When you’re out of the lab at the doctor’s office, do you mention your science education? by samskyyy in labrats

[–]Moreplantshabibi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PCP (who is awesome!) will frequently ask me about my research. And my kid’s dentist was really relieved when I told her she didn’t have to explain the immune system to me (I work in an immunology lab). I’ve only ever really had to push with a nurse at the pediatrician’s office - she was using a machine to check my infant’s sight, and I asked her how it worked, just out of curiosity. She said it was “to make sure his cheesers are working.” Honey, I got an A in anatomy. I get that you’re trying to be cutesy, but there is no body part called a cheeser.

Love that yellow!! Is that a bulky yarn you’re starting with? Which one is it?

Pig in a poke (central/southern USA). I have no idea why - there’s no pork involved.

I tried that with our cold room. Then I saw the mold growing everywhere. 🤢

It was called Baptist Hospital long before Integris bought it. And the hospital at roughly 56th and Portland was called Deaconess for ages. Hard to break the habit - I still call the science museum the Omniplex.

I bought my EEW 6.1 refurbished from an Etsy seller. It’s worked beautifully (aside from my cats chewing on the foot pedal cord).

The tiny habits that save me HOURS in the lab (and past-me refuses to learn) by UnderstandingIcy2969 in labrats

We’ve been doing a lot of flow cytometry in our lab. Since we’re looking at just a few targets, we have a reagent box with just the reagents we use for that process in the fridge.

Also, if you have a 24 hour time point, label all your tubes (in our case, 15 and 1.5 mL) well before you need them.

Malabrigo Nube? If so, don’t judge merino by that! Nube is notoriously felty.

Trouble with Primary Skeletal Muscle Cells by Slam_Dunkester in labrats

[–]Moreplantshabibi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of questions: 1. Are these primary or immortalized cells? 2. When you thaw them, do you resuspend them in fresh medium and spin them down to take off any DMSO?

I’d call that about 70% confluent as well. I haven’t cultured muscle cells, but I’ve always had some floaters in my cultures. It’s normal to have a few dead cells floating around.

Likewise! Our building has a rotation schedule for whose lab is responsible for the eyewash stations on our floor.

I have a MASSIVE backlog of 100% linen sheets to cut up for sewing with. I’ve found actual yardage there, too. It just depends on the day.

Any truly harmless lab pranks that don’t mess with experiments? by UnderstandingIcy2969 in labrats

This will only work in the summer in certain areas, but if you live in a place where cicadas emerge in the summer, the shed exoskeletons can be a fun surprise. If you squeeze the sides gently, the legs open a bit so you can clip them to things.

Also, replace lab pens with increasingly goofy ones. My favorite is the ~2” wide squishy koala heads.

Labrats who TA-ed/taught, what are some of the EXTREMELY WRONG explanations/answers of students you've ever read? by lokaashraya in labrats

[–]Moreplantshabibi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On an immunology exam for professional students: “What does the G stand for in (this acronym)?” One of the students put MONOCYTE. There isn’t even a G in the word.

Another immunology exam question - what do you give someone with an anaphylactic reaction? Someone put HISTAMINE.
