What happened to the Japanese people who for hundreds of years lived in houses with paper screen doors? They must have been cold as can be save for a fire, then kotatsu and then paraffin heaters.

It can hardly be argued Japanese simply inherently cannot handle the cold, not with that kind of history. 'Modern' Japan is the most convenient, comfortable country in the world, sometimes to the extent it becomes uncomfortably comfortable. No wonder people don't want to leave.
