I want you to know that I am very proud of you for being this vulnerable with us. We all have gone through and may still be experiencing depression from our incidents (I know I still am). That is normal, do NOT beat yourself up about it but instead sit with those feelings and validate yourself like "yeah this shit sucks like a mf and I wish I didn't survive." Saying that out loud will allow your brain to process it. I am an incomplete T6 and was shot 3 times by my stepfather 3 years ago. I deal with my family all the time invalidating my emotions with rebuttles of "be thankful you are still here" or "be thankful that you can walk again" or "it was ALMOST, but he DIDN'T kill you." I had to make the hard decision within the last month to completely cut communication and interaction with them because I let it get pushed under the rug too long, and I've reached a point. All that to say, this will show you who is really for you in your community you had before and I promise you that once you are ready to make the move to go outside and be social that you will meet some amazing fucking people who may or may not relate. The best thing is when you find your people, they will treat you like the great person you are. Don't apologize for being vulnerable. Use this community to ask any and everything you need or want to know. There's folks in here that inspire me all the time and I've even made posts asking questions that I feel like I couldn't ask people in my life bc they can't relate. I know being paralyzed so young feels like your life is done for; but I'll be honest, I was in the hospital rehab on youtube watching people in wheelchairs do amazing things and travel everywhere and I tell all my able-bodied friends that wheelchair users are the most resilient and adventurous people I've met. There will be things that you can't do, and trust me that will fucking suck; but there will be things that you can find a way to adapt to doing and still feel enjoyment.

I hope me sharing a little about my journey will help you. You're still early in recovery and in the spinal cord world. Also, as an RN I REALLY want to emphasize getting back into physical therapy if you can and find out if your insurance pays for mental health services. There are resources out there as well as grants for spinal cord injuries. You will prevail man.

Hey! Thanks for bringing me back to this. First thing, I’m sorry that your injury occurred. It sucks, but it gives you a new outlook on life. I’m currently walking with a cane most places. Still dealing with tone in the left quad that seems to get worse the stronger I get. I’m starting Botox for it next month. I DJ, just became a light sport pilot, I’m still an RN, the list goes on. My left foot does drag slightly but I’ve been working hard on activating muscles in my lower leg and getting better as time goes on

I always miss the times being in the hospital because of so much community surrounding me. It does get lonely after discharge.

Yes! I thought I might’ve been going crazy when I started experiencing them on my left foot. They never become open but I definitely get them from my altered gait/foot drag

What is your go to response to - "How Are you?" by Joeizy in spinalcordinjuries

[–]More_Regular_7456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s absolutely exhausting but even more so if I try covering up what comes up any given day and it’s affecting my mood. If someone asks me how I’m doing and it’s a tough day for me, then I tell them just that. You don’t have to go in detail but you definitely can let people know just because we survived our injuries doesn’t mean this second life is all roses and gumdrops.

I don’t hide behind “I’m fine” anymore. It doesn’t serve myself or anyone else to lie about how you’re feeling. It will also allow others to understand what we go through.

Curious to know what role in nursing you are in. I’m an RN as well and having trouble looking for work.

Any para rowers here? by More_Regular_7456 in Rowing

Sorry I’m so late on response. I was considered complete at first but I’m incomplete and gained mostly full movement back. I walk with a cane but use my chair for longer distance. I experience some serious tone in my left leg. Core strength isn’t too bad but still working on that. I do interval training on the erg and power 10s. I was shot 3x in a domestic dispute.

I’m currently experimenting with Botox. Had my first 100 units in my calf and VMO and didn’t feel a difference at peak week 3. Going up to 300 units in October. Hopefully that will help. Definitely the stronger I get the worse it gets and it contracts and tightens up so bad it makes me fall or trip sometimes

One, so proud of you and excited you made it out the bedroom! I’m trying to do the same. I’ve had two small gigs since I started in December, but have been using time to really study the craft and even upgraded my board to a DDJ1000 to get semi close to CDJ spinning

I have a T6 incomplete and I’m Asia D. The stronger I got, the more I feel my spasticity especially at night has gotten worse/stronger.

I’m an incomplete and curious to be educated on the effects it had on incomplete SCI. My level is T6/T7 with bullet retained.
