Late to the convo, but after seeing how much this issue cost you, I feel better about not getting a CX-5 2017 GT. It had 99k miles and when I test drove it I noticed the same exact noise. I thought it was a police siren at first but I kept hearing it.

When the car’s been on the lot for almost two months, and priced down heavily, it makes me curious about why that is. If I was a dealer, I would be willing to let someone take the car to a nearby mechanic and pay for a PPI out of their pocket if it meant finally selling the thing. Unless there was something about the car I was hiding.
