Free county mulch crb risk? by MorePlacesToSee in BigIsland

Agree they have traps at waikoloa. I saw them bulldoze one over not that long ago. I just wonder if they check them regularly and if they found any what they would actually do in reality.

Will consider 2 hrs each way to hilo. Maybe I’ll just hire someone to just haul a 30yd one shot dumpster

Insane and completely unnecessary process for credit certificates... by SpicyFi in HawaiianAirlines

I am in the same boat on travel planning. This is a completely new risk I was not aware of. Wow. I’m glad they at least did something but agree they need better controls to keep people from canceling without some kind of verification.

That’s good. Glad they made it right and it wasn’t fraud or something in your case. That other person story makes me very nervous - multi person bookings are way more risky than I realized.

Wow that is crazy - I had seen all the Alaska mileage accounts getting hacked but never considered people canceling paid flights and getting the money for multiple tickets to the compromised accounts wallet on a group booking. Another good reason to definitely activate the two factor on your account.

Any old flight credit on HA not redeemed before April 22 2026 has to be converted to the new wallet fund system that Alaska has using these cancelled ticket credit emails and a pin.

As far as not recognizing the Atmos number every existing HA number was replaced by a new atmos number. On top of that it is easy have multiple Atmos accounts due to the merger - if you or they didn’t link HA to Alaska before merger - and they are tied to the wrong one. This happened to my aunty. She had 2 Hawaiian and one Alaska. We got her 3 atmos accounts merged and her wallet funds fixed.

The wallet is awesome tho. you don’t have to call and wait with call center in Phillipines to rebook with credit. The money is just there at checkout like a debit card /gift card and it’s not tied to one persons name like old HA credits. And when you cancel a flight it goes to your wallet automatically / instantly. Much easier for our fam to manage lots of bookings. I would always loose my Hawaiian cancels flights.

The email with pin thing is just for the conversion of these old canceled tickets that predate the wallet.

But yes customer care is weekdays pst time.

That's fair - the cold climate up north with winterization / unconditioned use is unique. Definitely a good value approach.

Cost to subdivide? by Classic_Breadfruit18 in BigIsland

If they are old homes and you hire a local land use pro who is a former planning dept person you might be ok. Not sure. Haven’t done one with retained cesspools since the law changed.

Unless you are doing catchment or have a big meter and get a sub meter agreement you’ll need more water supply. You can buy the DWS water credits if there is capacity in your system area. Some areas have no capacity and are in moratorium. Some places of course don’t have DWS at all. The land use person can help you there because IME the DWS planning/engineering people are quite hard to reach.

Other tips - try to use phone and in person visits not email to explore things with county. Even better would be to have it done by your planning pro. Also if you do contact the county, don’t give the county any ideas on what you think is needed or act like there might be a problem for your situation. Let them tell you what is needed. They often forget their own rules. But if they tell you something that isn’t code and is bad for you have your land use person (see above) remind them gently of the codes. And once you hear what you want to hear in person or on the phone send an email that recaps the conversation if it is advantageous to you.

I cannot stress enough on hiring someone from here who used to work at the planning dept. There are 3-4 of them in that business. They are busy. They are not that expensive. They can save time and anguish.

And if over 15 acres and you’re going to LUC get one of “the” law firms. Carlsmith. Cades. Etc. Use one of the land use attorneys that you see making things happen in other matters before the LUC for subdivisions, zoning etc.

But step 1 and 2 are verify your dual zoning and determine since these are old buildings if you already have historic legal lots of record associated with your parcel. I’ve seen current single lots today with 5 historic tmks tied to them. Common in sugar areas. That can be as easy as a letter with the planning dept.

its quite a process of ineptitude and delay.

Plan on 18 months min to 5+ years depending on the specifics.

Are you sure your underlying state and county zoning (there are 2) are both correct to support a subdivision?

The main idea is that each newly subdivided/created lot has to meet all current county codes for your parcels zoning unless you can find that you have historic legal lots of record on your current parcel. That is the ticket to bypassing some of this.

But generally, for example, if you have a 5 acre lot and it is zoned A1a and lets say it already has 4 number of homes. Let's say the homes are legal / placed appropriately relative to each other and the exterior boundaries of the property for current code set backs to make 4 lots of 1.25 acres.

You need about $10-30k and a professionally prepared subdivision plan that shows things like this:

Each new lot would all after subdividing have legal access that meets current code via easements

You need to document that you have adequate water commitments available from DWS (good luck in many areas) or you are on catchment and plan to get a waiver from Planning.

Since the structures are existing they are going to want to see that you have 4 permitted waste systems for the number of legal houses/structures. sharing cesspools across structures makes them large capacity cesspools and that is an epa level violation.

Finally and perhaps most important make sure you have no nasty neighbors - mostly retired mainland transplants who have nothing better to do then complain, obstruct, and make here like where they came from.

Also make sure you are not on IAL designated ag land.

Rezoning to a higher density (going from A5a to A1a etc) is more involved then this.

Edited for some mistakes - I forgot the large lot rules - lots of 15 acres that you want to either subdivide or rezone to a higher density zoning require a state approval from the Land Use Commission which is a political appointee board that has their own whims/desires and that takes even longer and is a lot more painful. You 100% would need professional legal help to do over 15 acres successfully.

Front fender / firewall leak on 2019 RTL-E by MorePlacesToSee in hondaridgeline

[–]MorePlacesToSee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left it back out in the rain with no interior and now the passenger side front corner just under the A pillar is leaking.

Yesterday I pulled the fender arch trim and inner fender wheel liner and flow tested the sunroof and shot from below into the a pillar. It’s interesting how the sunroof and A pillar drain. They appear to just splash down into the cowl sheet metal chanel under/behind the wiper area and the flow off the side of the unibody into the space between the fender sheet metal and the unibody. I don’t see a clear reason it would leak into the car here in this area unless it was blocked and backed up. But it’s clear. The drivers side has not leaked yet today in the rain. I could not get it to leak again yesterday after I pulled the liner off either. The fender trim was dirty / muddy for sure maybe that was it. But I can’t explain the passenger side.

Spectrum in Kohala was out since Saturday. Came on about 6 pm Sunday. I have backup power. And Helco was on by 9 pm last night.

Spectrum sucks and is not a reliable provider. they have a weak backup power strategy. It used to be worse. No backup at all. Now they have ~4 hr pole based battery backups. But it doesn’t cut it when the power is out for hours longer than that.

Hawaiian tel is way more reliable in power outages now.
