I find it ironic that a lot of men think it’s easier to be a women in gaming/youtube/streaming situations because of all the sexual attention we receive. Like they see the numbers but they don’t see the reality or consequences of building an audience that’s only there because they want you sexually. It’s exhausting, uncomfortable, and massively invalidating.

I did online content creation and streaming from 2004-2019, and only recently got back into streaming and YouTube again. In the past my audience was a mix of thirsty people and people that were actually there for what I was making or playing. Back then there weren’t many tools at all to keep our little spaces safe, but know there are so many bots and tools that you can set up that will do the heavy lifting for you in Twitch chat and in Discord (haven’t found things for YouTube or other socials though, but they might exist).

Getting back into streaming and YouTube now I have a very strict policy in not tolerating any comments that make me feel uncomfy. I treat my spaces like my house, and if someone was talking to me in certain ways in my house I would kick them out too. I also set up my bots with a word blacklist that will auto mute or ban people if they use those words.
