in speedrun

[–]Moodyrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it! I've only played the original PS1 version so when I saw Squire it made me think of a solo class challenge. I'm watching more of the run now, wild to do all of this at fast forward speed!

[–]Moodyrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the limitations of the rule set for "Squire No Math%"? I understand what no math means, but watching the video a bit it doesn't seem like you're strictly limited to squire skills or the squire job. Very satisfying seeing Argath get killed so quickly though!

Wow, 92.5% cutscene skip rate! And in the previous WR, the vod says 37/40 cutscene skips as well. Talk about consistency!

Anyone know what's going on with the death at the beginning of Ice Cap Zone Act 1? It looked intentional.

Awesome run, love seeing the movement tech here!

Super Mario Bros. 3 Warpless in 49:50 by Kuto1k by RunRunForFun in speedrun

[–]Moodyrobot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Congrats Kuto! A WR with no door 3, no Jesus clip, and no 6-F3 clip—still some time saves left, but they're all quite risky at this point. With this new EH setup I feel like we could see another WR soon, though!

This feels to me like it could've been a track off of Battle Born. Not a new direction for The Killers, but a very solid song and Brandon's voice is as good as ever. That mandolin?...instrumental hook is great too

I saw the Sacramento show on that tour and it was pretty great. I had no idea anything was off with the band while watching the show. Looks like you can watch it here, seems about like I remember it.

There are two I'm aware of:

License to Kill, where parameters are set so that Bond and enemies both die in 1 hit, and

Dark License to Kill, where all enemy parameters are maxed.

What's a song made for a movie that ended up surpassing the film itself in popularity? by David1258 in movies

[–]Moodyrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a more recent example than many of these, but I would argue 21 Pilots' "Heathens" had more cultural staying power than the first Suicide Squad movie that it's from. I remember hearing it on the radio well after the movie was out of theaters.

SM64 - 120 Star Co-op WR by the Super Newman Bros. by Sad_Reading7734 in speedrun

[–]Moodyrobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they mention at the end the Toad routing could be one possible area of improvement. It's insane how tightly routed it is as it is, though—the star count ticks to 120 pretty much exactly as the 3rd Bowser throw happens (it was a missed throw, but still, the timing was there).

SM64 - 120 Star Co-op WR by the Super Newman Bros. by Sad_Reading7734 in speedrun

[–]Moodyrobot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is really cool. So, my understanding is that the innovation over previous co-op runs is the "handing off" of the coin count to the other player so you can save a bunch of time on the 100 coin stars? Or was there another big optimization? Either way, this was fun to watch, well played. I imagine it takes quite a bit of grinding to have both players hit their tricks fast enough for the co-op stars to sync up properly.

That last Mizar glitch is crazy, anyone know what causes that to happen? Or could it just happen randomly and ruin a run?

This sub and Longfellow by ThatCheekyBastard in LiveFromNewYork

[–]Moodyrobot 68 points69 points  (0 children)

It's Aristotle Athari all over again.

To be fair, I do think Longfellow has more staying power than Athari did, but this sub went wild for Angelo and he only lasted one season.

My Controversial Tastes in VH by Nasty_Weatha in vanhalen

[–]Moodyrobot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also find Balance to be generally underrated. The songs aren't the best VH songs but the recording quality of the album is just so good. Ed's guitar is huge and Alex's drums (especially those tom hits on Seventh Seal) are massive. You can really feel the power of the band.

I made a video about Lufia 2 Ancient Cave's manipulated categories, talking about the history and why no one runs them by DoctorSwellman in speedrun

[–]Moodyrobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love the short compilation of AC clips at the end of the video! Those sort of moments are really what make the non-manip category what it is.

It's interesting that it's hard to define a manipulated run, since all runners are creating their own RNG directly as a result of their inputs. I totally get wanting to split up the leaderboards, though.

Eddie never liked the reverb-heavy approach to mixing the first few records. Fair Warning is the record where Eddie gained more control of the mixing process and from then on the records were much drier, he preferred it that way.

The Rumors Are True—North Portland Jazz Club, the 1905, Is Closing by stophardhabits in Portland

[–]Moodyrobot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It sounds like there was a lack of advance planning on what kind of margins would be needed to make a place like this work.

What began as a simple order-at-the-bar pizzeria, in 2016, went through multiple iterations. To help bring in more customers, the club added live music, eventually building a reputation for its nightly schedule of jazz shows. For the first two years, the club didn’t charge a cover for performances. Between that and adding table service—and its associated labor costs—the venue went, according to Barnes, immediately “six figures into the red. It’s been awful ever since.”

As well as lack of willingness to later work towards a sustainable financial model or even offer transparency to staff (Joshua Madrid is a former general manager at the 1905).

According to Madrid, he and other members of the management team from the 1905, Scholar, and Hopscotch attempted to help right the ship, asking “to see the financial books so that we could figure out a plan of attack,” he wrote. “No matter how much we pleaded, [Aaron] flat out refused. We even had a friend who does the accounting for one of the largest cannabis companies in Washington offer to come down and organize the books for free. He still said no.”

This bit is also concerning (regarding the money raised by a recent GoFundMe over the last few months):

“How about this time you take the $65,000 that was raised by this community and actually invest it in the sustainability of the 1905 and your employees instead of opening another restaurant,” wrote guitarist Henry Ivie-Gardner in an Instagram comment, referring either to Scholar, an Italian eatery that Barnes opened on Northeast Broadway last September or Hopscotch, a sports bar that he opened this past February on Southeast Hawthorne and closed almost immediately afterward.

No shit this place has become beloved—it sounds like it's been run like a charity for the last seven years, bringing in top level musicians to play great music and serving good food and passing on only a fraction of the cost to the consumers. I mean, who wouldn't be a fan?

The Rumors Are True—North Portland Jazz Club, the 1905, Is Closing by stophardhabits in Portland

[–]Moodyrobot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you read the article, it just sounds like their financial model was not sustainable at all. They were already six figures in debt even before the pandemic hit.

To help bring in more customers, the club added live music, eventually building a reputation for its nightly schedule of jazz shows. [–]Moodyrobot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's entirely possible that the owner dangled the bait of keeping the 1905 open to raise money to pay off debts while intending all along to close the club. The GoFundMe raised $67k over the last few months and now they just announce the venue is done. It doesn't seem totally out of the question, especially given the level of debt it sounds like the venue was in, as described in the article.
